The contrast is so much easier to see when you show it with the black and white color pencils. Thank you.
That's why I use toned sketchbooks. Grey and tan are my favs. A pencil and a white charcoal pencil and you're good to go. Helps when practicing reflective objects as well.
"Draw people out in the wild."
*A feral man has been spotted parading the streets. Here's a photo of him taken by one of the frightened tourists he approached. If anyone has any information of this man, please contact your local authorities.*
Lol, this is my internal fear drawing people in public. And forget drawing kids the mom's go after you. (I draw and run)
It's like a police sketch but they're only focused on drawing the clothing folds
POV: You forgot the plastic
@@peco3474 you don't understand
if i did something like that i'd just die on the spot
Thank you, that tip with imagining it as cloths hanging from a nail or something Was really helpful 😁
Nice!! I’ve been struggling trying to dry folds and realistic clothing!
I personally learnt by observing and sketching the clothes of statues to start, since my mind understands sharp and solid shapes better, then I moved on to draping small kerchiefs on action figures and drawing that
awesome technique! i might try this out when i have time. thank you for sharing!!
the last sentence was really encouraging, thank you:)
"draw people in the wild" - this man gets it
I used to draw just incessantly as a kid, but it's been so long and I've gotten so rusty. Thank you for these videos- I want to learn again, and you have such good ideas.
You’ve become one of my favorite artists! You inspire me to try more. I’ve always loved drawing but I’m a perfectionist to a fault. And never happy with what I do. But you give me inspiration and confidence to try more. I’m 36 and finally started painting and drawing again since my teen years. Thank you! ❤️
I'm not going to lie, hearing someone say "you'll get it, I promise" is weirdly very encouraging. Thank you, I'm excited to learn more about cloth now
"...but just keep drawing and you'll get it. I promise." Is the most reassuring artist advice I've ever heard. Everyone always says "Practice makes perfect!" but what this guy said and the way he said it eases my nerves about drawing.
I want to “like” this multiple times, so here I am liking it with words.
I've been binging you for a while and you've been such a big help on my journey to being an artist!
Like this guy is so talented I could see him tracing and be amazed with his art.
As a costume designer who loves costumes that are beautifully draped this is really helpful. We're always learning.
I am not an artist but I like watching your „how to“ content, it makes me appreciate art even more.
Watching you videos always makes me smile :) your positivity reminds me that my art doesn’t need to be perfect but if I wanted too I could improve! I didn’t even m is about this artist before this video and it made me so happy listening to you! Sincerely, one of you loyal fans ^^
Thanks Scott for another great video! I've been watching each of your tutorials and practicing myself. I think another great tip for this is to use references and practice with them
I am INLOVE with the artist's art style!
Thank you! For ur positive energy, art tips and more! Your vids always make me feel better!
“Just keep trying you’ll get it” your going to make me cry😭
I legit never thought about drawing in this much detail and drew “princess dresses” but yknw what hmmmm 🤔
I always start by drawing it flat, then drawing in different triangles, later drawing the cloth around the edges and softening the corners. Knowing where the light is coming in is extremely helpful
I love how old fashioned your tracing is. When I study my favorites, I load screenshots into krita and go to town on another layer.
I love how passionate you sound. Not many people have that any more.
I came across this while putting off drawing the clothes on a character I’m working on.
The timing couldn’t have been more perfect👌
Leyendecker!!! My favorite artist ever 😭 the way he paint folds and everything in general is so crisp. I can stare at his art for days. I'm such a simp for his paintings
I've always had a little trouble on drawing clothes but this allows me to understand how clothing tension works.
Leyendecker was absolutely incredible, I love his work so much!
Hey could you recommend me the best pencils for sketching please? I love your content and art!!
Any number 2 pencil is great for drawing/sketching.
I use a 4H so that I can erase it easily.
I recommend 2b pencils. I think they look softer and they are easier to erase. They are my favorite.
Any pencil set that has HB, 2B, 4B, 2H, 4H, 6H, and etc.
You need a variety of pencils. And a kneaded eraser.
@@cybergalacticnova wait, you need more than 2 pencils and a crappy pen? Dang... Must have been working wrong all my life
@@mikotheraskum2014
Nah you're not working wrong. :)
Just that different pencils have different qualities. Higher the B, the softer it is and more darker (so it allows easy blending) and the higher the H, the harder and lighter it is (great for details).
They're often $11 to $20 USD for a simple set.
I’ve been struggling a bit with my art and was really losing steam but your channel is the best! I’m getting my groove back and enjoying myself again and I’ve been coming to terms more with how my art will need time to grow and it doesn’t matter how long that is, as long as I have fun and keep practicing :)

Across the hallway at the mall-
"Hey, what's that guy doing behind that bush?"
"I dunno, let's ask him. Hey you over there! Whatcha doin' man?"
The artist pops out and runs away screaming, shedding pages along the way.
"Oops..." A rustle of paper. "Whoever it was is pretty good. The sketch is a dead ringer for you."
"No kidding! Hey, wait a sec... I recognize this tag."
"Oh? Who is it?"
"My cousin. I follow him on Instagram. He's actually got some really cool stuff on there; you should check it out. I'll swing by tomorrow and give him the papers he dropped."
"Dude, how did you not recognize it was your cousin back there?"
"Well for one, the only time I really see his face is when his name is called and he looks up from his book with a deer-in-the-headlights look."
"Fair enough..."
i used to hate drawing creases in clothes but what helped me understand is how the lines usually come out from a singular point/section 😗
(also learning where the highlights and shadows are and how the material of the cloth can interacts with light helps me visualize how it looks! 😩)
"Hang that cloth from that point"
Yeahno, you lost me there.
Just looking at the folds made me so euphoric. It's just brimming with perfection and technique. I love the way the fabric breathes life and personality into the picture. Truly the masters
"Draw people out in the wild"
I know, I know, I should visit my neighbors more
Whenever i come across your videos, they always inspire me to do art. You make me want to go out there and create. You are the push that always help me overcome my insecurities. Thank you!
I can't really "imagine" where the folds are so it's kinda hard lol
LOOK AT A DRESS AND IMAGINE WHERE ITS GONNA FOLD AND END find the creases and end points of a skirt and slowly get inspired from it and go nuts
There will be creases where the skin stretches
And there will be creases where the clothes get stretched. If the clothes are short and not stretching, then they wont have alot of creases if they are strecting, like if u have seen a cropped top on a girl, it will look like that. If the clothes are longer and not stretching and hanging by the hip, they will look a little bungy
It seems like having a reference while you practice (whether a picture or an actual piece of draped cloth) would be helpful for a while. After you get the hang of how the shapes and folds work, you’ll probably be able to draw it from memory and have an easier time improvising.
Nah I'm happy with my stickman art collection
This is the second ever video of yours I've seen and I'd subscribed immediately after the first one. You're so encouraging and concise without being condescending or making it seem more complex then it needs to be
"just imagine it" *blank mind *
Same. My brain isn't good at spatial stuff. Objects and images and all that.
yeah, I imagine this is different for people who can’t visualize things (which is an actual thing, full incapability to mentally visualize something)
No way, JC Leyendecker is literally one of my two favorite artists! I’m so glad to hear he’s one of your favorites too!!
I'm so thankful that I came across your videos. I haven't been inspired to draw in a few years, but your videos are starting to give me my spark back. Thank you!
*"This man can paint folds."*
Well, this man can, too.
You are teaching me more than i ever learned in any of my art classes in school but then again my school system didn't value art and what they had to teach me couldn't be taught in a 45 minute class for 3 months because they had a lot to teach us. Thank you for your work and amazing artistic abilities.
"Everything you needed to know about folds"
Me : ok ,lead the way .
Him : draw a sqar-
Me : aight ,imma just-
I love Leyendecker's work so much! I love studying drapes and poses in general through his work!
I love that point idea, it simplifies everything and makes for a good easy study that’s not super time consuming, definitely recommending this video to anyone who wants to work on drawing clothing folds
This is how my drawing professor taught us to draw folds and drapery when I was in school. Points of tension are integral to making believable representations of any sort of cloth. I remember being amazed at how clothes suddenly started making more sense and looking correct when I drew them. Very useful!
Your passion is in your voice. Equally as important as accurate information and correct technique one must speak well and you are enchanting.
Hearing you give art tips and being so nice and being confident in our abilities is so nice. Thank you for making these :)
You have such a caring attitude in your video. That's lovely!!! Thank you for your content!
Man this artist you're studying in this video must've been a gem of humanity.
Like these are the prettiest drawings I've ever seen.
Drawing folds used to be daunting but after getting a start on it, I realized that it could be fun. And yet even if I understood the basics, I couldn't grasp how they should begin, so I appreciate this tip a lot.
God I love this guy! He's always so positive in his videos! It honestly makes me wanna keep drawing and practice more
You're the *best* teacher I ever seen, I'm so unmotivated but seeing you draw and giving tips and ideas helps me a lot, thank you man, keep up the awesome work, love from Brazil ❤️
I've seen a lot of tutorials before, but this one is the easiest technique to do when having trouble with folds and shadows. Thank youu.
I think I just found my online art teacher!
Really, sir your drawing hacks really help me improve a lot!
OUT IN THE WILD!!! If I had been drinking anything at the time, I would have done a spittake at the sudden, vivid imagery of a human safari!
Love your art and the way you present your videos! Thanks for sharing, take care! 🌻

Thanks for making this so easy. I have ALWAYS had problems with folds, and body postures and pretty much everything. My doodles are just lines and overdrawn stiff bodies without any tilt or normal posture. Apparently you learn this all when you're 11 and not 24. Thanks for teaching the basics.
Your videos really gives me the motivation to try and practice drawing again
thank you I forgot how good it feels when I finish a drawing
That last part almost made me cry you’re so encouraging
Straight to the point. This is a good one!
I'd like to add to this!
When I was learning, I used a washcloth or handkerchief to start, I found it really helpful.
Lay it flat on a table, hold one spot in place, and slowly push the other corners "down" away from the hold point. Holding from an edge or corner has different effects.
Track the corners as you push them. Once you have an idea where each corner goes, it's easier to fill in the edges.
If you hold towards the middle, it'll bunch up above the hold point as well.
Then once you have that nailed down, upgrading to rounded cuts of cloth. Making mental (or physical if you have a scrap to study) dots at opposite sides can act like a "corner" to track.
*Note: using strong lighting can make the folds more clear to see, so a desk lamp at a low angle is a simple and good tool when studying!
I don’t draw (my sister does, though, and I love sending her stuff like this) but I really, really enjoy watching people talk about what they love. And I can tell just from watching this that you love what you do.
I know a lot of English but but sometimes is hard to listen what people are saying but reading subtitles makes it easier
Thank you so much! ❤️
I just started painting (and drawing, I'm really bad at both) and enjoying it! What I paint rarely turns out beautiful but I don't care, the hour I spend on it is always so relaxing and fun at the same time. Watching your videos is really inspiring, I don't feel like a failure anymore. I'm just like "yeah, that's quite bad. But I did it!" haha. You're really an awesome teacher and painter, wish you all the best!
I haven’t been sketching or drawing in a while and honestly watching these videos make me want to start back up again and keep getting better❤️❤️❤️❤️
AHH THE MUSIC IS GIVING UA-cam 2018 VIBES AND I'M LIVING FOR ITT 😭
I just wanna say thank you for your content. I’m trying to better my art work and become a tattoo artist and you have such helpful tips delivered in a nice, fun, easy to understand way. content like yours helps aspiring artists everywhere 💖
I LOVED THIS. Explained in detail and to the point
What the, a random gem video that I stumbled on. Drawing fabric is the most intimidating thing for me. Thanks for the short but helpful video!
Whenever I get self conscious of my own writing, I watch these videos and I feel better about it
You are literally an art angel.... I was actually struggling with this yesterday...
Thank you as a young artist you helped me draw skirts and dresses 😁
I actually really appreciate this, I may not draw in a realistic style often but even when I’m drawing more unrealistically folding of clothes are a pain for me! Didn’t even realise point of tensions are where folds happen!
When I took art classes, I was done with the piece I was working on and asked my teacher what to do next. She took a tissue, crumpled it up, and said "draw this"
11/10 exercise highly recommend 👌
Its really fascinating that drawing made you learn about a lot of things in depth. Like learning about how clothes folds, you need to know what type of fabric it is and how the fabric is sewn. Or if you wanna draw forest in specific area, you need to learn the ecosystem of that area you can't just draw any trees or animals there.
You are the only reason I can get over art block recently
You have helped me get better. Probably my favourite artist
This is unrelated to your video, which is helpful to me as an artist but-
You seem like such a nice person by your voice, it’s so relaxing hearing you talk and you just seem so positive and nice
And tracing is great practice too! Spending free time tracing anatomy and clothes in magazines or on your tablet is one of the best ways to get a feel for what's right. Not to claim as your own, obviously, but I used to do that for hours when I was younger and it's a lot easier to eyeball proportions now :)
Clothing is the main thing I have trouble drawing, this was extremely helpful!!
The sculpture "The Ecstacy of St. Theresa" is one of my favorite pieces of showing amazing depiction of fabric movement. I know that's not what the piece is known for, but that's one of the aspects I can spend a long time studying.
OMG YOUR A LIFE SAVER!!! I NEED THIS!!! I'm a traditional artist too, so thank you!
How did you know I was procrastinating drawing folds! I will save this video to play it again when I go and tackle it finally. I'll definitely need more references but this is incredibly helpful thank you
Wow! I've been struggling forever with folds, this really helps out! Thank you!
First of all this is really helpful
And second of all that message at the end was so encouraging and sweet thank you!
Cloth is one of my favorite things to draw, but I’ve been going through an art block and I have been enjoying fabric as well as I used to. Thank you so much for this video, I’ll practice immediately! I also need to remind myself that it’s ok to use references… 😅
As a fashion major I do a lot of design drawings and portraits of people or both at the same time and I’m mostly self taught over the years but tips and tricks here and there certainly are very welcome and helpful, thanks
when drawing puffy clothes, keep in mind that there's volume. don't start with a full figure sketch unless you can already visualize where the clothes will create thickness, change range of motion, and so on. Keep your sketch loose and refine from there, including both a layer of figure and cloth
I love JC Leyendecker’s art! Now that I’m thinking about it, one of the first things I noticed about his works was the clothes (and maybe the muted colors, it just looks like art is dusted with fine beige parchment paper and I like that for some reason).
Also when I get to working the intricacies of clothing in my art - the folds, the embroidery, even the seaming - I get into it, and it’s so much fun.
Thank you so much for the advice with points! I didn't know where to start with the drapes and they have always looked unrealistic in all my attemps at drawing. Now I'll do better 😊
Thank you for featuring this artist! I now have a new favorite artist! JC Leyendecker totally feels like Norman Rockwell and baroque (?) mixed together.
This is INCREDIBLY HELPFUL
Scott you are a lifesaver I have been struggling with this for a long time
This might be the first thing I've seen in a very long time that makes me want to pick up drawing again
These videos have actually been motivating me to draw again after years🥺 Thank you for your passion and sharing your advice!!
