One minor detail that would be super helpful - especially in earlier episodes - Is player names should match what you call them. Settled being named Kotlin and other people having different names is super confusing for people who aren't watching these streamers 24/7

It's tricky too because when someone's filming from their own perspective, sometimes they'll have the plugin to change their own name, but from someone else's perspective, the account still has the real name. Or people will say the account name out loud instead of the player's name (that def happened with Settled/Kotlin a couple of times). Hard problem to solve.

The Olm challenge was great, I think a lot of people forget that a challenge should not be just fun to watch, but should be interesting to the participant's themselves. Some were like a chicken without the head, some had prior experience and some had plans to execute, which, along with the editing, showed to be an interesting test of knowledge and skill, and a bit of rng, which is kinda what gg is all about

  • @Salsmachev
    @Salsmachev 5 днів тому +94

    Thoughts on the Olm challenge:
    1) With all of these high level pvm challenges, I think there needs to be clear explanation of what is going on. Casuals like me have never fought (will never fight?) Olm, so we need to have someone explain the different attacks and the different strategies people use. I think in this challenge the explanations were okay, but it could have been earlier in the video.
    2) I agree something longer would work better. Nothing to add that you didn't say in the review already. More Soup says, better gear, etc.
    3) On the issue of having a more diverse set of locations rather than just one arena from 17 perspectives, I see what you're getting at but I don't think it's a serious problem. I wouldn't want every challenge to feature everyone in one room, but I don't think you should reject a challenge just because it's all in one arena.
    4) The biggest problem with everyone in one arena, imo, is that it can get confusing to follow. Especially when everyone is in the same gear. If everyone is in the same gear, I think having nametags above everyone's heads would be helpful (maybe not in the cinematic B-roll shots, but in the player's perspective shots). In general, I like challenges where we can see the player avatars, or where they're all collecting different equipment that keeps them distinctive.
    Edited to add:
On the pvp challenges/eliminations being too one sided: Have you considered doing challenges with a pvp component tat aren't straight pvp challenges? What you were saying made me think of Survivor, where the show has moved away from purely physical challenges (which made strength a huge asset in the early seasons) and towards more complex challenges where there might be a strength component, but the victory usually comes down to a final puzzle. Castlewars was kind of like that, where being good at pvp was an advantage, but at the end of the day even J1mmy could participate meaningfully and larger strategy carried the win more than pvp skill. I think you've also mentioned a possible "you have 15 minutes to gather gear by skilling, and then you fight" kind of challenge, which might balance out the advantage of the PVPers.

It could also help to do a challenge like this later in the season, (or even as an elimination), so there’s just literally fewer people. The TOA tank test was much easier to follow because there was never more than 4 people, so it was simpler to track the four “narratives” compared to 17 identical looking avatars

Point 1 is exactly what I was going to comment as well. I think the beauty of most GG challenges is even if you don't play runescape it's easy to understand what's going on: go get this item, solve this puzzle, kill each other, etc. But the PvM stuff, especially at such a high level, is just really hard to understand even if you do play runescape because not everyone even does chambers. This was one of the few episodes I mostly checked out of because I really didn't have any idea what was going on.

I think you can run this one back with a twist, team tanking have the players gather an inventory for a raid on a budget / time restriction and then announce that players will be teamed and pool resources. Allow the teams to nominate who takes what into the challenge. Last man standing wins for the team!
Alternatively have teams nominate raids for other teams to tank in and run it side by side.

    • @NotFinalTillVinyl
      @NotFinalTillVinyl 5 днів тому +1

I think team tanking would also work for a pvp challenge that could balance out a bit of the edge the pkers have. Maybe something like Team A starts from the wildy ditch and runs north through multi and gets points for each wildy level they make it to and Team B tries to stop them, then switch sides. Could reduce the potential one sidedness but still let the pkers fully use their skillsets to try and get an advantage

I actually really liked the challenge, and generally really enjoy the high level PvM challenges. What I'd say is that Olm is pretty complicated, and a lot of viewers probably have absolutely no idea how the mechanics work. I've cleared Olm a number of times and I still barely know. It might be helpful to include a little explanation of the mechanics before the challenge in a situation like this so the viewers can tell when participants are making a mistake, and who is doing well. Otherwise, it kind of just looks like they're all running around and randomly taking damage.

I loved the Olm challenge! I totally understand how its hard to actually do logistically and from an editing standpoint, but I thought it was unique, a fair mix of rng and skill, had chaotic interactions (people accidentally or intentionally griefing each other) and plans working or failing hard. I see where some people disliking it are coming from, maybe I just enjoy the chaos and raids a lot, but I'd love to see similar challenges or even a challenge made up of a series of mini challenges like this. Also super cute dog, good on you prioritizing them.

I actually really liked the "multiple takes on the same 4 minutes" approach in this challenge. It felt like we finally got a challenge where every second was accounted for and commented on, which I liked because there was so much going on at once to take in.

I really enjoyed the challenge as a fast paste high stress challenge. Was a welcome change of pace! However, I feel like the context matters a lot. Its was enjoyable Because it was a difference pace than ep1 and 3. I think too many challenges like this would take away from the complex and creative consept that we all know and love.
I also get the argument that everything being in the same room, at the same time, can feel less engaging than challenges where switching perspective, puts you on the other side of Gielinor, with a completely different plan, doing something completely different.
If this challenge had something like heats, or options for the players:
-Choose one of the four toa bosses, each one having a different set of gear attached. Pick the one you feel the most comfortable with, or crunch the numbers and pick the one that should have the lowest dps against your assigned gear, then the tank test starts.
All of a sudden you have the same challenge but with different plots, and different hurdles with different perspectives. (Similar to the heat based tank test in ToA, later in the season)
Bottom line, i enjoyed it, but i can see where the criticism is coming from

It was a lot of fun chaos and damage numbers popping up constantly but I couldn't really follow well. I do think the better gear so they lasted longer and allowed for more Soup Says would've alleviated that a fair bit.

I feel like for me anyway the best challenges are when you give the competitors a small amount of time to prepare a inventory and gear setup for the challenge you just announced to them like the wilderness boss challenge from season 3 because everyone is going in with a different strategy and are doing different ideas like how soloMission went in with a lobster pot and dark fishing bait to make sure he keeps his supplies up or Torvesta with the purple sweets to heal and use as a stam, When you force them to think on their toes using a set amount of gp to spend that can be used in so many different ways it creates so many different applications towards the challenge to be done

-With the Mobile update recently, it could be interesting to see them do some complex pvm or pvp

  • @Rimas.Kirslys
    @Rimas.Kirslys 2 дні тому

Might be an interesting mechanic for next GG:
Before season starts, each player secretly picks an anchor (viewers know their picks).
An anchor is another player that you drag into the elimination round along with you.
If your anchor is already eliminated, the elimination slot opens up for a volunteer.
Volunteers, given that they win the elimination round, gain immunity for next week and they can pick a new anchor for themselves. If they already have an anchor they'd like to keep, they instead get exclusive information about a player of their choice - who is that player anchored to and by?
If there are multiple volunteers, the person being eliminated picks one of the volunteers.
If nobody volunteers, then the player being eliminated pick their own opponent. In this case, the elimination winner picks a new anchor (or swap, if they desire to), but doesn't get immunity for next week.

I think the challenge was a good idea. However, a little pre run down of what his attacks are and how to avoid/mitigate them would have helped. That way we know who is getting unlucky, who is playing bad, and who is getting sabotaged vs watching people just get damaged and not necessarily knowing why. I've played lots of runescape, but I've never done raids, so even I was kind of lost on the challenge. Just my two cents though. Appreciate all the hard work you've done over the years!

  • @the_twig131
    @the_twig131 4 дні тому

I'm not a RuneScape player, so one of the things that I think detracted from this challenge for me was the fact that i had no idea what was going on. I could tell that the green meteors were bad, and I picked up that standing next to someone on fire set you on fire too, but i still have no idea what 'running the head' means.
I do like the idea of a survival challenge though, or maybe a group raid.
I recently watched Settled's Swampletics, and one of my favourite parts of the series was the Nylocas room in the Theatre of Blood. It was really easy to understand, three colours for the three different damage types, and you need to stop them eating your pillars.
I wonder if some kind of co-op survival challenge could work. Give a team of 3-4 some crap gear, and whoever survives the longest wins. If they complete it, tiebreaker is number of pillars remaining or time taken/damage dealt to the big boss Nylocas at the end.

I liked this challenge during the season, but I agree with what some other folks said, unless you do raids, it's hard to tell who's making mistakes. A brief explanation of how the mechanics work would be helpful, and I also think doing this a little further into the season would be good. Maybe 12-14 players? Olm would be a little less hard, you can send them with a little better gear, and add in more Soup Says. I love the creativity and the willingness to take risks and accept feedback. Thanks Soup!

I think it's worth comparing this to the TOA tank test at the end of the season. In that one you have multiple heats and multiple arenas. I think it could have been interesting to have the group progress through a rooms in COX, seeing their supplies dwindle and the members get winnowed down, before the final test at Olm. They'd have to start with little in the way of supplies / gear, and get supply drops as the challenge went on... but earlier bosses would impact the final tank test, if they even made it that far.
The banning twist was super cool.

As far as you discussing the popularity of challenges in the post GG survey, I found when I was answering that I had a harder time recalling the earlier challenges and I was more fond of the challenges that were more new (towards the end of the season). I think this challenge was actually cool but I had a hard time remembering it. I remembered the sabotage being super effective against Torvesta.
You also mentioned the sabotages not being super effective but I always think of the challenge where Faux had to wait 5 seconds before he could go and it was the difference in the challenge.

Honestly, I enjoyed the challenge. From my perspective, there were so many people so it actually balanced out the short time. Your editing was well done, because it did NOT appear at all that this only took 4 minutes, I legit would have said 10-15 minutes based on the way you put everything together, so well done there.
As for the challenge idea itself, I get it, it's not the most exciting, and it has the same perspective from everyone, plus there's a lot of potential for things to repeat. However, I think that because there was so many players in this one it balanced out. Boss survivals usually work best when you have a small group if the boss fight is intensive and requires strategy. But this boss essentially equals an obstacle course, a Wipe Out course in Runescape almost. The best way to do THAT type of boss fight is with as many players as possible, which you had here. It's not something you can do a lot, but it works well in small doses. I think it was just fine. Honestly I think that if the fight had gone on longer and you had managed to fit in more Soup Says and the armors were switched out, there would have been way more content and the message wouldn't have been as mixed.
    Doing good work!

I liked the the tank test challenge. However I think it would've been better later in the series. You would have less people where your knowledge of mechanics is more vital. Also, there could be more supplies to make the challenge last longer allowing for more "soup says" challenges.
On a side note, I think it would be an interesting change for running it back to make it a smaller team challenge to make it more cooperative to survive where longest survival time wins.

Honestly to redo this challenge I think it would make sense to make the players somehow earn their tank gear as a sort of two part challenge. Like go moneymake for 30 minutes and use the gp to buy the best tank set or something. Then you have a lot of different perspectives as people use their different methods and it adds a larger degree of skill/strategy. Then the climax of the episode is a roughly 5 minute tank test, so it also makes it so you don't have to stretch out 5 minutes of footage too long

A suggestion for Olm room if you want to try it again in the future - you could do it as a team-based challenge where you have groups that need to survive the longest.
It would incentivize people to trade each other food/supplies and decide who has the best chances but also dangerous to do so.
The fight could also have more opportunities for soup says like “everyone drop one potion and pick up another persons” which forces groupthink of who is picking up who’s supplies midfight.

I'm sure this has been suggested before but one fun idea would be to do like a survivors type of gielinor games where you choose something like varlamore and have 2 tribes or something. Winning challenges could give resources or advantages for next challenges etc. I'm sure you could interate on a lot of stuff as well to make them fit runescape, but I won't bother writing a 2000 word essay on the matter, but love the gielinor games and I think every season has always been better than the last so everyone has done amazing.

The chaotic, hard to follow nature of the Ohm challenge was actually something I liked about it. Most challenges have a clear storyline you are following and even if it isn't close you can sync it up with b-roll (Which, I also like no hate on that). But with this one it was just chaos, which might not have been popular with the fans but I enjoyed it. Could certainly use improvements though, I think if there is a way to make it more spaced out with more challenges or using the inventory or something instead of just everyone running around chugging brews maybe it could be a hit.

I think doing tank tests on a pvp world where other players have binds, 3-5 chinchompas, or a couple of spec weapons to choose from (defensive, offensive) would make it way more dramatic. I also would do smaller group heats where the top spots qualify for a final (maybe with an additional twist). That would give you more individual play and stretch out the content a bit for you to cut together. I really think what this one missed was the players getting to show their own strengths/personality through choices, and the drama that comes from pitting them against one another.

@@MyNameIsSalo Of course they could say no. But had people at Jagex found out about the request (which they do from the creators discord for sure) it wouldn't just have been someone like Ayiza refusing it and not mentioning it to anyone in the office. Any manager with a brain would've spared one or two people for 20 mins to get ~400k views for less than a total hour in man power on the game.
You're completely missing the point. Its not about shouting people out, its about it makes perfect sense business wise.
I'd wager it probably falls under a community managers job description or someone who liaises with content creators to do stuff like this.
Just like how someone had to set up the servers/accounts and stuff for Solo Missions private deadman event. That did more positive advertising for the game than the actual event did.
IIRC Archie early on held the job of doing anything related to this, probs much different now.

I really enjoyed the boss challenges this season. Since they went so quick maybe incorporating multiple rounds could be a cool twist on it. You could give mini boons to the players who did best in earlier rounds and subsequent rounds you could do the stuff like downgrading their armor like you wanted to in the original challenge. I also like the idea of using Soup Says during these challenges.

I think it would be interesting if the sabotage could be stored and used in whatever challenge they want during the season. Balancing this would obviously be difficult, but some potential options are:
    - If you already have a sabotage stored, you cannot win another one (they can only choose the money or the perk)
    - Myultiple sabotages cannot be used on the same person in one challenge, but two different people can be sabotaged in the same challenge (might make it more balanced/interesting than a single person)
    - You, as the person who has the sabotage stored, get to be more crafty about when you use the sabotage. Do you use it immediately to try to get someone out, or keep it for a later challenge when the competition is (in theory) stronger?

I loved the Olm challenge, and was honestly hoping to see more like it. The fast/brutal/FFA-style challenges are a great change of pace in my opinion. In terms of the sabotages, I think they felt a bit anemic mostly because players who got sabotaged often didn't get chosen for elimination, possibly due to pity/people being impressed by them powering through a sabotage, so it almost felt like a benefit in some cases.

I think the most interesting aspect of the olm challenge was how players could intentionally spread the fire to one another and try to sabotage each other. This type of dynamic also occurred later in the kephri challenge. I think for a similar boss challenge in the future, focusing on one where players can interact with one another during the challenge, and create stories that way, would be good.

An idea for weeks where you have a prime number of players, and you don't want to do a solo challenge: consider some kind of game called "Odd one Out". For example in this video in week 2 you have 17 players, you have 8 teams of two competing against a single player with some kind of steroid/buff. You could make this even deeper by making the elimination for the week depend on the outcome of the challenge as follows--scenario 1: any team that is unable to defeat the single player goes into elimination, with the elimination being a partners challenge. If the single player wins the challenge, then all of the other teams compete in elimination. The losing team is either completely eliminated, or it goes to a vote among the remaining players to eliminate one player from the losing squad. Scenario 2: the single player is defeated by all teams. The single player then competes in elimination, either against a player voted in, or against the worst performing team from the challenge.
As for what the challenges would be, I don't know, you're the big brain here, but it could definitely be interesting the next season to see some kind of format where partners or teams are competing against a buffed single player.

I thought it was a cool challenge idea, although for me it felt clear watching the episode that the challenge had gone much shorter than you anticipated. I’ve also never done Olm so it was tough to keep track of the actual mechanics aside from the falling crystals. If it had gone on longer like you hoped, I think having people do the soup says challenges and downgrade gear would have been fun to see.
I loved the pvp elimination though. I thought it was cool you could basically just watch their cursors to understand everything you needed to know, at least for people who understand what the prayers and inventory items are

Caveat: I am not an OSRS player and I’m a huge Settled fan, so take this bias into account.
I honestly liked the challenge. I thought it was interesting and different. I honestly think a lot of people can fall into the trap of thing I like less = bad. In reality, I think this season was filled with great challenges. In a sea of 9s and 10s, an 8 is going to look bad by comparison. This would likely be close to the bottom for me as well, but I still liked seeing it play out (bottom is the 5v5 relay match because, as I’m not a player, I had no idea what was going on. Still a good challenge though, but it was my least favorite).
Not to take away from people who genuinely just didn’t like the challenge, I just think that’s a trap people can fall into.

It did feel like the episode ran long, altho we didn't realise til the end just how short the actual challenge was!
I think you probably didn't have to stretch it out as much as you did in the editing room - cut a few alternative perspectives (Torvesta and Skillspecs was a good bit to keep haha). Not sure if a little bit more of an explainer for people who have no idea how Olm works nearer the begining - either from you or from the players themselves who knew what to look out for.
With some tweaks I think it could work for a future GG. You have a good feel for what makes a good GG challenge, its good to test things out and learn how to adapt.

re Sabotage effectiveness: I think they were pretty solid overall! Players overcoming the sabotage and coming out on top is cinema, and as you mention, it wouldn't be interesting if it was functionally eliminating someone's chances entirely. Maybe they weren't always super impactful, but that's usually the sabotaged player being crazy skilled.

But... I also get that this stuff can be very incomprehensible to someone who doesn't play OSRS or only plays casually/doesn't watch other OSRS content. High level stuff just has so many mechanics. So from the perspective of a player, I want these episodes a lot. From the perspective of an audience member... I understand if you have fewer of them.

I think the issue with sabotages is that they can hit someone who isn't very good at the game they're about to play. Like, Torvesta wasn't going to win the tank test, he didn't really know Olm. IMO, you should let them choose who gets sabotaged after fully explaining the challenge rules so the sabotage can be targeted at someone who might make the tribunal otherwise. Possibly also let them know what the sabotage will be, but I could understand those might be tougher to come up with than the challenges themselves, and you might want to keep them for later.
Or, if you don't want the sabotages to be too powerful, give the general category of skill that the challenge tests instead of the full challenge itself (PvE, PvP, game knowledge, etc)

I can't say I had a big positive reaction like I had with the non-tean yellow clicking (in the finale?). But it was pretty hard for me to keep track of who was who in the frenzy.
As for the sabotage, I feel like in previous seasons, penalties would take you from top to middle or middle to bottom unless you put in a heroic effort. Then if it was a top player odds are they'd be voted in. But here, people were a bit more skittish to vote in the good players because they could pick someone who they could probably beat, and then you'd have a target on your back. So high stakes and narrative building? Yes, but not enough incentive for the players to use without it being much stronger

My feedback: it's good to hear the struggles with this episode so it makes sense, but the soup says portion added nothing to it. I think they needed to be harder, more frequent, and/or sillier.
For example, you could do a soup says with the party plugin that lets you ping tiles, and do a true soup says throughout. Ping a tile "soup says go to the tile I'm pinging". If they don't go to the tile they need to drop 1 brew or something. "Go to this tile". If they do go to that tile they need to drop 1 brew. Makes people do the classic version of simon says where they need to make a split second decision to start moving or not start moving, with everything being hectic. Add in another rule that says you cannot pick up supplies on the ground unless soup says to (gives permission). That would add a bit of a musical chairs element to it as well. You could even pack yak brews and enter the boss to drop supplies throughout that people would have to stare at until you offered permission to pick then up.

I think with this challenge it came across as exciting, and it's a great idea. Would it work better somewhere else? Might need a little bit more testing to find the right place for where it would work the best, to get that guaranteed chunk of time spent in the activity. I liked it a lot because at the end of the day I'm biased, I love your content, HOWEVER. Even for me as a lifelong RuneScape player, albeit not so much osrs, it was so chaotic that it was a little difficult to follow primarily because of all the different perspectives being essentially the same if that makes sense? Everyone's experience was a four minute melting pot of chaos and a couple hurdles thrown in too, and I know I rewinded a couple times on my first watch through which I normally wouldn't do at all. (Edited to add it was not apparent that the challenge was so short, however after finding that out it makes a lot of sense, and also the pvp challenge was perfect)
To summarize, really cool idea, and I think in a place where it's a bit easier for so many people to tank and maybe a few more stages if somehow possible then it would be excellent. Don't bin this one, it's worth coming back to.

A friend of mine watched the series with his wife (who doesn't play), and she was left out completely whereas race challenges, like the red click race, is easier for even completely new viewers to get quickly. if I remember right, the winner of the previous episode chose at the end of that episode whether they want to sabotage and whom, right?
I feel like maybe the sabotages would be more impactful and more strategic if the player only announces they want to sabotage but they get to chose their target once the next challenge is revealed to them. that way they can chose to either sabotage someone who's expected to be strong in that specific challenge to try to even the playing field or they can chose to dunk on someone who's weaker to ensure they themselves aren't last. or they can still do it based on just general GG politics.
it has been a while since I watched it, so I could be wrong, but the way I remember it, I think an issue was that the sabotage sometimes hit a player that was neither at the top nore the bottom of a challenge, which means it didn't affect them as much as it could have.
