Understand human visual perception to transform your photos [March 2020 Workshop]

  • I'm soon to be running this year's 2020 workshop experience in my studio with world-renowned animal photographer Tim Flach.
    In this video, I talk about what a picture is and how we perceive images.
    "How do humans perceive things?" It's one of the biggest questions most photographers don't ask themselves!
    There's a big difference between taking a good photograph and creating a photo that tells a story and evokes feelings...
    ... and it can take years for a photographer to piece together all of the elements of lighting, emotion, composition, juxtaposition and visual storytelling in their work.
    This photography workshop will fast track that learning process:

    "Evoke a feeling" that is how I approach my images and have done so for a long time, when I look at a picture I notice how does it make me feel. One of my jobs was printing old Black and White negatives of long forgotten formats. Ansell Adams the master of dodge and burn.

    THIS is the main ingredient of composition. Being a pro photographer for 30 years and teaching photography for 12 years, students always look at me as if I just farted when I explain this (your) theory and the importance of the visual perception. I include this vision into the big chapter of being conscious of who you are as an artist (thus being able to speak the visual language) and being aware of nearly every photo you take the moment you see the picture unfolding on the spot or in your mind. Light and colour being the main photographic element in the construction of your image. All the other composition theories, tutorials , ... only focus on the graphic side of composition and are very limited because they exclude the most important factor: the artist - photographer. I’m happy to share this video in my courses if I’m allowed to. 👌🏻😊

    I would attend, as a successfull photographer in my country (took me very quick 3 high pace learning years) I still know that even I have a very good money for my shootings, I am still in a learning stage. Unfortunately still making few bucks when you compare with salaries in England, France, Germany, atc.. But I will go with my work abroad soon, I know this - I am high, but I will climb much higher as I already know photography is a skill. And your videos inspire me. Very much - I am not wealthy enough to attend your workshop, even I am really sorry about this, but I still want to thank you and let you know that there are people you have a good and even some you have a great positive impact on. So as one of them, truly Thank you Karl.

    One thing I notice is that many landscape photographers seem to be unaware of _anchor_ points whereby your brain judges all other colours and tones in comparison to the _adjacent_ tone or colour. Photographers often frame their pictures with a clinical white border which can ruin the emotion of the image as the stark white is not a good anchor-point. The *colour* and *tone* of the mount *border* is crucial as an anchor to allow the brain to 'process' the photograph inside the rectangle it forms. Change the border, and you can significantly affect the apparent colour and contrast of the main image.

    • @ArcanePath360
      @ArcanePath360 2 роки тому

      I know what you mean. A picture's border can dramatically affect the picture. I've had nice pictures when viewed in a black border, AKA Windows slideshow, but when viewed with Photo viewer with a white background, it ruined it to the point where I re-edited in Photoshop to have an artificial extended black edge. It's all about juxtaposition.

    There's a lot of movies that have a similar plot to this workshop. Group of people with something in common all meet at an island. It sounds great, until people start disappearing one by one.

    I've run into this problem many times, where I swear there's a hue that I don't like in part of my image, and when I try to de-saturate it, it turns out it's already a neutral grey, so I have to ADD colour to make it perceptually grey.

    Evening Karl. I have been watching almost all of the videos that have been posted. My photography experience is in news photo. Shooting mainly in the street and looking for action. I step away for some time, but after finding your channel. I decided to get back into photography. News and tragedy, tell a story is fine . I need to elevate my work. To a different level. How can I learn how to bring out a person’s personality more.
    Also being this is 2021. Any more Conferences planned for this year or would there be anything planned for the first quarter of 20 22

    Oooo wouldn't I just love to attend that one. Especially since the first question people often ask when I show them my favorites is "What is it?". I'm not sure that would change after the workshop, given that the subjects that evoke that response are frozen bubbles. The very notion does give me some interesting ideas. Thank you.

    WOW, I've never taken a photo workshop, but this one looks really interesting. I would ~~LOVE~~ to go to this, but I simply can't get it put together in that March timeframe, just too stacked up in the Day Job with prior commitments. The last time I was able to take a whole week to go to a class was probably fifteen years ago. That and the cost. Sure the course fee sounds stiff, but it's Karl Taylor, I feel the course fee is probably actually a little cheap, but the opportunity cost of taking off a week and travel and what I spend when there, and I would have to take my wife and she would loose her mind shopping or doing tourist stuff, so the whole experience would probably cost me fifteen or twenty grand by the time it was over.
    I have tried to study a lot about human physiology and how it rules image perception, particularly with respect to color and how our eyes sense in RBG but our brains seem to perceive in L-a-b. I wonder if they will touch on that at all.

    I think it's worth every penny and had I not had to fork out three grand for a car, I would have jumped at the chance. Now, I wonder how many other YT channels are going to be doing videos on human perception lol.

    • @VisualEducationStudio
      @VisualEducationStudio  4 роки тому

      Thanks, I'm not sure that other channels will be trying to talk about this as there is a lot of study required to fully understand this stuff and both Tim and I have spent years on this. I'm only scratching the surface in this video as the most important content and practises are kept for the workshop.
