    Great tips Matt. Here in NZ if the bottom plates have been left to soak up moisture during winter when humidity levels are so high. It can take weeks to get them back down to acceptable levels again. Also when using the short prong moisture meters. The needless need to reach the middle third of the timber for an accurate reading. So it is important to test timber through the face rather than the edge and get those pins right in.

    One important aspect not covered - joints, especially those between the sill plate and the subfloor. Water is trapped extensively in these areas and must be a focused point for drying since they are inaccessable by air or any means of assessment. Heat (not too much) and time are your friends prior to finishing.

    Thank you Matt Risinger for the scripture and asking for prayers for the people who went through the Hurricane. As someone who had to completely remodel our house after the 2004 trio we were hit with in Port St. Lucie FL we know full well the heartache and long process to rebuild. We sustained $275,000.00 worth of damage and it took 22 months to complete due to materials and labor shortages. Unless you have lived it you can’t fathom how hard it is. We spent 22 months as Missionaries going to New Orleans after Katrina donating our time and labor to help them. We are no longer physically able to do so due to age and injuries but please know you are all in our hearts and prayers even now. Thank you for being willing to share your knowledge with others. I’ve been building for well over 40 years and you still teach me things which I love.

    Just now watching this video. My dad and I are building my house debt free, so things aren't moving as fast as a professional builder by no means. We've had some rain on and off and I've been worried about my framework. I'm so glad to hear you quoting that scripture at the end, Matt. Puts things into perspective for sure! Thank you so much for having the courage to speak truth, even when you know not everyone who watches this will agree!

    What's sad is that here in Canada, many home center lumber yards are outdoor, so those nicely kiln dried lumber are again soaked in rain water. Some of them wrap the piles with plastic, but hey, once you open the plastic, the lumber are either soaking wet or moist, no where near dry. I don't know about in the US, but I think it's time to pay attention to how they store the lumber. It's extra effort to dry the framing, not to mention when some studs dry, they twist, which adds even more time to plan it down before finishing with drywall.

    You need a penetrating moisture meter to check the wood, you're going to ruin some framing if you check it with a pin meter and then cover it

    Hi Matt. My house was rained on with osb flooring 19 days out of 31 in May and few days in June, I see osb changed its color to dark wet, in some places I see green mold, but builder says it will dry and will be ok. How ok it is in your view, you are ultimate authority for me in anything related to construction of homes. Thanks a lot in advance! Moisture reading in some places still show above 15% and sometimes even above 20% with some mildew and green mold traces still present, not increasing though. The lumber on the other had is fine, dried pretty much to acceptable level, even though some changed color to dark, probably also mildew...

    Ive always wondered why why why WHY don't builders tarp their buildings so no water gets in? I see all these butt naked buildings going up getting rained on. Then they carpet everything and i come in to do a flooring job but i gotta sand down all the damn floor joints because they got soaked during the build process.

    Any chance in a future vid of showing how those talented carpenters put those arches up? Particularly curious as to how one face of the osb is joined to the other face....doesn't look like std 4x2 blocking....
    Fingers crossed for a fast recovery to those affected by Harvey.

    I’m a subscriber of the show Matt. Love the content. My wife and I are building a home as we speak. We’ve had a couple of rounds of snow on the home this far. Unfortunately we don’t have a roof on yet. I’ve noticed some of the 2 x 4 studs are getting some twist in them. Will those straighten back out as the home dries out or do you typically block it at the bottom plate or something to straighten the stud back out? Thanks advance for any advice you may be able to share!

    Thank you for this helpful video. I live in Florida and just bought a house under construction. The framing lumber has been sitting on site over a month and has been rained on daily for the last month. I talked with the builder, he said it’s okay, he does this all the time. When I mentioned about moisture test, he said it’s not reliable. When I stopped by the construction site today, some of the frame has already changed shape and bent. I’m a first time home buyer. What should I do in this case? Any inputs are greatly appreciated.

      Of course it may seem to be in poor taste to criticize the evoking of prayer under the dire circumstances experienced by many people in Houston (and on a UA-cam construction channel) and I appreciate the genuinely heartfelt sense of solidarity Matt shows with “our fellow man”. It seems, however, that actually doing something would be much more providential than praying.

    • @Z06Stingray18
      @Z06Stingray18 6 років тому +1

      Well with your logic, you're not worthy of trust or capable of making good decisions either because you can't even spell seem. Not everyone has to think the same way you do. There's such a thing as different opinions by intelligent people. Not all of them think the same way. Good luck with your close minded lifestyle - hope it doesn't screw you out of really cool experiences and opportunities because you get so offended by people praying.

    • @marcusthompson4324
      @marcusthompson4324 6 років тому +1

      Thanks for the reply. Praying does not offend me. It merely makes the person who is doing the praying look ignorant. I don't think he's a dumb person. Most people with at least some intelligence can fix their ignorance with just a little bit of education. By the way, please look up the definitions of seem and logic. You will learn that I spelled seem correctly and you don't seem to understand the meanings of logic versus thinking.
