A song of vulnerable narcissistic abuse against Rob Thomas by his GF when he was young who (for an illustrative episode) ended their relationship the same day she stole his clothes and donated them when he wasn't in a place financially to just replace his entire wardrobe. He said he didn't want the song to just be him whining so he thought it would be more powerful to put it in her voice. A masterpiece of the genre.
I've always really liked this song, mostly for the chord progressions. Now that I know the backstory, this song is even heavier. His GF was trash. I understand why he would compose the lyrics to be from her attitude toward him. It also makes sense - known this now - that Ken would pick this as his favorite song. Yes, it's a bop. Always has been. But now if you see it from how Ken feels regarding how Barbie treated him, it adds to the story. I can understand why they picked this song. The team did their research on all the songs.
@@yippeeyokai5750 I just watched Sh0eonhead's review of it. Interesting how they pretty much failed if they were trying to be like mainstream feminism.
@@JohnCephas I saw the movie and there are a fun moments, but I don't know what the point of the movie actually was. Ken has been treated as a 2nd class citizen and then he discovers a world where his voice matters. Then he goes home and tries to liberate other the other Kens. That kind of makes him the hero. It's a confusing movie.
Oddly enough as it is..this was me and my Dads song...we used to sing this on karaoke and split the male and female parts 😂😢 He passed away in 2018 at 38.. I used to listen to this and just cry. Now, I sing it and just remember all our memories and how we'd jam hardcore to this.. and now its one of the songs I play to put me in a better mood..❤
Always loved this song, didn't know for the longest time it was about an abusive relationship he was in. It's such an important topic and a beautiful song.
I am willing to bet money that a lot of people are listening in because of the Barbie movie, that or they are coping with the fact patriarchy has nothing to do with horses.
It was a weird moment in the theater when this song came on during Barbie and despite not having heard it for years, I could still sing along. (I didn't because that's rude af, but I matched it in my head.

@@FingersCrossedBeauty OMG SAME. Not to get all nerdy with it, but I’ve been thinking about this psychological concept called “integrative complexity” where we can both love AND hate something, have various types of feelings to reconcile (‘both/and’ instead of ‘either/or’ mentality). I remember *that part* with Abby, and I’m looking at her and her crew, thinking “I’m going to find and kill each one of you…” And then at the end being like, “You know what, I think I understand what you did, Abby. I probably would have done the same.” Lastly, the way Abby says to Lev, “You’re my people” gets me every time. Anyway, random thought sidebar from Barbie and this song 😅😆 !
About 2018 , this song Retroactively Suddenly got Popular AGAIN! Seems like a lot of the “90s Stations” added this to their Radio Rotation at the same time. Cuz for YEARS “Unwell” was really the Only song of theirs the got Consistently played Across the Country. “Bent” was really the only other song that didn’t get forgotten for the most part.
Favorite song ng ex ko ito 😢 So sad naghiwalay kami for time lang. Walang nangyaring lukohan, nawalan lang kami ng oras sa isa't isa. Pure and contented ang mga puso namin. it's been a year. And now I have my own family 😊 At binata pa siya. Sana mahanap niya na yung para sakanya ❤ Alam mo na yan minahal kita ng buo and sana happy ka para sakin.
Lol i love all these new people to this kind of music. No hate just sayin it's awesome that movies will bring in so many people to different music. Was good back in the 2000s still good
I didn't watch Barbie though Margot Robbie is hot and good choice just enjoy Matchbox 20 once in a while. Actually does remind of times I had with someone but pushed her away just not physically. The song has a deeper meaning for me
Driving home solo from work tonight - I am full volume on stereo listening to this song. I take the song as being a bully and also the effects of loneliness that occurs from being utterly alone and bullied too. Our social status of family or marriage or divorce or dating or with friends and siblings is irrelevant - when one is in a room full of people and still feels totally alone! The effects of being pushed around and the doornat for others - when no one dares come to you to check on you or be there for you or ask - what can I do for you versus - you always being their go too. I was thinking what a great drinking song! Just to get passed out on alone. If - only I drank now. Too old now and my body rejected all alcohol years ago. Isn't worth the hangover and belly problems. Then I thought - a rolled smoke would be good - but I don't even do that now. As my fav smoke partner and best friend walked away a long time ago... And then I thought - I just need louder speakers. But that won't work with my factory stereo. SSSOOO - then I just start laughing 😂😂 Put my hand out of the car window to enjoy the warm night air and kept on singing to the top of my lungs with this song on repeat. To be a bully or to allow others to bully you - don't matter. Because in the end - lonliness is all that one has to hold onto and to find a great song to hug and understand you- when no one truly gets this. Guess I am different and even in loneliness of my life - contentment with myself is all I have and ever did. The rest can push or be pushed and I will always make a way to make me smile - even if - I am the only one who knows I am smiling and laughing!

Now that I know the inspiration for the song, it seems even more ironic that the feminists behind the Barbie movie decided to use it.

Ken has good taste in music. Barbie may not have been enchanted by his performance of this song but I was.
Yeah, it's a great song
Massive props to Ryan Gosling for matching the exact same pronunciation of "granted" in his cover.
It makes me happy, seeing someone make a new lyric video for this song. It's pretty old at this point but it's still so good
