So for aviation use, what sort of price are you looking at for a suitable micrometer? Also, what do you think of digital micrometers? It seems you can get them in the $75 to $100 price range...Would this sort of instrument be of adequate quality?

Hello Peter, you can use micrometers to measure material thickness, shims, etc. Digital ones are just as good, only a different way of displaying the readings. As long as it's a good name brand product, it doesn't matter if it's digital or mechanical.
Low budget ones I have found to be unreliable when compared to a calibrated standard.

I wish you would write the decimals down so you can add them up and we can see it.

You haven't explained what is the small handle drum for.

Good catch! It's a ratchet or clutch to limit how hard you tighten the thimble on the micrometer so you can get an accurate reading. You are actually supposed to turn the thimble using that small drum at the end until it ratchets and not the thimble itself. But I have a feeling you already knew that! Lol...

Jesus H, couldn't you find a quieter environment?

      That WAS the quiet environment.

Sounds like he's talking from inside an oxygen mask.
