not gonna lie when I listen to him im not tired of it no matter how many times i play it on repeat lols but like his music gives me literal CHILLS it makes me feel sooo fucking much!!!! Two ghosts or SOTT are such a great examples of how ethermal he is.. it makes me what to scream at how much i FEEL it.. his music it's something sooo ethereal the sentiment he puts in his music is just sooo beautiful and moving i think that completely separates him from other artist i can hear the sentiment on his voice yk?

I think Harry Styles mastered mainstream pop and it's going very well for him. Each era of Harry Styles is unique and is a world on it's own. He may not be my cup of tea, but I do like aesthetic in music videos or how the album cover will look like. Combining with One Direction and his solo career, I think he'll last for a while in pop music.

that's it. Not my cup either, but there's a lot to appreciate and respect.

His voice is very recognizable to me. He's got a tembre that goes well with so many drastically different genres but it's not because it's generic but because of he opposite. He uses different vocal techniques for diffrent genres as well and he sounds authentic in all of them. Check out Matilda, Girl Crush, Kiwi, Falling - they're all totally different but you can hear him in each song. Thank god him being a vocal show alum didn't brainwashed him enough to always be focused singing, he cares about whole package and that's why sometimes voice is secondary in his record. It's not the case live, trust me. To my personal observation he's got 3 octaves of working range and he's a hell of a belter, he belts notes not everyone can take falsetto. He's a great vocalist.

To be completely fair, it may be just that i need to familiarise myself with his voice more. Perhaps it's just me missing the nuances. I definitely knew that that "take" was...more of a reflection on me.

I was first drawn to Harry the performer when he was still in 1d, not knowing much about the band. I didn’t even expect him to become this big because, let’s be honest, 1d is no N’Sync or Backstreet Boys. But I love his voice and his stage persona, so I always look forward to hear his music and his improvement as an artist. He has yet to disappoint me. I think the best thing about Harry is, despite his shortcomings as a musician (he had never played any music instruments before coming to fame), his passion in music shines through his work. Without prejudice, you just know this man LOVES making music. People keep saying he makes commercial music. Tbh, his mega hit As It Was doesn’t even sound commercial to me. But there’s something about the song that makes people love it, maybe the nostalgia and bittersweetness.
Harry has said so many times he he just wanna make music he wanna listen to. It’s fortunate that his taste in music is pretty diverse, so he never sticks to any particular genre. The fact that he seems to have an old soul is also a plus for me who grew up listening to music in 80s-90s.

As a young girl and a big harry fan, I think it can confuse people when they see that the fandom we have for him often doesn't revolve around him as a person. It's because, as you said, his music speaks to your soul not your head. It always sounds fresh without going out of style. Him being a charismatic guy is just a bonus, really.

Appreciate this comment Nadine! Especially important as I am NOT his core audience. Yeah fandoms can be looked down upon, which is dumb...and naive.

Been a huge fan of Harry since the early 1D days and have have also recently become a huge fan of your work, Derrick. Never clicked so fast on a video before 😂
Your love and appreciation for music has re-sparked my curiosity for it and I’ve been attending a lot of live gigs as a result. Can’t thank you enough for the inspo and good vibes you’re putting out here ❤

I never thought about it that way, but I completely agree about Harry's music having a sound for longevity. I think I have to revisit Harry's House, I heard it and enjoyed some songs but apparently not enough to keep playing it. Fine Line to me was an album I didn't listen to until a year after its release but have enjoyed it so so much. When it comes to the outfits, the era where he channeled Mexican Singer-Songwriter Icon Juan Gabriel was fun to discover. Tbh I'm so glad the Discord happened, I've been listening to so much new music and the group of people ain't too bad either 😁.

I love Harry his music his voice and his visions. I became a fan during 1D. They really were a different kind of “boyband”. People don’t give them any chance because of that. Same with Harry because he was in a boyband. Harry has a unique voice I hear his voice out of a lot of otger voices. If I see him on stage I can’t stop smiling. My whole day is perfect then. I am very curious what he will do with his 4th album. People please give him a chance if you don’t know him!Watch a full live concert. And you will fall into a rabbithole. He is the total package. The XX++ factor

I like your take on this. I think the main reason why people don't like him is because he's pop and a white male. This is also the reason why people are downgrading his work in music/movies. I like Harry's song, and I believe he is one of the most genuine artist our there.

  • @OceanChild7

Harry had different setups of the stage, including in the round ones, he was still running around the catwalks and joking about people facing his face or bum from time to time lol I don't mind round stages, one of my all tim fave live shows is Secret World tour show from Peter Gabriel and it worked so well, at least it seems to me from the small laptop screen I saw it on 🤭
I'm sure no matter how much he's going to experiment in his next albums (and we just know he will), people will still think of his as a pop star. I think he's totally fine with this title and in a way it makes me appreciate and respect this genre more.
Having said that, have you heard the trigger song he wrote for the movie he was in, the Don't Worry Darling one? It's so creepy and sad and beautiful and quirky, the movie vibe in a nutshell. Check out "With You all the time", great stuff imo. I'm wondering if he will want to explore this music realm more in next years, I would love to hear a move score by him

Harry did write all of his songs, he usually only work with the same team. He won an Ivor Novello too and a mercury prize. He is the main responsable of a lot of decision in his music, people dont know because of the gender of music he does. But i would love to you to watch some interviews of him, like zane lowe when he talk about that.

Very interesting and well discussed video. I think you really picked up that Harry is very selective about what he puts out. If you haven’t done so, check out his 2 interviews with Zane Lowe. He talks about how he has worked out success means to him. I think Harry is a true musicphile. He listens to a wide range of music and has some definite influences but likes to take risks to do his own thing. He’s always been an old soul in a young body. It is incredible that he’s on top of the world and has had no collabs, no remixes. His fan base is really quite varied now. I am a huge fan at aged 44. My 10 year old daughter loves his music too. Not just his 3 radio hits, but loves all his albums. We had the absolute pleasure of seeing him recently in concert and my already high expectations were exceeded. He certainly will go down as a true great of this generation.
I disagree on his vocals, I think it is very distinctive. It has impressive and changed over time. He can sing in a higher register now.

People are used to entertainment aspect in the current pop, and they get so fussy with their demands that little to none of current music will be interesting to people in a few years. It's fast music of the fast world. And then there's Harry with his harmonies, melodic choices, his analg synths and so many beauiful instrumentations and layerings in one song that you are just reminded that music is art first of all, not just entertainment.
He's assigned to current pop music, his level of popularity doesn't allow to call him anything less than pop. Yet there's not much sound like his nowadays. His care to the detail and the musicality like his albums have are not rare per se, they're just rare in the top 100.
He made non-radio friendly debut record but people still want to losten to him, the magnitude of his fame is crazy, basically he could have made zero effort to make music and it would still be popuar and his stans would fight wih anyone saying it's the best thing ever. My point is, having all that he chose to make amazing effort, not folow any trends, make something he'd want to listen to and it just worked. Indeed, his music is timeles, universal, relatable and will definitely stand the test of time.

  • @TARAstarssss
    @TARAstarssss Рік тому

Absolutely agree on all your points supporting why Harry's music will stand the test of time!
Here's my respectful rebuttal to some of the criticisms
    - His fashion is heavily inspired by legends who came before him and he has maintained that he looks up to artists like Elton, Bowie and Mercury. I think fans call him a fashion icon because he's not only paying homage but bringing back the drama and theatrical element to fashion in a fun way. I see so many male celebrities taking risks with silhouettes, colours and patterns on red carpets now, so many teenage boys who are now comfortable with wearing pearl necklaces. That's impact right there
    - Harry has played in the round and he does it extremely well, his stage coverage has been lauded by many noted artists and reviewers. (Residencies at NY and LA were in the round)
    - "Queerbaiting" applies to media, real people cannot queerbait. He's just having fun with clothes and actively supporting his queer fans. This whole discourse is harmful to people who are unlabelled, questioning, bi/pan or simply wanting to be private.
    - He himself has never claimed to be an outstanding vocalist, but he does have a unique voice and works hard to deliver a soulful performance, both in the studio and live versions. Check out his Girl Crush and Hopelessly Devoted To You covers

appreciate the rebuttal Jui! All very interesting to read and think about.
I agree with the fashion influence. Silhouettes he's worn have definitely impacted many in mens fashion right now
Stage coverage - well fair, that's my ignorance!
Baiting - yeah def subjective takes those. I don't think he is, but yeah I did mention it innit
      Voice: I shall delve deeper!

No mention of his appreciation of Haruomi Hosono? Harry's House was a nod to Hosono House.

I think it's a misconception that Harry's fanbase is all 19 year old 1D fans. One direction started in 2011, that's 12 years ago now, so many of those fans are in their late 20s early 30s now. He also has a lot of fans that are older, his biggest fan that presented him the Grammy was a Grandma. It's very old fashioned to see teen girl fans as something that doesn't mean the music is great or timeless, when really that's the fanbase The Beatles had and that didn't mean either of those things. I agree that Harry's music will in time be something someone picks up and thinks is interesting in decades from now, but to say that right now he doesn't have that, and just a teen fanbase is a misconception and stereotyping the "19 year old fan girl" to not having musical taste that will last time
