- My first rFactor film and entry into the rFactorCentral.com 2008 Video Competition!
It's been a learning experience from to go; I barely had enough time to complete it yet alone polish it to a standard I would have liked, I started shooting only 2 days before the deadline when I finally got the time off.
Work Times:
8-10 hours filming.
12-15 hours editing.
6 hours encoding - 3 versions.
5 hours uploading. (Thanks HD)
Definitely the fastest 48 hours of my life. I actually submitted the video before I completed it. It only cost me a weekend to make. :-)
So about the film, I'm brand new to the rFactor film scene but I've been gaining enthusiasm for rFactor for a few years. Bringing over my experience with BF2 machinima I'm used to having total control over where and how I use the camera. I appreciate in rFactor it's a little more difficult with the free cam; being inherently jerky, though I try to be as smooth as possible. Using track cameras for the whole film would have been unacceptable.
I designed for a natural progression through the film while trying to be unique via the undertaking of small micro-story elements throughout the scenes at a medium pace with upbeat music and exciting action, rather than just a montage of random clips bogged down on emotion. It features a cocktail of music segments courtesy of Immediate Music, Corner Stone Cues, Muse and Hybrid.
It wasn't perfect with the amount of footage I was rushing to capture but some moments worked as I hoped. I also planned to give each mod is own 'spotlight' time, which again was very difficult without drawing things out, a lot of the shots had to be cut when it was nearing the 10 minute mark.
The film focuses on the cars more than the tracks, and composed in a way that groups certain cars into visually logical groups or themes. Some are more serious than others, it's not my style to cut inside jokes from the final cut if I happen to capture them, so if you find a few small things humorous, chances are it was intentional. I hope it shows rFactor for what it is, full customization, any car on any track against any class, immersion and user made content, the greatest strength of rFactor against other racing sims.
Unfortunately I only have a car list to put here because I was too busy to look at what tracks I was using, but I did do my research up to the final days and took particular interest showcasing the lesser-known cars and tracks of the rFactor community as well as the most up-to-date releases. However, I didn't want to neglect those high-rated mods either like HistoricX, CTDP 2006 and VLM's tracks.

12 years ago i was ten and this video was very important to me. I've seen it a hundred times and it was my favorite part of the day when i returned from school. I watched it and then tried to drive in rFactor hoping that one day I'll be good at simracing. And today I remembered this, only few days after my first podium in czech league... I sincerely thank you for making this video...

This is an EXCELLENT montage you put together. Well-recorded, the editing is beautiful and the music wraps it all together in a very entertaining package. I especially love the go-karts. Can't wait to drive them!

i had just seen both the 1st place and this...Although the 1st place may have 'racing emotional factor' included, but it's this that made me totally mesmerised in for 7minutes. Simply Amazing! Really good job!! (& 48hours well spent)
Its really cool to see you've moved into the rfactor scene Xalias. I remember some of your great BF2 videos and shamefully (looking back) I uploaded one of them years ago to my account. Hope you decide to stick around the racing sim scene. Great video! ;)

Actually mate, this is quite original. And none of that overused slow and mellow stuff. I especially liked the sped up daytona 24h in the riley. It was a very nice touch plus the mistake coming out of the corner which kinda gave it an "exhaustion" look during the night. Great going, wishing you the best.

rFactor came out in 2005, and the engine it uses is a few years older. You can't expect much really, though if you know where to look for cars and tracks that use SRPL shaders, you'll be surprised how good the game can look.

@superferrariman I've recognized maybe 8 tracks. Schwaben circuit (0:00-1:12), Bathurst(1:33-1:45), maybe Pau or different city track(1:46-2:02),Vanport(2:04-3:15), Maybe one of ICA Kart or BRKart tracks(5:04-5:20), Laguna Seca(5:22-5:40), Le Mans(around 6:20-6:43) and Nordschleife (partially shown during Le Mans in background and then from 6:43-6:53

I know this game is a pretty hardcore sim, but is it worth trying to play this with a gamepad? I know I'll never have the kind of control I would with a good FF wheel, but I don't have the money for that. So, is it actually playable with a pad?

Is RFactor more or less realistic than LFS? Also is it more or less fun?
Or is GTR (original, or 2, or 3 if there is such a thing) better than all of these? I know iRacing is the most realistic, but what is the most realistic while still being customizable? For example I want to do various forms of the most realistic GT racing, but i want it to be as close to iRacing as possible.
