I’m glad you enjoyed Survive the Night!! I thought I was the only one. It’s not my favorite, but I still loved it! I’m also a huge Riley Sager fan. I was worried it would end in “it was all a dream” like you said haha. The first 30% of the book is eerily similar to something that happened to me in college so it was really suspenseful for me.

Honestly I have no idea how I didn’t guess, but I gasped out loud because I was so shocked😂

wow you're so welcome I got you into that event. you better love me so much. ;) ALSO I agree with your assessment of him sort of poking fun at Charlie and her trusting nature. I think he was also somewhat exploring how we assume trust in others. Charlie meets the guy giving her a ride at her college, at the campus ride board (in a student building) and he looks like a student! So initially she feels like she has no reason not to trust him, and when she first gets into the car, the initial things she notices that maybe feel "off" are so basic, like him being five minutes late or wearing the same sweatshirt, that it's easy for her to talk herself out of it. Also while the unreliable narrative trope is maybe getting a little tired, I appreciate Sager using a more creative way to do it rather than through substance (someone being drugged or using alcohol/drugs) or suffering from an injury that skewed with judgment!

Yessss I love you okay 🙄🙄 haha and I totally agree with the fact that he's doing something different with an unreliable narrator. I'm tired of the same old tropes and Charlie was a much more unique approach to that trope!!

great reading vlog !! I thought the the twist/framing device of Survive The Night did the job of making fun of horror/thriller media tropes in a really smart way ! and it was really satisfying after chapters upon chapters of getting annoyed at the main character for making poor decisions lol

Agreed!! The ending def. justified A LOT of what we saw, which made it so much more logical and realistic to me!

The unreliable narrator thing isn’t my favorite. But I loved the “twist” with Survive the Night.

I just think Riley Sager is just a man who hasn't had to deal with worrying about if he was going to be murdered or attacked, so he writes women from that perspective. I refuse to believe he's writing women so dumb because he's trying to be campy or B-Movie girl.

I think that's a valid opinion, but I do disagree. A huge portion of the premise is its relationship to film. This being a thriller/horror, I expect it to follow certain tropes and characters of that genre (especially 90s/80s era), and so I think that was his intention. whether or not he intended it that way, we won't really know for sure. We have to also take into consideration the nature of Charlie's psychology and how that could potentially mess up her awareness to things and her ability to be cautious at times.
