I started making my own hair products fresh, no preservatives over a year ago. My hair is flourishing. I have a great routine down using my cleanser, ayurvedic mask, leave in, detangler and styler. It's more work, but preferred compared to shopping for brands.
Definitely the way to go! I don’t have the time or skill to mix my own products but am glad to have found so many brands that leave out all the nasty stuff to make things that do wonders for my hair! I hope your hair continues to flourish 😎
Haha! I checked the ingredients after I watched your video. Crazy thing, the ingredients on Amazon are fine, but on their website, a much different list 🤔
i need to know your thoughts now because im sure they wouldve changed the ingredients lists and they look good to me right now, the leave in conditioner, hydration elation and co wash are a regular use for me 😭
Thanks! I just checked that specific product, it looks fine. It’s definitely not every single product in the collection, although, and this really bothered me - the ingredient lists are different on the As I am website vs Sally’s vs Amazon, wth. I would think you can only trust what’s on that particular label. Even without having any of these 6 items, and I’m sure there were more, I just didn’t check every product, there are so many chemicals in there, and even if they aren’t “unsafe”, it’s just better to substitute those for something that will treat your hair naturally with superfood ingredients.
@@UptightCurlsbyAmanda thank You so much for checking. I pulled it from my shelf to look and I thought I was missing something. I was going to give it away. I only purchased it from Sally Beauty to get free shipping. I love a good moisture deep conditioner so I’ll keep it.

I recently tried beau peeps shampoo and aria conditioner my scalp reacted terribly, probably allergic to something itchy dry feeling. I just did a bald cut again I wanted to make grow my hair out, but after two months of growth I just realized I’m a bald cut soul. With so little hair and now new info about my go to hair products I’m going have to figure something else. Thanks for the heads up
I’m so sorry to hear that the Beau peep shampoo and the aria didn’t work for you! Which shampoo did you try? You are definitely the first I’ve heard of having a bad experience it must be an allergy. Have you ever had a similar issue in the last? Yea, about the As I Am products, I fully believe that the products were formulated to do whatever the packaging promises, I’m just not seeing a lot of responsibility in the formulation. Maybe you can target the top 5 ingredients in those products and try something else out. If I don’t have any ingredients you might want already on my ingredient finder I could certainly add them. Haha the life of the bald cut soul is probably much less complicated 🤩 Thank you for this feedback and I’d love to hear if you are able to track down the culprit ingredient. I’d say maybe you should try her Joy collection for sensitive scalps but it’s probably best to figure out what you reacted to first

Oh my gosh THANK YOU Amanda!!! God totally sent me to you to get this information tonight😀. I'm definitely going to watch more of you & get more facts!
I love the fact that you're so thorough with the ingredients! I wasn't trying As I Am products before and I'm definitely not trying them now. No thanks. lol!!
I've tried As I AM twice about 10 years apart. Once early in my natural hair journey and again in the past few months. I didn't really care for it 10 years ago and not impressed with it this go round either. My hair didn't hate it but didn't love it either.
Haha well all the more reason to just lay it down and try other and likely better options! Was it the Tiba naturals products you won in the giveaway? Have you tried them yet?
@@UptightCurlsbyAmanda yes, it was the Tiba Naturals that I won. I really like the leave in and the curl jelly. The shampoo doesn't work for me. Scalp feels dry and itchy afterwards plus every time I use it me eyes feel like they are on fire even if I get no where near my eyes. Must be the peppermint oil causing the burn. Deep conditioner and hair tonic, haven't used often enough to form an opinion on them. For whatever reason I put the DC in the fridge and keep forgetting it's in there. Once again, thanks for giving me the opportunity to try the products. Forgot to add that it was the Jamaican Black Castor Oil As I Am that I recently tried. Main reason I tried it was because I didn't she shea butter listed anywhere. :)
I loved the triple butter leave-in but wasn’t too fond of the curl jelly. I can see the shampoo not being for everyone. I like it enough but it was a bit consistent over the 3 weeks and it was pretty strong. I sometimes get eye burn from shampoos haha but don’t remember if I experienced that with this one. The hair tonic is amazing for me just as a treatment, i don’t use it as part of a real routine but people rave about it. If you’re looking for products without shea butter I encourage you to use my product finder, haha people looking to avoid coconut oil, shea butter, and glycerin were legit my whole reason for creating it haha Thank you for your feedback on the tiba naturals products and sorry about the shampoo! I have an unopened bottle of As I Am Olive & Tea Tree Oil Leave-in Conditioner that I will return to the store. I've purchased and used it twice before. I would like to know if methosulfate is okay in some Camille Rose products. Thanks for the heads up, Amanda
Behentrimonium methosulfate? (Some of these brands are lazy and don’t put full names, so that could be what they mean even if they don’t write it all out 🤦🏽♀️). Yes, that is fine. It’s “slightly” controversial, but it seemed to be unsubstantiated that there is anything at all wrong with it. It’s a surfactant and very widely used. You can find more information on BTMS on my website, and a bunch of other safe chemicals. If there are any specific ones you want me to research, do send me a message either here or on IG, I’d be happy to prioritize them. There are thousands of these things so things will be added slowly over time, hard to keep up!
Thank you, Amanda, it also has Polysorbate 60 and Coumarin in it along with PEGs so back it goes. Thanks for the information about Camille Rose. You are a God send ❤
Also about the methosulfate I was the lazy one lol It is spelled two different ways on the products I have. You reviewed the Camille Rose Almond Jai Twisting Butter. It contains Behentrimonium Methosulfate and the Camille Rose Curl Love Moisture Milk with Rice & Macadamia Oil contains Behentromonium Methosulfate. Tri means three. I don't know what tro means. I didn't want to write both long names out lol but I'm glad they are not in the damaging sulfates. Thanks again ❤
No problem! And now that you mention this, I do remember back in November in early stages of my database that Camille Rose specifically had a ton of typos on their ingredient lists, and they were inconsistent in the naming across products. Even the huge companies sometimes just really aren’t paying attention because they feel people are only looking at the first 5. Well I’m lookin at them ALL!! 😎
@@Matchalee123 Hi! I’m so so sorry i thought this was a comment on my mielle video. I can’t say something will or not happen with As I am use, I just fully believe that the buildup of using products with harmful ingredients over a lifetime has a non-zero chance of having negative affects. So in the off chance that you are sensitive to something and it doesn’t do well in your system, I really try to just steer clear. Camille Rose is a great brand, and I’ve reviewed I think 24 clean brands in my BoB123 series if you’d like to take a look at that playlist. Again, I’m so sorry i thought this was as spam comment originally. Apologies!!
My favorites are curls dynasty, Beau peep luxuries, and earthborn organics, but you can check out my website for clean products 😎 on the “brands & deals” page. Also sharing my review playlist, I ONLY review clean brands so many to check out! ua-cam.com/play/PL7XRkNSlCiKZeUpDKak6nMglCRyWlD5-s.html
Amanda you are just so incredibly helpful!!!!!! I just adore your content honestly you are one of a kind and WE APPRECIATE YOU!!! I’ll be sharing this video with my sister who using as I am weekly thank you so much!!!
Aw, thank you Ariel!!! I hope she’ll consider switching!! I don’t remember if i made it clear in the video though, not ALL of the products in the collection contain these ingredients, but a large enough number do (plus, annoyingly enough, the ingredient lists vary between their website and amazon, so that’s something and makes me trust this even less). Even if it’s 70% of their products that contain ingredients I don’t want, i at that point will personally decide to just pass on a brand. I don’t want to have to scour for “off” ingredients when I’m looking at products so I prefer to just stick with brands where I know anything I choose is ALL GOOD. Thank you again so much I’m so glad you enjoyed this video and i always love hearing from you !! 🥰
hard to tell you what to do, but I’d return it if easy enough. if it otherwise works great for your hair I wouldn’t say don’t use it, I just would recommend taking a look at the ingredients and not continuing to use it in the future if it contains something potentially harmful or toxic. best of luck with whatever you choose! Some of their products are fine, just takes looking into
@@islandgirl8067 gotcha. One of the chemists I keep in touch with formulates products for Keracare. I’d never heard of them before him. I’m glad you found products that work for you!! I’m not a fan of TGIN but I’ve only ever tried their cowash

@@1922mistyblue Good catch, yea I added Camille Rose to my website back in December when I first launched and don’t think I was as against PEGs at the time. I do have the option to exclude both PEGs and Polysorbates on my website so you can also check there to confirm 😉 Thanks Julie!!
i get a lot of questions about As I am as well.. I thin because they are a popular brand and have been for years. I used them years ago don't remember having a bad experience but not enough to buy them again
Yea even before I cared about any of this stuff I was never really enticed by As I am even though it was so widely talked about. Yea, other than one comment below I hadn’t heard anyone saying they actively “disliked” this brand, but it’s more just a matter of how they’re delivering the goodness. How about along with some other goodness! Haha
I noticed a few years ago that some of As I Am earlier lines had urea in its ingredients and stayed away from the brand for the most part since then. There are some products in the brand I thought would be ok to use but to work that hard to make sure the ingredients are safe...is it worth it?
Exactly! The way I see it, i don’t want to know I have to check the products before buying. I want to go a brand and know i can choose anything I darned well want!! I’m at least glad they got rid of the urea but they could have stood to go a bit further.
Thank you Jas, and so great to hear from you! yea I was really annoyed about the ingredients in there, I feel like they could get the same affects with different foundation ingredients 🤷🏽♀️. it’s only across a few of their products and i know so many love their stuff! hoping one of these days they make a change

@@UptightCurlsbyAmanda i have a whole collection of As I Am a few months back I wanted to start using black owned products and since switched over to Camille Rose products, I’m now looking into skincare that’s black owned it’s amazes me how how a lot of products I thought were black owned are not
@@latasiatatum5996 yes! I had assumed As I am was black owned, but I don't think they ever really enticed me so I never looked into it. I got into this whole ingredients kick pretty early on so I've just been shopping the smaller brands for a while now. It's amazing how many of them exist and how many have been existing under the radar for so long. and they're so much better than what is out there in drug stores. Camille Rose was good for me when I reviewed at the beginning of my series but there was literally NO hold. My favorite brands right now are earthborn organics, Beau Pee, and Chebe USA. I have an offer codes for earthborn and Chebe if you want either of them. Camille Rose is so expensive and there are less expensive and arguably better options. I'd love to know if you try any of these! And if you're on facebook, you should join my new group. we talk a lot about products in there and it's a great conversation on all these topics :) Uptight Curls Community Forum: facebook.com/groups/762585544416984 Thank you for your feedback!
@@UptightCurlsbyAmanda yes super expensive but I’m able to get them on the ground I’m just so skeptical about products online that doesn’t offer a return policy and I don’t like the product
That is the crazy thing about a lot of products. They’ll remove all the carcinogens and toxins and call it a childcare line. Maybe remove it from everything, no?
WOW!!! 6 reasons is more than enough for me to stop buying their products. Scientists were attributed for helping with the AS I AM formulations😨😨😨😨😨. Thanks Amanda for being so informative 🤗🤗🤗🤗🤗
I get the impression that all these formulations and chemists are really there to just determine what mix of ingredients will work together to get the desired effect, but unless something is explicitly banned, they are not making decisions based on potentially health concerns. So some of these products may work amazingly well! But my whole point of this video is that there are so many other products that work amazingly well, but without the ingredients that are “questionable” at a minimum, and outright dangerous at the maximum, even if it’s just for those who “may” be sensitive. If you are one of those people, it’s your whole life and not just a minor statistic to you!! I’m glad you found this video informative and I hope you’ll give some of these other brands a try, but yea, it’s a no for me for their products!!
Lol glad you know me so well 😂. If it weren’t for UA-cam I’d probably be using everything they sell in CVS and Harmons and absolutely nothing more. Glad things worked out the way I did. Maybe if they remove this stuff I’ll try them one day but I’m definitely not enticed.
Hey Amanda! Wowww!!!🙁🙁 Damn Girl! I didn’t know As I am was really rolling like that! I’ve tried HH cowash, but sometimes they’re a hit or miss (no disrespect)! And, if I want to do something really quick, and not spend and exorbitant amount of money for an 8oz bottle or tub, not diy, As I am was it! But it sounds like it’s not it!😩😂 Now, what’s your recommendation for a good, quick cowash? 🤔 I might have to buy a few tubs for the summer!😂😂
Lol yea I have the pea and spirulina HH co-wash. I’m so so on it. Nothing to write home about. It was good the first couple times but it either spoiled or just stopped being great haha. I’m not much of a co-washer so I haven’t tried too many. Hard to definitively recommend because I haven’t tried it, but I would still go ahead and recommend the chebeUSA co-wash. I loved all of their products so far, and I know others who have loved them as well. Their ambunu deep conditioner is a new favorite and they just recently removed Germall from ALL of their products (like to think i had a little to do with that decision 😜). So I’m a big supporter of the brand for making that move. Plus you can get 15% off so may be worth even just a try. (UPTIGHTCURLS15) You should join my facebook group :) I’ll see if anyone there can recommend a product. Here’s the link below though :) facebook.com/groups/762585544416984
Thank you Michelle :) I appreciate it, and I love it when other people care, we really should!! There are so many other options at the same exact price point so why risk it??
Tbh I like their leave in and castor oil spray but tbh the name “As I am” bothers me because I am on the spiritual side. I don’t like certain energies but I will check out your playlist of better brands. Thank you🫶🏽🫶🏽
By she you mean me? Thank you for the comment. Nowhere did I say EVERY ONE OF HER PRODUCTS contain potentially harmful ingredients. I’m glad you have one that’s fine and I’m sure there are others.
Apologies!!
@@UptightCurlsbyAmanda Its ok. Would you recommend curlsmith I heard their products are good
What hair care lines do you recommend? I’m trying to find one and stick with it but it’s hard to find one with safe ingredients.
My favorites are curls dynasty, Beau peep luxuries, and earthborn organics, but you can check out my website for clean products 😎 on the “brands & deals” page. Also sharing my review playlist, I ONLY review clean brands so many to check out!

@@UptightCurlsbyAmanda okay, thank you so much
@@lovee1587 oh right, website is uptightcurls.com. Hope some of this helps!
I've tried that As I Am cowash that everyone loves, and I just can't! My hair hated it! I'm excited to try that ChebeUSA cowash one day!
I thought the slip was subpar.
@@1922mistyblue for which one?
@@ashleykirby3227 the As I Am cowash
@@1922mistyblue see I didnt, which is weird I hear. It dried my hair out so much so I used it on my wig🤣

So upset just bought a spray for me, wasted some money. Should I use it anyway?
hard to tell you what to do, but I’d return it if easy enough. if it otherwise works great for your hair I wouldn’t say don’t use it, I just would recommend taking a look at the ingredients and not continuing to use it in the future if it contains something potentially harmful or toxic. best of luck with whatever you choose! Some of their products are fine, just takes looking into
I tried As I Am products & hated them. They dried out my hair and left flakes. I took them right back to the store.
Seems to be a common theme in the comments, they don’t seem to work for a ton of people. Have you found another brand you particularly like?
@@UptightCurlsbyAmanda I've been using Keracare products for years & love them. I also like some of TGIN's products. ORS is an old staple.
@@islandgirl8067 gotcha. One of the chemists I keep in touch with formulates products for Keracare. I’d never heard of them before him. I’m glad you found products that work for you!! I’m not a fan of TGIN but I’ve only ever tried their cowash
Excellent video! I had a lone jar of As I Am Coil Defining Jelly which I got from a Swap Product Party... into the TRASH that went after watching your video! Thanks for posting this!!!
Lol wow that’s commitment!! 😆 I remember you talking about those swap product parties where you live, I was so jealous!! When the world opens up I’ll have to see if they have any of those in New York 🤔
Can you please do a video on safe natural hair products? Is Camille Rose safe?
Yes! Camille Rose is great, but I’ll share my black owned brands playlist, I only review safe products 😎
ua-cam.com/play/PL7XRkNSlCiKZeUpDKak6nMglCRyWlD5-s.html
This is also precisely the point of my product finder :). I’m continuing to build it out, there is so much more to add! But check out UptightCurlsbyAmanda.com to search natural hair products by ingredients, or just go to the Brand and Deals page for a list of safe Haircare brands
Camille Rose does use PEGs and Polysorbate. I think you can search the chemical name on the website and the individual products will appear.
@@1922mistyblue Good catch, yea I added Camille Rose to my website back in December when I first launched and don’t think I was as against PEGs at the time. I do have the option to exclude both PEGs and Polysorbates on my website so you can also check there to confirm 😉
Thanks Julie!!
@@UptightCurlsbyAmanda we’re learning so much together 😎
i get a lot of questions about As I am as well..
Haha
Wow thanks so much! My hair does not like As I am products! This might be the reason!
Your hair sounds smart!! Haha 🤓
I am so glad I found you!
This is exactly why I've never used this line.
I can’t use them it made my hair dry and feel so weird like sand paper I had to wash immediately
I finally found something that eliminated my dandruff. What do I do now lol?
You are so educated about ingredients!!! I love it! I like As I Am products but i found this video very informative and well put together!!
Thank you Jas, and so great to hear from you! yea I was really annoyed about the ingredients in there, I feel like they could get the same affects with different foundation ingredients 🤷🏽♀️. it’s only across a few of their products and i know so many love their stuff! hoping one of these days they make a change
Thanks for this video Amanda! I'm a new subscriber. Could you make a video talking about safe products/ brands for curly hair. I think many who don't know how to read ingredients would appreciate that.
Hi, and thank you for subscribing! I have a ton of resources, the content you requested is fortunately probably like 95% of what I'm sharing these days. Linking my website, my products review series (I ONLY review safe brands), and my ingredients review playlist below. I hope these help!

Very informative, I’m not going line @ 1:50-2:05 mark I had to stop, rewind, slow it down, and google lol....great video
Lol sorry about that 😂 I was just spouting off ingredients I like seeing in products! I mentioned the following -
brahmi, fenugreek, kokum butter, camellia oil, plantain leaves, ambunu leaves, carbomer 980, caprylhydroxamic acid, cocomidopropyl Betaine
They’re all explained on my website, UptightCurls.com if you’d like to check that out haha. Thank you for the feedback, I’m glad you found it useful!

@@UptightCurlsbyAmanda yes super expensive but I’m able to get them on the ground I’m just so skeptical about products online that doesn’t offer a return policy and I don’t like the product
They dont seem to have these ingredients in their baby hair care line .
That is the crazy thing about a lot of products. They’ll remove all the carcinogens and toxins and call it a childcare line. Maybe remove it from everything, no?
Interesting. I think I’m going to back Blue Magic.
Not familiar with the brand but I thought they just did edge control haha guess I was wrong!
I knew you wouldn’t review As I Am lol I used them when I first went natural but I wouldn’t buy it again today.
(UPTIGHTCURLS15)

Thank you Michelle :) I appreciate it, and I love it when other people care, we really should!! There are so many other options at the same exact price point so why risk it??
can u do a review of ecoslay :)
Tbh I like their leave in and castor oil spray but tbh the name “As I am” bothers me because I am on the spiritual side. I don’t like certain energies but I will check out your playlist of better brands. Thank you🫶🏽🫶🏽
Thank you so much for this information
The product the curling creme as I am has no harmful ingredients she should have done her research on all before making this video
By she you mean me? Thank you for the comment. Nowhere did I say EVERY ONE OF HER PRODUCTS contain potentially harmful ingredients. I’m glad you have one that’s fine and I’m sure there are others. I personally don’t want to have scour ingredient lists to confirm if something “okay”, I’d rather just purchase from a brand where literally everything product is a go.
Then what can I use? That’s not gonna hurt my hair and body?
Tons of recommendations, check out my bob123 playlist. There are tons of other options. Body, I’m still working on that haha
You are so smart. I would buy anything you try to sell me😂
Haha well thank you, wish I had something to sell 😂

Aw thank you 😊 haha just trying to bring some information to the surface!!
Thanks for the video! As I Am products leave my hair full of build up and gunk but also if it matters to anyone they are NOT a black owned brand.
