100% agree and feel your pain. Been that way for 54 years, but it’s lessening. As a pastor, I really think it’s a spiritual battle with idolatry. And that makes breaking the bonds much more difficult.

I feel the same way about the Atlanta Braves. I wore a Braves shirt every day to school from 9th grade until I graduated college. All of my friends and family know how much the Braves mean to me. The Braves have only won one World Series since I have been alive. So many people reached out to me when they finally won another World Series. I try to watch as many games as I can. It is hard to not let the outcomes of the games affect me day to day since I am so invested in the Braves. One thing that helps is I always remember no matter the outcome of the game, I still have to wake up and go to work the next day. Win or lose I will always root for the Braves.

I love that you're talking about this. I personally do feel overwhelmed at times with all the losing. Sometimes if I'm already have a bad day, following my team doesn't help. Sometimes I need a break for a day or two. I love watching vintage games on UA-cam b/c I usually already know the final result, but not any of the details of what happens.

I used to feel similar. I just turned 42. I think I found my solution to this problem. I have an amazing wife, a 6-year-old and I have a 4-year-old. When I think about how much time I have left on this Earth, I don't know the day but I do know whether my team won or lost on one particular Sunday will matter zero the day I die. I decided I wanted to start living like I died and though I enjoy and appreciate my teams they won't be there for me when I take my last breath on the earth but likely it will be those that I love more. That's how I stopped being pissy after my team lost. Perhaps I divested my emotional attachment to my sports team and turned some of that investment energy to the things that really matter in life.

You’re not nuts, I felt the exact same way (skipping radio shows the next day, avoiding tv recaps, emotionally up or down depending on if the team won or not). It only changed for me once my father unexpectedly passed away (he was only 53 when he died). All of a sudden nothing really mattered like it used to. It sort of recalibrated how I perceived sports. I still care but not like how I used to.

This is why baseball is the best. Even when your team is lousy there’s always something to follow or root for - a player, and prospect, a record. Half the league competes for playoffs into August, and you can easily go to 5-10 games a year. Baseball is king, even when it’s a bummer (I hope Degrom comes back better than ever, BTW… I still love him)

I’ll tell ya being a DC sports fan (redskins, Nats, caps, wizards) and my alma mater Virginia Tech is one of the hardest. Then we get to relive each loss on radio and tv. I can totally relate.
When it comes to dealing with a loss or waiting for the team to win again I just think back to when we were winning and how amazing it felt to witness it.
One of the things that collecting does for us is it takes us back to a point in time, reliving a historical moment, when our teams won. I like to flip thru slabs or go thru my cards and reminisce those times.
Remember how you felt after the Rangers won?? Being a fan all those years then finally breaking thru in 2023? I felt the same way after the Nats won in 2019 after all those 95+ game losing seasons and heartbreaking losses in the playoffs.

My grandparents were original season ticket holders for the Broncos, and my Grandmother was the Matriarch of our families sports fandom. She listened to every Rockies game on the radio, she watched every Broncos, Rockies, Avs, and Nuggets game on the TV. Sports were always on in my Grandparents house, and I loved it. That fandom got passed to my dad, who passed it on to me. I'm like you, I LOVE my teams, and I LOVE watching sports in general. But I realized a long time ago, it's just a game. Sometimes they win, sometimes they lose. And the sun will come up tomorrow.

I used to be the same way 20 years ago. When the Oakland/Los Angeles/Las Vegas Raiders lost, I was a bear with a sore rear end for 2 days. I finally made up my mind that I cannot continue living like that and decided to follow and root for players who are good people (Mike Trout, Derek Carr) quickly come to mind. Even if Mike Trout and Derek Cart’s team lose, at the end of the day they are still good people. I still root for the Raiders but now take an I could care less whether they win or lose because I cannot impact the outcome of the game one way or the other.

Interesting video, thanks for sharing. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve gotten a lot less invested and stressed over how my teams do compared to how I was when I was younger. It still exists to some extent for the Dodgers and UCLA basketball. But I’ve definitely learned to appreciate sports as a whole and not just my teams (although that was always the case to some extent).
I remember when the Dodgers got knocked out of the playoffs last year, I was upset/disappointed for half a day and then looked forward to watching the other teams that were still alive. My next door neighbor, a much older woman, told me she was done watching and couldn’t stand watching after the Dodgers were out. Much to my surprise and delight, a few weeks later she told me what a good time she was having watching the Rangers and was so impressed by them.
Oh yeah, and college football is definitely the one sport where I watch tons of games of teams that are not my teams. It’s just the overall most exciting and interesting sport to me these days (despite the stupid amount of transfers these days.). Sorry, so long winded there.

I'm in the crazy boat with you, Mike! Mizzou barely beat Vanderbuilt yesterday, and I'm happy they won but really angry they looked so bad! I don't have the same vested interest in the NFL because Saint Louis has lost 2 teams. The Blues finally win the cup, then dismantle the team within a few seasons and now they're in full blown rebuild mode. The Cardinals have sucked the last couple seasons. I'm a fan and even though they drive me nuts sometimes and make me so angry! At least I have the Chiefs and Royals. I have always lived and died by my sports teams but I get the most emotional over Mizzou football.

I came to this realization during the 2011-12 Ravens seasons. After the lee evan dropped td from Flacco following by Cundiff wide left at the end of the championship game sent me onto a depression for months.
The next year the ravens having the miracle win vs Denver then beating the mighty Patriots to go to the super and they win even after the blackout and SF comeback. It was after the superbowl I realized, I still have to get up and go to work tomorrow. I'm not getting a superbowl ring. Aside from meeting a few of the players at signings/card shows they don't even know I exist.
I turned the page after that. Win or lose. I'm over it within an hour. It's not worth getting too high or too low from the outcome of a game.
I still watch my orioles/ravens religiously. But no longer become too emotionally invested in the outcome.

Not sure it ever gets a lot better Mike, for me it is a little easier. Being a Dodger, Laker and Rams fan I have been lucky enough to see them all win a title in my life time, that is all any fan can really ask for. That feeling when they win makes all of the loses bearable.

I used to be wholly invested in my teams and would be emotionally affected if they won or lost, especially in the post season. Then something happened. I watched my (then) football team move. Watching the team move really changed my perspective. We the fans don’t really matter. To bond with a team, the players, and have memories with loved ones attached to them just for them to chase the dollar in LA hurt. Do I still love sports, yes. Am I still a football fan, yes. However, the dynamics have changed.

Many years ago, I used to allow my mental state of mind to be driven by how my favorite sports teams did in their most recent games. But as I got older, I started to focus on what was really important to me in life. When I did this, I realized that letting, a small group of athletes performance on their platform impact how I felt was silly. Life is about much more than how other people perform at something. Now it isn’t hard for me to watch a game and root for a team, but be unaffected by the outcome emotionally. In the grand scheme of life it’s just not that important.

The beauty of being a sports fan is the drama that isn’t scripted like everything else in pop culture.
When you root for a team, the % are against you. Each pro league has 30-32 teams, so chances are not great that your team will win it all. It may take years, decades, even never.
I’m a Philadelphia sports fan and love the Eagles, Flyers, Sixers and Phillies. I started following them religiously around 1979 so that is essentially 180 total seasons between them. I’ve only seen 4 parades (1980 Phillies, 1982-83 Sixers, 2008 Phillies, 2017 Eagles) and that’s it. Yet i keep coming back every year knowing I’ll probably get heartbroken by all 4 of them. Lol
In saying all that, i don’t take sports too seriously and get angry like i did when i was a teenager or in my 20’s. I just don’t let it affect me THAT much when they lose. As Sonny said to C in A Bronx Tale, “Do you think Mickey Mantle cares if your father can’t pay the rent?” I love sports, but i’m not going to let it affect my life once the game is over.

I have learned to let it ride the older I've become.
I still look back with great joy when my teams won 🏆 the title.
My Packers have 2 SB wins in my memory & failed 54 times.
Penguins 5 cups failed 49 times
    Baseball - Pirates 2 W.S. failed 54 times
    Basketball Bucks 2 🏆 failed 54 times.

As a Pittsburgh fan, I can tell you there is a different aura of people when the Steelers win vs when they lose. If the Steelers win, Mondays are a little easier to get through. I think it stems from the times of the 70’s Steelers and their Super Bowl wins. Dallas is the same way (70’s and 90’s) People are used to to winning and almost demand it. Pittsburgh has essentially lost hope with the pirates but the penguins and Steelers get everyone vested in them.

I became a cowboy fan in the late 60s I lived thtough the Staubach era and the aikman and Emmitt era and got sucked in to expecting this team to do well and win Championships. Especially in the 70s even when they got down in a game you always had that expectation that Roger would somehow lead them back and they would survive Now, there is none of that expectation.... but I am still fighting every weekend not to let this team destroy my week. After the ridiculous loss to Green Bay in the playoffs last year I told myself that I am divorcing the Dallas Cowboys and today I did not even watch much of the game at all-knowing that they were going to lose it. I don't know how a real fan of a team can do it so that you can still enjoy a game when your team is playing and not let it consume everything else! At least we can watch old games on UA-cam and remember when players had heart and weren't only in it for the huge salary (Dak, Cee Dee)....but believe me this season after being a fan for over 50 years I am really trying to not let a Dallas loss on Sunday make life miserable......but it ain't easy

I can't say that I'm a die-hard fan of any team, but with my teams being the Cowboys, Penn State, and the Mets/Red Sox, I'm a glutton for punishment (and annual disappointment - with the possible exception of the Red Sox). It wouldn't surprise me for the Cowboys to turn things around and eek into the playoffs, only to lose in the first round. And while I think the Mets will make the playoffs, I'm sure they will fall short at some point in making the World Series. And Penn State just can't seem to win the big games against the top opponents. I don't watch a lot of games, but I follow scores on my phone. So that's probably why a loss doesn't affect me that much. But it also makes me wonder sometimes why I keep rooting for those teams. I guess for me, I'm not a bandwagon fan so I stick with the teams that I've rooted for since the early 80s and just take my lumps.

As a Detriot Lions fan, pro sports has always been about being entertained by great athletic feats as opposed to getting wrapped up in winning and losing. But as a Christian that believes we are all equal as human beings, the idea of there being “winners” and “losers” and one group deserving to feel superior to another never felt right to me. Winning means you out scored your opponent, losing means they out scored you. To let either of those outcomes bring me peace or disrupt my peace would mean I’m still finding a portion of my identity in something other than the Grace of God. Sure, you compete to win and strive to win, but if I have to win to feel good then I’m not finding my identity in the Grace of God, I’m finding it in the fleeting approval of man. Probably not a popular answer but I think it’s the most honest answer I can give 😅

All the times the Astros have beaten the Yanks in the playoffs, it's annoying af, but somehow not heartbreaking. Even when the NY Rangers lost in the Cup final to LA 10 years ago, and lost this year's East finals, it was tough, but somehow not like it was when living in New York. Maybe it's because I'm older, too. Maybe it's a bit of both. Interesting to think about.

Fandom isn't bad, but after a while, it might devolve into conspiracy theories if you're disappointed enough. And as a Washington fan, I've seen it go from one extreme to the other. Finally we might have a chance. But the NFL seems to keep Dallas in the spotlight one way or the other. So then my team ends up like the guys that used to play the Globetrotters. Maybe that will get better too.
NFL is all I really watch now - though I do like all the spring leagues. I stopped caring about hockey after the pandemic. Same with baseball, which now makes me feel strange that I still don't watch the Orioles, even though they're competitive again. Guess I will have to ease back into it.

Sports team owners are there to make money, not appease fans If you drop team favorites you can enjoy sports for what there intended, a release from day to day grind.

Great point Tony, but how do I undo 50 years of ingrained fandom for my teams?

@@BaseballCollector The realization you had I think is a great first step and understanding that 50 years is in the past and you can control the present. Maybe just focus on hobby for sports which is more individual in nature and not as team oriented, you're collecting knowledge and ability to interact within hobby is so vast you would make a great dealer, really enjoyed the grail collection content! We around same age and I recently took this approach and has made watching sports a lot more enjoyable.

You’ll put your pants on the next day whether your team wins or loses. I’ve stopped watching most sports as it’s just become too political for me. I realized it’s largely just a waste of time, used to keep people distracted and sedated while the government and corporations work against the people. I still like to follow MLB stats as I’m a baseball history fan but football and basketball are just horrible nowadays imo, zero player loyalty in those sports as the millionaires cry racism..ain’t for me dawg

Mike, Mike, Mike, I'm shaking my head because we could be the same person. We're the same age and coming at this from the same vantage point. My teams are different (Razorbacks, Chargers, Cardinals), but the thought process is EXACTLY the same. I've mellowed a little over the years mainly because my teams have simply worn me down. Like you, I find that I'm able to enjoy sports more when I'm not watching one of my teams. Baseball is especially tough because it's practically every night. I've changed tv packages and just not doing that anymore. I can listen to the game some IF I want to and just check in.

Great video and thanks for sharing. I used to live in CLT, NC and was a huge Panthers fan but we moved away. Now to me the NFL is meh and would much rather watch some college football games after yard work.
Now Sundays are devoted to more family time after grinding hard from the work week.
Sports are a great outlet and entertainment, but I don’t give it my heart anymore. Be blessed, Mike!
