  • The first in a series of music-videos from Bjarte Eike & Barokksolistene. The series, MYSTERIER, is devoted to exploring the mysteries of the Rosary, through the timeless, experimental and sublime music of Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber (1644-1704).
The texts we use have been translated and adapted from old psalter-books by Aslak Moe, then re-written and adjusted for this specific project by Bjarte Eike and Ross Kolby, who is also the narrator.

This is simply the best performance I have ever heard also true to the gebens-intention of the seventeenth c Austrian Franciscan parish where these notably in October performed pre during and post Rosary recitation sonatas were heard ... And then nevermore...See Katia Streich's U Toronto MS musicology thesis and recommended LP's and realization principle's

The Adagio in double stops at 4:30 is insane played like this : full power ! Looking at the faces of other musicians, it's just so good ! Such a good rendition, musicianship as its best, concept with the narrator so well integrated. The video editing is so good too. And what about the audio recording which is at the same level ?! Would have loved to see a recording of the whole sonatas in the same way !
    Bravo !
(if mister Thomas Vang see this message, one day, i would really appreciate if he can tell me what mics he uses to record the violin !)

      Hi Guillaume
Thanks so much for your comments 🙏
There are 3 more sonatas done in this way - mysterie 3, 6 and 10 (check out the number 10, crucifixion, filmed in an abandoned water tower in Copenhagen (and with my own compositions in front and after the sonata (on a hardanger fiddle…in that amazing room with 15 seconds reverb..)
Search “Mysterie No.10” bjarte Eike, and I’m sure you’ll find it
I use my own microphone, a Samar ribbon mic (VL37A) close by, and then a stereo pair of small diaphragm condensers at a distance)

@@bjarteeike2168 Thanks so much for your answer. I'vre already watched all you others Biber sonatas (The 1,3,6,10 are among my preferred ones too...and all in minor of course..). The whole set of sonatas would have been so great like this, but it is so much work ! I'll just enjoy those 4 ones as much as i can.
The Crucifixion is very well made, great job !
Thanks again; and by the way i love your traditional music records too, it's so fresh with period instruments, i'm so glad to have discovered your "ensemble" (don't know how it translate in english) ! :)
And thanks for the infos about microphone, i was a bit reticent to invest in ribbon mic due to prices, but it capture so well the violin it seems that it is really the way to go (i only use small diaphragm condensers, but it lacks a lot of things...). I'll wait to have a sufficient level (and the need to) to invest into such material...
