Coins can catch on old plates too, because when they’re thrown into the privy, they sink to the very very bottom unless something catches them on the way down

Almost losing the flashlight sparked a memory. Back in the eighties me and a couple of buddies were digging in Hopkinton, Mass. We were tunneling under a roadbed that was made from fill from a prior town dump around 1900. There was 1850's stuff on top of 1900 stuff. I was about 10 ft. down at a 45 degree angle on my belly The tunnel was about 3 ft. wide. Pretty sketchy. My light caught a crack forming at the end of the tunnel. I was barely able to back out before the roof fell. The flashlight is still there, but I think the batteries might be dead! When we came back, the town had filled and compacted the whole site. Too bad, because we were pulling some nice stuff out of there, including pontiled medicines, potlids, and a clean Harden's Hand Grenade. Lost a good flashlight, though!
Funny you say to dump out the pots. I was digging in an old store dump on a property my dad bought it had been remodeled into a multi family apartment building and found an old shaving razor blade holder and it was kinda rusted. I tossed it to the side and when it hit the ground I heard that oh so recognizable sound of silver coins. I quickly recovered it and broke into it with my shovel to find I’ve 10k in pristine silver coins. I talked to the previous land owner and asked about the history of the place and found that his great grandparents had an Inn there well before it was a five and dime store which it remained until the 50s. It had a multi use bathroom that back in the day travelers would pay to use the bath house. Apparently they would throw their old razor blades in the slot it had in it which was built into the old wall(the slot being in the steel box I recovered that was used as a throw away for used razors ). He remembered rehabbing that level in the 60s and tearing the wall down. He said he specifically remembered throwing that shave bin away cause the wall was lat board plaster with two or three sheets thick more of drywall where someone had just rocked over the previous layer thru the years and he wasn’t having fun ripping it out. He remembered finding that old shave box and smashing it out with a sledge hammer. Probably why he didn’t hear the coins from all the demo noise. He said it was a long day of many wheel barrows full of asbestos filled loads he hauled out to the dump hole they had dug. We were digging just at the right spot lol. I gave him a handful of coins. That was before I knew how much they were worth lol. We took them to a coin dealer and sold them for 10k I still wonder what we gave him and how much more value there actually was. And I am sure that the dealer got a good deal. Cause when he said how does 10k sound I couldn’t say sounds good to me fast enough. I was 23 in college. I’m 50 this year. And I have often wondered what we actually gave that dealer and how hard he laughed with his buddy coin dealers when he showed them all the silver seated Liberty and Morgan dollars they had stole from us for a song. Hindsight 20/20. Great video. Thanks for the great not so great memory lol. If they ever invent time travel I guarantee I’ll be going back to fix that mistake 🫤🫤🤣🤣😂✌️✌️✌️
Really not sure if it was someone later on in the buildings history that used it for a place to hide coins and they passed and it was covered over or if travelers would deposit coins as a tip for the maid to find. Was my best digging find to date. I’ve never passed on a can or any jar since. I check everything well before I discard it now and since lol.
That’s a helluva story !! I can’t believe a batch of silver coins would be worth so much. I’ve heard legends of the ones from the Carson City Nevada mint selling well but WOW - yeah there must’ve been something worthy in there for them to make such a high initial offer. But that’s just your digging rite of passage. Every beginner digger finds some good shit and usually gets talked out of it by ppl more experienced and older. It happened to me also when I was in my early 20s! But fortunately I was always such a pack rat I stubbornly held into mostly everything and ignored most of the offers! And now I’m glad I did ! But those couple offers that I did take still keep me up at night for sure! But hey think of it this way - the coins were free !
We give property owner or contractor first pick, if they are interested, then take the rest and make a good-sized pot for a year or two, then flip a coin for first pick. We wait until the pot is big enough so that even the person who comes in last on the coin flip gets something good !

When you find old horse shoes don't turn them upside down its bad luck. Keep all the luck from spilling out by keeping the shoe upright. We are finding the discovery that all those whiskies, beers, (sodas and mineral waters) do have the bromos but they also had pepper sauce, celery sauce, Lea&Perrins, and ketchups. This also includes pearl onion bottles, olives, and pickles. There are no other food bottles in the area. The majority of logic would say that they bots came from the local taverns and bars - where such Bloody Mary vodkas (or gins !), and other such worcestershire sauce in a whisky, would be mixed drinks. These dumps were NOT household discards - but the local alcohol industry !!! Don't discount when you start finding mustard, ketchups, onions, olives, pickles together with whiskeys and beers that these were household - they were bar bottles !
I agree - you see lots of sauce botts buried behind old inns and saloons, etc; anything that had a restaurant ! Worcestershire sauce was used to mask the flavor of rotting meat before the age of refrigeration !

BUT there were some San Francisco enterprises that employed an English glass works to blow their bottles. H.P. Wakelee's medicine botts are an example. I shall have to do a video on that !

Bill Lockhart of the Bottle Research Group gave information on 4 fruit jar/closure patent dates in 1893: April 11, July 11, Nov 7, and Dec 5 He mentions that the San Francisco & Pacific Glass Works (1876-1902) once made Victory jars and this could then be the Victory Jar Co. that could be in this (1893-1902) period, and then an interim of (1902-1914) and the Victor(y?) Jar Company could continue with (1914-1923) ?? with a jobber of unknown location and origin as the A S Co - which is the closest to an unknown makers mark for the A G Smalley Company of Boston (jobber, contractor, and distributor who could have filled the (1902-) period.

The sparkplug thing is (I believe), you use the ceramic part of the plug to make scratches on glass windows which then allow you to more easily smash out a window in an emergency.
Hay Crazy Ned,got a proposition for you,we own a 100 year old log home in the Sierra Nevada foothills,famous for the forty niner gold rush,never been dug,have coke a cola bottles barrier under cement walkway in front of cabin,on the side of cabin there is a 15 ft. Walkway that ends with with no building there,are no known property lines but piles of rocks(my husband ran property lines for 25 years for private logging outfit) (I use to find & dig old dumps in area),I can show you a few of those & dig our place too,Reply ASAP. & dig our place too,reply ASAP!

Hi Deb ! I think Warner's are a great category for the beginning and advanced collector alike! There are many variants that come in many colors, due to some of them being blown in Europe. The Patreon is good so far - thanks again for your support. It is much needed/appreciated ! I cannot answer that for you, as western botts come in so many shapes n forms and it really depends on what appeals to you visually. I can tell you that blob sodas and applied top meds are trending right now...
Shoe polish blacking was also known to be used in polishing the cast iron stoves and outer surface of the cast iron pots keeping them black and shiny ... also if Mister Model T and A were around, they would also be blacking the (said) white tires or reblacking the black tires. It could also be used to black up a black top hat.
Handle is hollow so you can hear and feel different soil textures that the shaft plunges through. Anything that feels different than the natural native soil should be tested into.

The sparkplug porcelain smashes car windows No problem even very small pieces work you have to throw it fast so it hits hard and aim for the corners where there is more tention on the glass if you hit it in the middle it will just bounce off and not break the glass ,done it heaps of times on old wreaks just for fun and to show people that think it doesn't work ,I've broken windows with pieces a 1/4 size of a pea
@@BottleNed any sparkplug only works on safety glass that I know of never tried it on other glass ,that table you where throwing it at should be safety glass but you would have to hit it around where the legs are mounted to it ,I guess thats where the tention is as in the middle the glass flexes
