  • Built in the 1930s as the corporate headquarters and production plant for Zenith Radio, the former Zenith #1 Plant in Chicago has fallen into disrepair. Over time, Zenith faced heavy overseas competition and eventually closed and sold this property in the 1990s. Since then, the largely vacant building has been the victim of numerous fires and countless acts of vandalism. Take a look from above at what remains of this once-thriving manufacturing facility.

My grandparents had a 25MC36, it came to our living room Christmas 65. I would go from a child sitting in front of if (watching Bozo the Clown with Granddaddy) to the late teen replacing the picture tube for my grandmother, and in adulthood Electronic Engineer.
I never cease to be impressed with the build quality of the USA made Transoceaniacs. My electronics collection includes several.

Would be cool if the taggers actually did something worthwhile and refreshed the Zenith water tower instead.

It's interesting to see where the legendary Zenith Transoceanics and the famous "Walton's radio" were made. Interesting but sad to see what happened to a great company and all the people that were employed there.

So many good jobs gone. This area was a busy place at one time. There was a time when it was nearly unheard of to hear that someone was out of work. We had more jobs in Chicago than you could shake a stick at. The streets of Chicago were once paved in money. When the mob ran this city it was great. Now look at it.........hell, I still have a Zenith TV in my bedroom that I have been using every single night for the last 22 years.

I’m in UK - so sad to see this once noble groundbreaking business gone. We have several similar examples of our own. You will never persuade me that business globalisation helps workers in the long term. Here in the uk my latest acquisition a 1955 😮 2:56 Y600 Transoceanic - a quality radio

This place wasn’t abandoned.....everyone was forced out when the city stopped power to the building.....(without notice)....at the time there were many businesses active.....auto repair, manufacturing, food and clothing and even a small portion was used for band rehearsal spots.....one day the power went out and that was it.....everyone was forced to vacate. That was probably over ten years ago and still the place sits....falling apart and rotting away.
