Valvoline Max Life is the shit.. I use it in Honda's VW's Nissans, BMW's etc. Has NEVER failed me and often makes the shifting way smoother. Love that stuff.
Those ZF’s hate being low on fluid. Even by a very small amount. To properly fill/check the fluid, the fluid temp needs to be at 38 degrees C (checked via OBD, not a laser thermometer) Not doing this can lead to cold harsh shifts. I’ve owned 7 of these and they’ve all shifted way better by simply getting the level 100% correct.
Battery can kill them too. I hear him say jump pack and it makes me worried. I hooked up an extra battery in my trunk with jumper cables. Wish I had just changed the battery. Now I need a new tranny.
Good video. I purchased an '05 S-Type R back in 2018 for 2000 dollars, it was hurting when I bought it. Neglected and was a repo, and had about 180,000 miles. Misfiring and slipping transmission - new plugs/coils and new trans fluid fixed all the issues, and I drove that car for 2 years before selling to Carmax for a profit. I still miss the supercharger whine of that car, maybe I'll find an XJR someday for a good deal ;)
There are two reasons to undo the fill plug first. One is so that if it won't undo, you still have ATF in the box. The second is when you open the fill plug and then the drain plug, the fluid runs out faster. BTW loving the channel. From the UK
In addition, Ford's Mercon SP ATF also meets the spec for the 6HP26, as it was the fluid for the 6Rxx boxes that were built under ZF license. Advance usually carries it, or check a Ford dealer parts counter. That's been my go-to fluid on my '04 XJ. Also, if you have a scan tool that will allow it (or better the JLR SDD software), clear the trans adaptations.
And I would totally change those tired cooler lines before they decide to rupture besides that seems to be the only thing really wrong with the whole car totally worth changing them out!
@@WatchJRGo I normally enjoy doing suspension work I may never do another suspension component replacement ever again after this 😂 good to see the jaguar rolling down the road man!

I have an E90 with a ZF 6HP-19. I had a leak at first but eventually the transmission started getting jerky. I replaced the sealing sleeves, pan/filter, fluid, and solenoids and the car started driving smooth again.
Top Gear had a platform for discussions, that had a green leather rear car bench seat used as a couch. Instead of using folding chairs in your shop, you should have a metal frame made (on lockable wheels), made for a leather bench seat. You could add metal arm rests, with cup holders.
Painfully, it's done painfully. You honestly feel like you're going to damage the new lines trying to thread them in. My pro-tip is to keep the old leaky lines and have them rebuilt by a hydraulics shop so you have a spare set. Too damn expensive to have the crappy oem crimps. The supercharger whine on an XJR makes you forgive many sins though!
When I ran an Audi A5 with an auto box the car started to hesitate and snatch when moving off from a cold start. A mate told me to change the gearbox fluid. I did but she still snatched until I filled the box to the brim and that extra 200 cc made her feel new again!
Kinda makes me mad that the last shop that looked at this didn’t even bother to throw it on a lift and find that leak in 60 seconds. Not exactly a “deep dive” worthy of huge money. Feels like the previous owner got bent over on this one.

Park brake fault is definitely because of the battery. That electronic parking brake system DOES NOT like low voltage. They will do that, sometimes you have to recalibrate the parking brake too, to make it happy again.
i put maxlife in my hyundai and it started slipping, went back to hyundai brand fluid and it stopped slipping... i think they load the hyundai stuff with friction modifiers.
I got my '04 Vanden Plas from my grandfather who was the original owner (purchased when Ford owned Jaguar, my family worked for Ford so they got a sizable discount off the 75k sticker price)... Anyways he had been battling the "Gearbox Fault" code on the dash... He had the transmission rebuilt 2x by a transmission shop that still couldn't get rid of that fault. I will try checking the fluid level. When I am on the highway and punch it, on the downshift from 6-5 it makes a "supercharger" whine in the transmission and then stays in gear 3 or 4.... I am not sure if anyone has experienced this fault code, but that is what caused my grandfather to get the transmission rebuilt. If I baby it, there is nothing wrong... It shifts fine, and downshifts fine. Only when I punch it in 5 or 6 does it do the whining.
