It's always tough when your region doesn't get the best version of a game, and such is the fate of Tales of Phantasia aka MVP Claus chaperones a group of impulsive teenagers. Mechanically, this is a very smartly designed game with a lot of systems all serving a purpose and balancing very well with each other, and the balance of puzzles and combat in the many dungeons and quests is smartly done too. It's uncommon to find an RPG that is so efficient and doesn't bog the player down with nearly Any filler content or useless economies or pointless inconveniences. The controls in the GBA version are not great, and Tales never has a Quest tracker, but I know the speed and fluidity of the combat gets better with later ports. Try not to think too hard on how they handle Time travel and you'll be fine. In Dig NA Shun. Next RECAPitation will be: Wild Arms
I remember seeing that part when I was playing the game on a SNES emulator on my Wii years ago. Caught me completely off guard and I laughed so hard. Then I played the GBA version and was highly disappointed seeing how heavily censored it was. They even switched booze for food in that one scene on the ship.
Tales of Phantasia got me started on the series and made me hooked despite the ugly and confusing translation of the GBA version of the game, it still held true to what my ideal JRPG should be like: a compelling and emotional story with a great set of characters.
I can't believe my prayers have been answered. He did another Tales RECAPitation!!!!!! Now, if you excuse me, I'm off to start my mission again till we get the next one.
Man, this is a game I hadn't played in years. Symphonia is my all-time favorite Tales game and seeing the connections to Phantasia once more is certainly nice.
Playing this game all those years ago was very fulfilling. I was quite content when we defeated Dhaos in the present with our OP stats and equipment and was ready for the credits when suddenly they give us a future arc instead! That's like a New Game+ for young me.
Dude, I absolutely love what you do on your channel. I know you probably get a ton of praise, but im telling you, as a game designer myself. These help me sooo much with reminding and fullfiling me with the lore and game mechanical systems they use to remind me. Thank you for your time, passion, and everything. This is one of the first fan translated Roms I ever played back in 2001 or 2, along with FF5 and Bahamut Lagoon. Also the game that introduced me to Motoi Sakuraba's incredible work. Perfect title for a Recap, thanks Oni!
I feel like so many of these JRPGs have an old city that turns out to have future technology outta nowhere. And every time it catches me off guard lmaoo.
Funny story, I accidentally downloaded the Japanese rom of this game and still managed to beat it with out knowing anything. That was my introduction to the tales series.
like a tiger is such a classic line for oldy tales of fans lmao! also iirc the dejap translation also implies that Arche is not a virgin anymore when they went to meet the pegasus lmao
about 3 weeks ago now I finished berseria, it was my first tales experience...I'm thinking of going for this one next, never really played a retro JRPG before so hopefully it will be fun!
Tales of Phantasia alongside FF6 are the two best JRPG games I have ever played. This game will always have a special place in my heart. Thanks for the trip to nostalgia lane. 😊
Wow, funny how I just finished replaying this game recently. I am so happy that this video is here, I love the Tales series and this game. One of my favorite Tales games next to Symphonia and Abyss. I've been playing the Tales series for almost 7 years now and glad that one of my favorite video games is getting a little bit of love. Great video, keep it up Oni!
30:30 I just love casually Rondoline is brought up and promptly discarded as a fact. Not even a mention that she's friends with Dhaos. What's worse is that the moat attention she's ever gotten.
Wow. I think this is perhaps the most divided game you've covered thus far on your channel in terms of its development and porting cycles. I'm glad you established that context prior to the RECAP since I've never even touched this game in any sense. I love that my understanding of Tales of Symphonia enhances my experience of this game's RECAPitation. Martel, Dwarves, Mana, Elves, even specific locations like Heimdall, and so forth - it seems they established the baseline of this game's universe quite well with this installment. But has time travel ever been used in any other Tales game since? I'm honestly not sure. It kind of came out of nowhere, but ultimately, I'm okay with it. Like you say, don't think about it too hard. I like that the consumption of mana is established here. In Tales of Symphonia, it is established that wars consume vast amounts of mana. In this game, we literally see that be the case as the story continues, particularly with the spike of usage due to the Mana Cannon. With all the research on attractive bodies and magitech, this game probably supports the cause of science more than any other game out there. :D Jokes aside, this looks like an incredible game, but I am glad future installments did away with all the time travel that was going on. The conflict was good enough with the elements of war, mana consumption, racial tension, magitech, and creating Pacts with Summon Spirits. Also, ROLE CALL YAY! Sorry, had to get that out. Thank you for your RECAPitation as always and I'll meet you on the next battlefield. Favorite alliteration in this video: Deadly demons they doubt they can defeat. Edit: WOW! The Patreon list has gotten big! Well done.
Oh boy does this bring back memories! I first played it on an emulator in like '01 (I think), and it was my introduction to fan translations - the TL I played was only half finished and so I was only able to finish like half of the game as well. Those were the days
Can you please finish this and make a recaption of the rest of the Mothership Titles • Tales of Phantasia • Tales of Destiny • Tales of Destiny 2 • Tales of Eternia • Tales of Symphonia • Tales of Rebirth • Tales of Legendia • Tales of the Abyss • Tales of Innocence R • Tales of Vesperia • Tales of Hearts R • Tales of Graces ƒ • Tales of Xillia • Tales of Xillia 2 • Tales of Berseria • Tales of Zestiria • Tales of Arise
Man fan the story about drama behind the scenes. Anyways tales of phantasia is one of my favorite jrpg series i played the fan translation of the psx version and i enjoyed it.
A suggestion: Stick with a series and make a Playlist of those consecutive releases. "Tales of" as a series has so many games, and many of those are so damn good. Destiny is one of my favorite PS1 games. Damn shame its never been remastered or even re-released. Glad I still have my original PS1 copy. Destiny 2 (NOT Eternia) was a damn fine follow up that suffered from Namco's shortsighted mindset that resulted in it not being officially released to the US. Abyss is a downright classic. I loved it on PS2, then loved it again on 3DS. Vesperia is hands down one of the best games of that console generation. Period.
Destiny 1 was remade and released in Japan on PS2 and was probably re-released digitally on the Japanese PS Store but I can't confirm that last part 100% yeah, I agree it sucked it didn't get re-released in the West by any means, but given the franchise's recent Western track record, there's hope for that in the future
@Shaman Xeed not dissing Eternia cause it's a great game, just dissing Mattel's stupid trademarking of the word 'Eternia' for their He-Man franchise as the reason why we ended with the former localized as Destiny II and no actual localization of Destiny 2 years later
played snes version at teenage. never forgot the ending, i was shocked. 34yo, still moves my feelings a little bit when I think of it. good lesson for life.
I remember playing the fan translation when I was younger. I know I never finished it, I definitely got as far as Thor and found the Gremlin summon, but I don't remember most of the rest of the future stuff... I wonder how far from completion I actually was
Same here, I had a blast playing sometime in 2000 to 2005 but never got too far in the future. It makes me want to play it again and finish it for once, the experience is really unlike its ports.
they wasted the opportunity to make a big revelation: imagine if dahos was trying to save THEIR world, not an alien world. "if mana is used, all life in the world will die". that would make dahos the good guy fighting kingdoms to save the planet and the party would be "bad guys", forced to realize it in a "what have we done????" moment.
You know I want a full remaster edition for Phantasia. I want PS5 or Xbox or whatever future console to bring this first installment that started the franchise to receive the proper acknowledgment it rightfully deserves. PLUS CAN YOU IMAGINE HOW BEAUTIFUL AND GREAT THE BATTLES WOULD BE IN FULLY RENDERED 3D IN 4K???
JRPGs, FF7 included, love using names taken from Norse mythology, among other mythologies and religions, although spelling varies from game to game. The Midgar Zolom in FF7 for example is meant to be Midgardsormr.
I wouldn't call him a "good guy". Yeah, he had good intentions, yet he still slaughtered a lot of people and brought a shit ton of misery. That's not what a good guy does.
I bought this new about a month after it released. However 10 minutes after purchasing it I found a copy of Tales of Destiny in the wild so i returned it to walmart and ended up getting Phantasia again couple of months later 😂
Second game of the franchise i played after tales of Symphonia and one of the few games that i had played more than once and that still holds even today, but yeah as long as you dont give much logic to the time travel plot holes the story is quite enjoyable. Sadly the GBA version has the censored dialogues.
this was something playing back in like 98 or maybe it was around 2000, either way crazy how immersive and what gems of games these were back then, felt so wholesome and like nobody else knew about them or had this experience, definitely not many people like today and with not a big social media presence it also made playing game more immersive challenging and all, because u didn't have stuff u could really look up or got spoiled on with constant videos and trailers, ud go to like a book and music exchange store and find games like this randomly and just try them, those were the days for sure and def what made me fall in love with jrpgs and other grand genres than be some fortnite casual like kids today smh
ToP X style with the amazing sprites (in battle anyway) no spell pause and the new character (unless she sits out the final battle like she did, then she has no point or purpose)

I enjoyed it a ton esp coming off from symphonia.
Though the trauma of fighting golems will never leave me.
You are my hero
Another awesome video and I am eager to see your wild arms video. Are you going with classic Wild Arms or go with Wild Arms F or a mixture of both?
I had no clue that's how Tri-Ace got its start but now I can see the similarities to themes and writing style in the Star Ocean franchise.
*Whistles in Figaia*
Show’s GBA version the entire time...
::sneaks in SNES fan translation to show ‘F’s like a tiger’ line::
was so confused. I DID NOT remember that playign this as a kid lol
Omg you included the "like a tiger" line
Lol. I was surprised when I read that.
Was that part of the ps1 version or something or a fan translation?
@@ZeroFinalStrike the one I played was a fan translation ROM.
Lol he totally did it on purpose, he uses the PS version for all scenes, except switched to the SNES fan translation for that part

Tales of Phantasia was such a good game. Good gameplay, good characters, good story. I liked it way more than I thought I would when I started it.
Love these games. Makes me wish and hope that Bamco will remaster their older titles, or at least port them to modern systems
I can't believe my prayers have been answered. He did another Tales RECAPitation!!!!!!
Now, if you excuse me, I'm off to start my mission again till we get the next one.
Man, this is a game I hadn't played in years. Symphonia is my all-time favorite Tales game and seeing the connections to Phantasia once more is certainly nice.
they need to either remake the game or make a anime. I know it has a OVA, but that's 4 episodes and haphazardly tells the story.
I wish they'd remake this game. Would love to see first hand how intertwines with Tales of Symphonia.
Symphonia is the prequel to this
@@SonictheNinja Right that's what I mean.
Every mention of Kangaroo was actually Ragnarok mixed up and badly translated XD
One of the best RPG ever made. I just finished the SNES version while quarantined
I’m so glad you make this
Not many people play the first Tales of game

I'm crying, this brings back so many memories qwq
I played it as a kid, I couldn't beat it. Then I revisited it during my late teens and loved it.
Oh hey, it's one of my favorite JRPGs, and one of its characters was my UA-cam avatar for nearly ten years now!
I'm from 6 months in the future, and I feel betrayed!
@@themadpro Yeah, I changed it not long ago hahah
