Breathing is a physical process but respiration is a chemical process in breathing inhalation and exhalation of Oxygen and carbon dioxide takes place respectively but in respiration oxidation of food takes place in cells making of glucose which is stored in the body in the form of glycogen 13:51

.. you are also right .. but on land animal required less energy to do any motion . But in water it was hard to do. For example..if you are doing any physical exercise . Then you breathe more fastly then normal . Because yout body need it To do physics exercise . Same for fishes they also required some oxygen to swim in water .
