Personally, I don't have a problem with clones as long as the brand name is not faked. I've looked at San Martins best Rolex clone and I've noticed that they have a sword hands version. That is the one I will go for. It's that one step back from being a copy that makes it OK for me.

I've just bought my 1st San Martin watch, and have zero regrets. You get so much more for your money than any sub £500 watch for around £300, cheaper in the sales. I went for a regulated NH35 movement, however you can pay a bit more for Swiss clone movements that supposedly ABIT more accurate. However I went for the cheaper one, great lume/bezel and bracelet. Deffo recommend pulling the trigger on one. Obviously do your homework and watch a few UA-cam vids etc.

San Martin have original watch designs too, I get those instead of the lookalikes. I just don't want to encourage the idea of fakery and if their best selling watch is a stolen design with a logo swap, I feel that incentivizes the wrong kind of activity with my money. Just my two cents

my answer would be quartz, but only if it's solar since you can struggle not to change battery at least 10 years of you take care properly

Both have failure modes. Mechanical can be serviced and put back in working order with a reasonable amount of thought and time put in. If the solar module in your solar watch goes out, you're basically done. No way you have the chemical / electric skills and materials at hand to put that back together

Wasn’t a fan Chinese watches but they have upped the game your getting L316 steel , sapphire crystal, screw down back or open back with Sapphire , screw down crown, 100 to 200 feet water resistance for less than $100 some cases and Japanese movement NH 35 usually or Swiss 2824 eta $200 wow and it looks good polishing or brushing ya in a fan now and there lume like Christmas lights lol like the San Martin watch’s great bargain

I recently bought a fake Patek. The Aquanaut 5167a. A friend of mine took me with him to a guy selling these fakes and I couldn't resist.
I know, fake watches are bad. But hear me out for a second:
1. Everyone knows it's fake. I'm a 38 year old middle class dad with a 2011 Suzuki as my ride. People know I don't pay 50k$ for a watch. And if a random guy asks me about the watch I immediately tell them "yeah it's a fake".
2. I will never buy a real Patek. So it's not as if I'm screwing Patek somehow.
3. The watch itself is magnificent. It is a beautiful, thin, mechanical watch that fits me perfectly. I really do feel like I own my grail watch. I can't stop looking at my wrist when I wear it. I an genuinely happy when I put it on.
4. The only thing I hate is the fact most 700$ watches out there do not come close to this Chinese fake.

Seems people here don’t u derstand the difference between fake/clone watch and homage watch.
When you buy a watch that have a brand name on it, but it’s underpriced, it’s most likely a fake/clone watch.
Skmei, Berny, San Martin etc are not fake watches. They look like brand name watches but they don’t tend to fool you it’s brand name watches. Those are homage watches.

With the exception of trademark infringement, wearing a fake watch is effectively identical to wearing an homage like San Martin or Invicta: you are intentionally wearing something that looks identical to a Rolex, likely for exactly the same reason: you either really like the look and want to wear it, or you want to look like you can afford a Rolex. Either way, there is no effective use case difference between a fake and an homage. Everything the Mad Watch Collector said about the person wearing the watch, all applies to homages (or more accurately, clomages like San Martin) as well.

I suppose you'll be surprised to learn then that Invicta watches were founded in 1837, and were swiss made. They went bankrupt in the 1980' and bought by Ondix who continued to make them until 1983, when they also went bankrupt. They are currently American owned and are a sister company to Glycine who watches currently are registered as swiss made. I understand what you were trying to say, however choosing Invicta as an example was a poor comparison choice, although you couldn't pay me enough money to wear one. History lesson over😂

Thanks for this q&a. I think question of replica is tricky and definition is grey. Fake is different I think. Fake is looks like real deal but also has the branding. All the rest is a range of designs that are homages which on one end is a near 'copied' almost 1 to 1 and on the other end of this spectrum is a watch "inspired by" a particular watch. I dont have issue with homages but generally avoid homages that are near 1 to 1 in design.

If you have a fake and I ask is it real A) is it any of my business B) if they tell me its real, have they done me some sort of injustice? No.... So if you want a fake buy it, doesn't matter others opinions, even if you did it to impress others. If its done to impress others then they too have a problem if they depend on things like that for a person's impression on them. Id buy a fake cause homages normally screw up the look of the original I love but could never afford. You dont like it, dont worry about it, cause I don't. Wrong, I have genuine Rolex, Omega, many microbrands, and bought a super clone GMT Rolex just because it has a Shanghai clone movement which is a work of art. I never use that watch outside of my house, I just admire how could a chinese factory replicate a Rolex with that level of quality, plus, it is a true GMT running +1s/day , for 500, it's a bargain. But I prefer microbrands and I wont be buying more reps

Not fooling anyone here, I have a mixture of originals and fakes. If I like the look but not the price, I will consider a decent fake with a seiko movement. I freely admit I can't afford a second hand, discontinued Nautilus but it's a great looking watch and a decent fake is £200. Another example is the Omega NTTD: Loved the look but wanted it on a leather strap. Absolutely no way I was going to spend 10k on a no-date watch and bin the strap, so a £200, Seiko loaded fake was the answer. It's even made of titanium. Aledgedly.😂 Tbh, for £200, I'm just glad it starts and keeps time each time I wear it.

A better option would be looking at other watches at those price points. At 10k, I would take a JLC Reverso or Cartier Tank/Santos. There are also Glashutte Original watches. Of course, Omega and Tudor options are there too.

It's not ilegal to buy, own or wear a fake watch. It IS ilegal to sell one for personal gain, on the pretence that it is genuine. This is fraud and could get you three years.
That aside, I see no problem with fakes. If you like the look of a certain design but can't aford it, have a look at a fake. Make sure it is good quality and aquire from a reputable dealer, just the same way you would with any other purchase.
If you do this successfully, you may start to wonder how Rolex etc, have the nerve to charge what they do.😂

i have a real omega seamaster 300 blue first thing people say to me is it a fake of course there all watch experts but if thats what they want to belive i can live with that ..id be the first person to get a fake from watchfinders then lol

The question should be.. Will mechanicals eventually die out with the rise of the smart watch?
I dont see my Grandchildren having any interest in them.
We are the transition generation that span digital and analogue.
Once we are gone mechanical watches will go with us.
No one wants to service their car, let alone a watch.
This generation moves in a 24 month cycle.

I wouldn't be so sure. I wore digital watches exclusively since the early red LED incarnations back in the 70's right through to G-shocks of the early 00's. But it is only now I am a man of a certain vintage that I have come to appreciate the beauty and craftmanship offered by a quality mechanical watch.
