Getting Around Mannheim, Germany

  • Hello Hoppers! Mannheim is known as the Quadratestadt, or City of Squares, for its grid-like design. The city center has no street names and each block is assigned only letters and numbers so if you don't know how the grid works it can get quite confusing. I explain how to get around in Mannheim and how to locate 5 landmarks that are a good start if you are unfamiliar with the city and let's say you want to meet a friend.

    You make me want to cry, MuchoHop. I was stationed at Coleman Barracks (Sandhofen) soooo long ago (78-80) when I was 18-20. I lived in Nuremberg as a child, when my father was in the service, but I really loved it when I was stationed in Germany, myself. I still look back at the pictures I took at Coleman and "downtown" Mannheim.

    If you visit Mannheim, don't forget to go to Luisenpark where the biggest colony of starks (Störche in german) in a german industrial town is living, it counts more than one hundred individuals, some even stay in winter. Greetings from Mannheim-Rheinau

    Nicely done! Absolutely love your video! Mannheim is my home town and I love it! By the way: yes the palace is actually the second largest in Europe after Versailles. Some little trivia here: it's only slightly smaller but was built with one window more than Versailles !!! ;-)

      MuchoHop It's my first time to Germany. Do you think it is easy to buy basic necessities in Mannheim? Any recommendation for me to buy stuff like hair dryer, shampoo etc.? :D

    • @MuchoHop
      @MuchoHop  9 років тому

      Sum Doris OMG, Mannheim is shopping heaven! There are so many places to shop. For beauty and health (shampoo, etc) there is Rossman, DM, Douglas, and more. For clothes, you have all the international brands like H&M, Zara, etc. There are a few department stores Galeria Kaufhof, Engelhorn (more expensive) but many many more shops, especially along The Planken (I talk about it in the video) and the two streets parallel to this one (the street before and the street after). You'll have no problem. For food, there is a fresh food farmer's market every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at Marktplatz and you'll also find there a Lidl if you prefer that. OMG, just walk around and you'll discover lots of wonderful shops! Happy Shopping!!

    • @MuchoHop
      @MuchoHop  3 роки тому +1

      If you want to put a Mannheim address into your GPS, you put the block and the number of the house. So for example, the Hotel Radisson is Q7 27, Mannheim, Germany. You can look up Mannheim addresses in Google to see more. There is an address of U2, like the music group. Very interesting.

    Mannheim has been entirely destroyed by the war, there aren't any true old historical buildings anymore, just like the faith of many german cities, and what shocked me the most in mannheim is that it's flooded with immigrants of the 3rd world, I heard mostly arabic language than german, I felt sad.

    • @MuchoHop
      @MuchoHop  9 років тому +1

      svwtsvfcb you are right. Mannheim was heavily bombed because it has two major rivers passing through it, so they wanted to block transport from this important city. Like many large cities in Europe, there are groups of immigrants, looking for work or a better life. And these groups bring in their customs, food, and language. I was raised in NYC so I actually like to learn from different cultures. Sorry you felt sad. Mannheim, as does Berlin, has a very large community of people from Turkey so the language you probably heard was Turkish. Thanks for watching my videos! xxx

    • @svwtsvfcb
      @svwtsvfcb 9 років тому +2

      MuchoHop Agreed, however you should know the difference between America (US) and Germany: The united states are by definition an immigration country, indeed the native americans are the indians, the rest come originally from Europe, southern america, mexico, africa, asia and the middle east. Germany on the other hand, as all european countries, was never meant to be such a country. What I am trying to say is that America doesn't really have an american tradition, it's a mix of all traditions coming from somewhere else! Germany has its own traditions but I felt sad because I see it more and more disappearing because each year, Germany has to accept 500 000 immigrants a year, which in a moral stand point is good but many of these people do not really respect the German lifestyle, at least that's what I experienced in Mannheim and Berlin.

    • @MuchoHop
      @MuchoHop  9 років тому

      500,000 immigrants a year is alot of people! I agree that if a country opens its doors to you, you should show respect for its customs, but that is not always going to happen nor is it an obligation. Thanks for commenting and watching!

      svwtsvfcb I live in a building that was built in 1901 here in Mannheim. There is still a lot of old original building but they are stranded by the more newer ones. But you do see them. Remember the church / Rathouse or Government building by the marker. Well that is one of the old buildings.
