    You did exactly the application/operation I had in mind. Is it okay if we power the ESP 32 module from an external source? For example, with a mobile phone charger with a 5 volt output.
    Because it will be an expense to buy an adapter that reduces 12V to 5V.
    For this reason, I want to use the existing adapter I have.

    • @Hrupix

      Just like Hyper mentioned, it is for sure possible. You can power the esp device via the usb micro on the board. I believe you would still need the gnd pin connected to the gnd of the led strip to work but the voltage pin on the esp board would not need to be used at all. Hope that makes sense!

    Just wondering is there a reason a PC PSU as that has 12v and 5v rails in it isn't an option when building somethign like this (Im thinking about a redesign in my house and have loads of thse) Im guessing I could run any comination of LED type I wanted then with a mix of voltages to suit, all with electrical protections in place already - and enough juice to light hte street. Presumably no one does not for a technical reason just the cost. Your videos have really come on, since those first few videos. Clear and simple. I likes.

      Thanks so much buddy for the kind words! That's a really good question! I've never tried using a pc board but I dont see why it would not work and if it did, that would be very slick! Definitely worth experimenting with and seeing if/how it works! Let me know if you end up trying it because I would be curios how it turns out!

    • @djmandrick

      @@ChrisMaherDIY A PC PSU can be silent these days and pretty much comes standard and you get something like 30A on a cheap one to 50A on a decent one (but hte cost is a lot more obviuosl) on the 12V rail (although they are molex i'm sure you could chop the end off and wire it to whatever you want. Might make a good video idea. The 5V rail has the Sata connections, again just chop em off or amend hte female connection end to then wire onto the lights. Not sure how the datawires would work though haveing not don3e anything with the LEDs I bought 18 months ago! (project to come!) and usually you get multiple of each. Older PSUs favour the molex and 12v, as SSDs and smaller drives now run on 5v so usually you get more. It'd have all the necessary protection and all that as they have to to meet the EU standards. I reckon it'd be a doddle for you. One switch to turn on and it'd run the whole room. Add that onto a plug that can be controlled via you app to switch it on and off. Hey presto! :)

      Thanks so much for watching and great questions/observation. So when I was setting things up, i put the backup data line into the ground and tested things out and everything seemed to work fine so I just rolled with that. With that being said, I have no idea if that's the best way or the right way of doing it! Sounds like the backup data could/should maybe be plugged into the data line? Is that what you are thinking?

  • @TechTy

    Plz tell me what I'm missing here regarding your 12v 5a power supply.
    You used 2 full 5m strips which appeared to be 60 leds/m.
    LEDs are 0.3w each so 60 LEDs x 10m = 180W / 12V = 15amps
    General rule of thumb is to add 20% to the power supply so how are you running those lights (which should be using an 18amp power supply) on a 5a?

    • @ChrisMaherDIY
      @ChrisMaherDIY  Рік тому

      Thanks so much for watching! That's a great question! I don't have the technical knowledge of a lot of people out there yet but my understanding is that led strips recommend power based on max performance. I really have never had the need to run things at full brightness/full white and when running things at lets say 50%, its still very bright and hard to look at. Also, running animations and any other color than white will use far less than the max of what the lights are capable of. I could be way off on my assumptions but I have always been more of a lets plug things in and see what happens type of guy when it comes to playing around with LEDs.

    Hi.
    Me again.
    Glad you done this...
    Now then..
    For power did you connect second strip directly onto the end of first.
    So to say the whole lot powered from one end and second strip in series?
    Secondly. When I try to power my esp32 via the 5v and the pin next to it it does not power on.. No onchip led activity.
    So the o ly way is with the mini usb cable. Have to chop into wire to hot wire off black and red for strip power source. Then splice earth onto esp and strip so to have common earth .
    Be a lot easier if I could power esp from a voltage reduction board and use it to replace generic controller thats running 2811 leds
    How to stop flickering over full brightness.
    This is the esp32 that I have..

      Hey, I had the same problem (with the same ESP32) as you but with an WS2812 ECO and fixed it in the end. I dont remember how I fixed it, but this is how I wired it: You have 2 lose wire red&white, these connect directly to power supply. The other one with 3 wire: red, white & green are directly connected to ESP32. Red to 5V, White to GND (between G13 & G12) and Green to G4.
      When it do flickering, it means that the GND isn't connected correctly.

      But your a trooper for that info.
      Want to power it from a buck converter down to 5v? Also if using say a 12v power supply at let's say 8amp and I bucked it down to 5v would the amp change?

    • @Can_I_Have_A_Go
      @Can_I_Have_A_Go Рік тому

    • @davidwigforss5255
      @davidwigforss5255 Рік тому +1

      @@Can_I_Have_A_Go Yes, the amps will increase. You need to find what the efficiency is of the buck step converter. Power out = power in * efficiency.
      So output in your case would be: 12(volts) * 8(amps) * .93(efficiency) = 89.28 watts = 5(volts) * 17.856(amps)

      Thanks so much for watching! So I have done that but I don't think did a video. There are mixed opinions when it comes to powering the esp device with a micro usb but i've never had any problems. So what you can do is plug the micro usb into the esp32. then you would still need to attach a wire to the gnd pin and connect that to the gnd from the 12v power supply that is going to the led strip. That should be all you need to do if my memory is correct. Then the data from the esp would still go to the data on the led strip and there would be nothing attached to the vin pin on the esp32. Hope that helps!

      Thanks for watching and great question! So my understanding is that these along with most addressable lights need the data to be connected before they do anything. Led strips that are the basic ones that dont really have data going into it will fire up with power and nothing else but these (at least in my experience) need the data connected as well. Without the data, the lights don't know what to do when plugged in and just stay off. I hope that makes sense!

    Great video, Chris! I have a question regarding your 12V/5A = 60W power supply recommendation.
    According to the specifications, a 5M WS2815 LED Strip will take 90W to power (probably at full white with no degradation).
    If we consider 20% higher (90W *1.2), it will be 108W.
    Does this theoretically mean we should be using a minimum of a 120W power supply? That is twice as much as what you're recommending.
    Am I understanding this correctly?

    • @mattwilson9293
      @mattwilson9293 10 місяців тому

      I just installed exactly 5m of this WS2815 strip (144 LED/m) around my walk in shower. Yes, it's a rather big shower.
      Using WLED to limit power to 2.5amps, this is more than adequate for powering 5 meters. Remember, this is with me using 144led/m strips.
      Any higher than 4 amps and it becomes offensively bright on all colors, especially white.
      You dont NEED a 12v10a power supply, but it won't necessarily hurt anything as long as you don't let it try to pump 10amps all the time.

I have also never done as big of a project that your taking on so I don't have firsthand experience on what to use but trial and error is the best way to go! I'm also not aware of a driver that does not need to convert 2 ac but I can for sure see what that would be helpful! It very well may exist but i've just never looked into that either. • @ChrisMaherDIY
      @ChrisMaherDIY  Рік тому

      Thanks so much for watching and great question! Yes you can do that. The only thing I bring up is that when you sync them all together, you can control them all at once but that does not mean that all the 4 sections with the 4 different controllers led strips will act as 1 single long led strip. I doubt that is something you care about but just in case it was I'm not aware of being able to sync them like. As far as the presets you can assign different controllers to different sync groups so that when you change one device it only changes the others in the specific group if that makes sense. You should be able to then set presets for all of this for quick access!

    Quick question. Did you use power injection on the other end? Or is the full 10m run just one power source with unnoticable diminish to brightness? I was considering getting a nice big 12 v 15A 180W PSU for my project using 15m of ws2811 but now I am having second thoughts.... Additionally, I am curious to know of it is possible to connect the data wire (green)to 2 led strips and have the same data sent through them I was thinking 5m and 10m( with power injection ) since the big power supply has 3 pairs of +v -v I can use. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks!

      @ChrisMaherDIY  Рік тому

      Thanks so much for watching and great questions! I did not use power injection on this setup. Just had the power going in at the beging of the first led strip and that's all. If I remember correctly, at 100% brightness and white, I did notice a drop off in color but on every animation or just regular color, it looked great. I also think If I had the brightness set to about 70% and white, I did not notice any drop off in color at that point. And yes you can certainly run the data wire to 2 strips and have them do the same thing. This is called running them in parallels. You can simply split the data line coming from the controller (I love using wago connectors to split the data) and then run the data to whatever strips you have and it should work great!

      Thanks again buddy! In case you didn't see my reply on your comment on the other video: Thanks so much for watching and taking the time to comment! Sounds like an epic project! I have yet to do an install that large so I'm not 100% sure what would be best but here is what I would probably start out with and see how it looks. Depending on the setup of the room I would probably do 2 power supplies (hopefully keep the length of injection wires down a little bit) If you are wanting to have them running on white and full brightness, you would probably need a power injection every 5 meters. If you don't necessarily need them at full brightness and full white, you could probably do just fine with an injection every 10 meters. If you use sk6812 leds, they have a separate white channel and I think on those you could do a power injection at every 10m and be good
      You could probably get away with using just 1 esp32 device but here are some more of the recommended lengths from the WLED info page: kno.wled.ge/features/multi-strip/
      So much of what I do is not technical and just more trial and error. I generally will just test everything out on the floor with little to no power injection, see how it looks and then go from there until I'm happy with how it looks!

Might need to add power injection at some point on the strip depending on how things look when you plug them in and the esp devices with WLED do have a recommended number of max leds you should use. Is normal voltage from ESP32 output is enough for 12V strip? I found on WS2815 datasheet that there should be "VDD-0.5~VCC+0.5" on the input pin, so i'm not sure if normal 3V3 or 5V from ESP output will be enough...

      Thanks for watching and great question! Are you wondering if you can power 12v led strips directly from the esp device? You would not be able to do that. But in my experience, the data signal coming from the esp device is strong enough to go to the lights as long as the data line is not super long. If it is you might need a resistor on the data line to boost things.

    Hang on... how are you powering a 5 meter strip of 60 LED/meter WS2815 lights with a 12v 5A power supply? The BTF websites specs say that each led draws 0.3 watts of power and on a 5 meter strip thats 300 x 0.3 = 90 watts. Am I missing something? Are those actually 30 LED/meter? I'm trying to connect four of these together in parellel and power them accordingly but now I'm worried my wattage is way to the high with the power supply I have in mind.

      I have similar questions about the power supply.
      Haven't decided what to go with yet, 5V or 12V LEDs, but whatever the case may be what gauge wire do we use?
      Is it based off of the volts, amps or watts?

    • @Octoooo
      @Octoooo 4 місяці тому +2

      @@coreyevans9543 I soldered on the 18 gauge wires he recommended. If you're just running 1 or two strips then it's not incredibly necessary. I think if you're going for a longer run of multiple strips, I would recommend upgrading the gauge to 18 for less resistance throughout the strip and using a higher voltage strip like the 12 volt over the 5 volt.
      As a word of advice, try to find tutorials that mimick your own project and goals with that project as much as possible so you make the least mistakes.

      I've been doing some calculations and it seems that the lower 5V set-up is more expensive than the 24V set-up.
      I need about 13 metres of LEDs, which is around 300 watts. The thing I found that costs more are 5V LEDs and the wire to handle the amps.

    Good video, but you don’t say is how inefficient the ws2815 LEDs are, the high power consumption that they take and that they are quite expensive. The ws2811 on the bright 96LED/m variant is much more efficient and as good if not better than the ws2815 to voltage drop as it requires less amps.

    Chris, thanks for the great videos. It has really helped me understand the differences between all the available LED light options. I'm going to have a go at putting together a project for a night club using 130 meters of WS2815 on four separate circuits. I'm curious if you've done any side by side comparisons of the available controller units from BTF Lighting. I really like the results you're getting with WLED with the ESP32 project boards, but by the time I make these commercially usable and put them in project boxes, it's going to be more trouble than buying the off the shelf controller complete with their remote controls.

    • @ChrisMaherDIY
      @ChrisMaherDIY  Рік тому +2

      Thanks so much for watching and great question! So there really isn't anything wrong with using the connectors that the strip comes with but at least for me, since i'm always making different things with these lights, more times than not i'm using a leftover strip and its just been easier to solder on 3 wires to the beginning vs trying to solder another connector piece with another set of injection wires to the beginning. Now I also don't have to waste that first led and I could take my time to remove the pre made wires If I wanted to but for the sake of time, I just usually cut if off. Also for many of my projects, I need longer wires than the short ones they come with and i'm for the most part always using 18awg wires which are much thicker than the ones that come with it which will help with voltage drop when the power needs to be placed farther away from the beginning of the strip. Lol sorry for the long reply but I hope that makes a little sense!

    I have a few questions.
    1) When we use a mobile phone adapter instead of the voltage reducer that converts 12 volts to 5 volts in the video, would it be sufficient to supply 5 volts from the mini USB input of the ESP module?
    2) When we use a telephone adapter, is there a need to apply voltage to other points of the module?
    3) How many pins of ESP32 did you connect the green wire to?

      @ChrisMaherDIY  Рік тому +3

      Thanks so much for watching! So I have successfully powered the esp device using an old phone charger which would eliminate the need for the converter. You could then just power the led strip directly with the 12v power. You would still need to connect the gnd to the gnd of the 12v power supply though. I just connected the green data wire to 1 pin of the esp32 module. I believe it was the d4 or d2 pin.
