The new Synergy DRECT preamp is here, but does it NAIL the classic Dual Rectifier sound?! I feel like we've been waiting on an alternative for that sound since the 90's, and nobody has been able to capture the massive low end, roaring gain, and overall tubbiness of the Dual Rec. When Synergy told me they were developing a Rec module, I was excited but skeptical. Let's see how it stacks up on this new episode of Meet the Machines with your good buddy Uncle Ben Eller!!!
Mainly playing my various Schecter Keith Merrow models into the DRECT module + the Synergy 50/50 power amp into the UA OX. I'll be whipping out a couple different boost pedals plus my darling new/old Ibanez Universe UV777BK with it.
That moment of absolute Meshuggah worship was mixed and mastered by @erockomania ! Hit him up for ALL your audio needs!

Yeah btw I assumed this was a DEI cover. The sounds are what I wish Meshuggah was doing these days.
Tone X ONE rules them all . . . sorry.
That intro had meshuggin’ in my boots.
Uncle Ben def. hast the "beets"
Save some riffs for the rest of us, Uncle Ben.
That dual rec sounds pretty fucking good uncle Ben, especially when played in "real Dad" mode.
Just ordered my Synergy Drect, now it's the waiting game from here out ! 😂😂😂
That intro jam is Gozer approved!
Eyyyy you get it!!
damn. that is the Destroy Erase Improve tone. well done
That SD1 makes them both sound so pissed. I love it
SD1 has gotta be the best boost ever. EVERY amp likes it.
Good LORD this tone
That first six string riff sounds so much like Be Quiet and Drive, with a little twist. So good
"Be Everlong Quiet And Drive."
@@adnap I was thinking that also sounds like another riff too and you caught it.
sounds so gnarly great playing unclen ben
The D-Rect tone definitely got me E-Rect 😏
E-rect and d-rect when its over.
The amp sounds great, and man, that Precision Drive! Wow 👌
Juicy tones, especially that stuff at 4:14 to 5:34. That sad angsty stuff still holds up.
Mesmerizing tones.
Fantastic playing Uncle Ben! 🤘
Easily the best DRECT demo and review so far. That Ibanez Universe is stunning!
Ben that tone rules the planet!!!🤘🎸
Thanks Uncle Ben, cool amp! and Cool Riffing! Much Luv🤩
Probably the wrong channel to say this, but what I want most from Synergy are three more low-gain modules:
* Steve Fryette's Sound City module
* a brownface Fender module
* a proper Vox module (The Morgan AC is not it.)
Dude, the Foo's tone was absolutely clinical. Bravo 👏👏👏👏
Awesome Video Ben!
Glad you enjoyed it
Really cool to see they included the orange channel. It's my favorite part of a REV G. It doesn't work everywhere, but it's just so damn fun to play
5:20 gorgeous stuff. love the clarity on those picked chords
Nice tone!
The people who think "having to" boost an amp is somehow a sign of a bad amp don't understand what a boost is doing. It's the same as saying high-output pickups shouldn't exist because your rig should sound amazing for modern metal using vintage pickups.
Man, that thing is killer. I was actually getting some Coretastrophe vibes from the video. If Synergy would do a XXXII (JSX) module, I'd ditch my JSX and move to Synergy immediately because I really like what they got cookin'. I just can't justify leaving my dream amp yet.
Damn, that thing sounds really good. But can't lie, the real chrome-panel Rev G just crushes it.
You went from meshuggah to Korn at one point and I am all for it😊 that Ibanez sounds soo good
I think the real value of an overdrive pedal in front of an amp is to tighten up the flabbiness of the bass. Especially if you are using a 7 string.
That intro riff was written during the rectification of the Vuldronaii, obviously.
This thing sounds so good !!!
Thanks Uncle Ben !
Nice one, Ben. Nothing like the SD-1 in front to tame the Luciderian ways of the Two rectal tones🎉
Ben those tones you coaxed out of the Drect where so heavy all the sound in the room fell to the floor. Had to lay on the rug to watch the video.
Very beefy, fire in the hole🔥🤘🏼
Seems like every UA-cam guitar player got one of these to review in the last week, it is in all my recommended videos. pretty smart on the Synergy marketing team
If the amp sounds half as massive as Eric Hill's recording, you've got a keeper.
I didn’t have to do much!
Damn man, this sounds really, really good. I might have to get one!
I haven't checked Synergy out, so I don't know what amp types they've already done, but just in case, I'd love to see them add Orange style amp types to their line. Please pass that along Uncle Ben
On the SYN2, the "FX SEND" sounds better then any of the other outputs.
Love that intro. Sounded amazing.
Glad you like it!
Marshall JCM! Uncle Ben I have no clue what a preamp is opposed to a post amp or what putting a boost before the amp is as opposed to after. I do know that duel rectifiers are wildly expensive. So I want a DRECT
Sweet, I was waiting for you to show off that UV777 gorgeous piece of gear! Tones are just what I expected from a Rec Rev alternative, Not bad at all, mine got home today so I'll check it later in the evening. Did I miss what Cab/IR/DynIR were you using for the demo, I wonder how it would pair with something like a TwoNotes Recto cab variation, hopefully you have time to check my question! keep shredding Ben!
Awesome demo! Digging every boost, hard to find something that doesn't work!
That's it! That's what it is...options paralysis. I also like the set it and forget it.
I get older and older and I become softer to the sounds of rock. The dual recto sound was originally just a different Plexi. It wasn’t clean or compressed. I love the brickwall metal sound but I really like those loose as a goose rock sounds. I can’t imagine a dual recto that sounded tight. Love this video. I won’t buy one. Stuck with a helix LOL
Great demo and seem like a very good Recto preamp. Sounds great from here. Next Synergy module could be something more mid gain like a Matchless or Orange or maybe a Trainwreck express type preamp for example. That would be quite cool. There are already a plethora of great high gain modules to be honest (and I own already too many ;-)
10:44 Actually the early revisions (particularly the C) are known for being significantly tighter and brighter than the revision G that you have.
Honestly, whether it’s with the Synergy or the original amp you can’t deny that the Dual Rectifier is an absolute beast of an amp and it’s fucking awesome… Also, I’m not too familiar with Synergy so I don’t know what else they have but anything inspired by a Hiwatt DR103 (the David Gilmour amp) or a Vox AC30 would be awesome
Nice Ben - tell them to hurry up and release that ZWreck !!!
The Drect seems to be a little more forward in the mix with that deep flubby low end, whereas the Rev G Mesa Amp adds a really nice bit of upper mid presence.
But it's obvious these two are close relatives.
Those were great sounds indeed! What is your entire signal path? I’m having trouble understanding that with all the pedals and such. Is this something you could use live and how would you accomplish that?
Thanks man!
For the OG Djentlemen out there, I believe Syneegy makes a 5150 style module as well.
It’s a Peavey-designed 6505! Super legit!
Was hoping for a demo with an 8-string. 🤔
The Key master, always be tryna hit that gatekeeper!
Ben you always have such killer sound, I was wondering do you ever use any amp sims at all ? and maybe you can do a video on those , love your channel. cheers. Ed Vancouver, Canada.
Damn, that thing single handedly makes me want to get into synergy and grab that pre-amp. I think if I was going to throw some other ideas out there for pre-amps, I think it would be cool to see some of the old school 80s rackmount pre-amps in synergy. Particularly the Bogner Fish and the Naylor Superdrive pre-amp, but any of that old school stuff that's hard to get your hands on.
It's good to see someone that really knows about Dual Rec ! Also, those Schecter sounds amazing, even the import ones and I know that you have an amazing guitar collection, so you woundn't use the KM ( import ) if those were piece of garbage !
Damn! You channeled you inner Fredrik Thordendal in that intro. Great job
OK - me again, but one minute older. Now I see :D
Well, dear Uncle Ben, this is defintely scratching an itch for me or in other words: YESSS !
Sounds good...but, also, did Ugritone do the same with their plugin? 🤔
Pass along to them that they need a Peavey Bandit 112 TransTube with Sheffield speaker emulation...an accurate plugin would be really nice, too. 🤘🏻🔥🤘🏻
Paired with a Crate GFX or Line 6 Insane module, we would be unstoppable.
@@BenEller Not sure what all that means, but just tell 'em, wouldja? 🤘🏻🔥🤘🏻
Love the opening tune. Has a very Steve-Howe-meets-Metallica vibe.
At 7:00 I thought you were playing Adalina from Killer Dwarfs.
Metal rules!
Hi uncle Bene! Question: what are your #1 ,,go to guitar strings n guage n why?? Thanks n love your ch! Mid Michigan ✌🏽.
Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor
YES!!!
Thordendal-errific!
They need to release a Soldano Deluxe module.
Synergy sounded sick, but Rectifier sounds slightly sicker!
Thanks a lot for this Eargasm hat those heavy "beets" (wink wink) Uncle Ben..! I'm def. going to give it a try; Sounds monstrous!
Then, during the third reconciliation of the last of the McKetrick supplicants, they chose a new form for him: that of a giant Slor! Many Shuvs and Zuuls knew what it was to be roasted in the depths of the Slor that day, I can tell you!
Hahahaha YES!!!
The Synergy sounds good, but once you go to the Rev G - it’s like “nah, there it is”
Have you checked out the Steve Fryette-designed IICP module?
Uncle Ben, please let Synergy know, I would like a Suhr SL68 module, a 3rd Power kitchen sink module, a Matamp module, a Two Rock module, a Mezzabarba module, a RedSeven module, a Hiwatt module, a Headfirst/ Monomyth module, and a Splawn module. Thanks!
Does Synergy have any Orange style modules in their line? That'd be neat.
That would be cool!!!! They’ve got some other British style amps like the 800 and Plexi.
id like to hear it through an old kustom amp. my cousin gave me his old kustom bass amp im playing my gothic morte les paul through and its great.
I hear a Swedish man yelling nonsense over the intro song for some reason
In the head to head I think that the The Drect vs Rectifier seems to be close but has D more of a “fuzz” push on the bottom and is less tight/crunchy/clean saturation on the bottom than the rectifier. BUT! When you used the super OD then the Horizon PD with the Drect. It sounded great! In turn The Rec sounds like the bottom dropped out with the Precision drive on it. I Def agree with your point that it’s a canvas to add your own boost or distortion to make it your own. I’ve been of that mindset with all of my amps, multiple boost pedal flavors, full distortion of fuzz make using tube amps more like a very tasty platform to jump off of. Super Kraken is a solid amp, could be a nice add to Synergy. Thanks Ben great stuff as always, great playing, tone, presentation and good learnin’ 🤘🏼
Thanks a lot dude! Yeah man they both sound great. Very stoked for the DRECT!
@@BenEller the inner gear addict in me “feels the force” pulling me toward a Drct 😅
So is that the Synergy SYN2 Rackmount Preamp Module Dual Module Dock that you have it jacked into? Also, what's that case that it's sitting in?
That’s right, plus the synergy power amp. That’s a Gator case, nice and light! But sturdy !
Goodness
more uv777 please. wish i could get my hands on one of those.
I definitely Meshuggah'ed all over myself after that intro jam Uncle Ben.
Can you go out from a d-rect straight into a DAW?
GAS
Rather than claim that amps should not require boost pedals, I say that guitars should not need pedals to cut bass; I give all my guitars bass knobs, so long as they support at least two knobs (concentric volume/treble, bass). G&L's spec uses a 250kΩ volume pot to approximate the load from modern wiring with 500kΩ volume and tone, whereas the Reverend spec uses a 500kΩ volume pot to approximate the load from vintage wiring with 500kΩ volume and tone (It also uses a different cap for the bass and a different treble-bleed cap for the volume.).
It sounds perfect...do you still need amp watts to drive it?
There’s a LOT of different ways to use Synergy stuff. I recorded all this with their power amp for wattage.
Missed opportunity. They should have called it: RCTUM
Synergy is awesome for people who don't want to spend all that money on amp heads but want higher quality than the modelers
woohoo i love you uncle ben, youre my favorite uncle
Castlevania is the best game ever💯🤘🏻
Is that a rectification of the Vuldronale joke?
My man
Not real familiar with the Synergy system, but could you use this without the syn-1 or 2?
@@aaronsinger Thanks dude…that’s what I expected.
Fugg yess
The dual rectifier is like a big juicy steak. The petals are the seasoning.
I wonder how this would sound through my be 100 fx loop?
my god, lethal.
What is the riff at around 7.40? Whatever it is I need it!
Just something I was noodling on!
@@BenEller you can sell that!
How many KM signatures do you have?
USA Pro, Hybrid, and the 7 string Legacy!!! Amazing guitars.
You'll pry my old-school Mark II-B from my cold, dead, and very deaf hands. 😂
