Since, Trump knew about it, that was a conspiracy (with Donald Trump) to break campaign finance law. If he hadn't given MacDoogle money, he wouldn't have needed a non-prosecution agreement. Highlighting the agreement, makes Trump look more guilty since there isn't anything else that Pecker was potentially criminally liable for.

If I were a Juror, I wouldn't care about "the deal" if the evidence backs up the testimony.
If I was a Juror I would notice that the deal was to prevent prosecution for being in a conspiracy with Donald Trump. If Donald Trump wasn't guilty of conspiracy, David Pecker wouldn't need a non-prosecution deal.
Also the jury knows about Pecker's immunity deal, and that pecker would lose that deal if Pecker lies.
So the defence are ok with saying pecker is trying to stay out of jail for helping trump. So the guilty party is again trump.
Nothing like saying your client is guilty by accusing the co conspirator of making a sweet deal so they won't be prosecuted for the same crimes you are defending.

And the illegal means in this case include falsifications of business records, which become felonies due to the attempted election tampering.
If the defense is arguing that Pecker was just trying to save his own skin, that's an admission that there was criming going on, buddy.
