I live in Memphis and if you do want to go on a trip here, I would definitely recommend Shelby Farms and the lake and the playground and all of the trails there

I went to art school in Memphis, drove a limo for the Peabody, performed dance choreography, had too good a time. I'd been away from most of 20 years, and a lot of my friends warned me, "You were here during a GOLDEN AGE for Memphis, and that's gone." A few years ago I started taking one of my kids to Memphis Tigers football games, and taking him around town, introducing him to my old haunts. My friends were wrong: that Memphis that I knew way back when is still there in abundance. As we were leaving town after our first visit together, my kid asked me, "Daddy, does everyone in Memphis know you? They act like they do!" And I had to say, "Look, Memphis is the world's biggest small town. You show them love, you're gonna get love!" I miss Memphis.
I'm a born and raised Memphian. I enjoyed watching your video. You nailed the hot tourist attractions and great safety tips. I was surprised though that you left out St.Jude's hospital. There's so much history to be known about it and how it's a vital part our city.

It was a very fair review. It's not really that unsafe of a city as long as you use good judgment. If it looks dangerous, it probably is. If you feel like you don't belong, you probably don't. Respect yourself, where you are, and the people around you and you are pretty safe.

If so then what is " uptown " ? Or do I have it the other way round? We don't use this terminology in the UK.
went to Memphis several years back...went to Graceland LOVED IT, and Beale street fun and great eats...in my opinion if you want to go to Memphis...go with people, a group, rent a car and see the town, i was by myself and do not drive and i had a great time, wish i had seen that Civil Rights Museum...also in your group have someone who can read a map...lol..great piece..
Having lived in Memphis, the Civil Rights Museum, Central BBQ, Sun Studio, Beale St., and the Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid... everything else can be safely skipped.
I live in Memphis, love it and you can drink on any street the cops are really cool they really do there jobs you really have to be screwing up to go to jail best city ever
Everyone has their favorites so. I'm not sure the word 'shock' describes your video. I love the variety of food, ethnic grocers in Memphis. Ethiopian, Vietnamese, Indian, Cuban. Try Rumba Room, Abyssinia the next time you visit. TripAdvisor, Yelp can help you out there. Don't be afraid of hole in the wall places (MidEastern, Chinese, BBQ) on Summer. BTW Summer, thrift shops galore. There is a grocer on Park that has items you have to order on line or get in NY. Tourism is very important to Memphis and the residents, businesses know this. There are many here to visit the healthcare options. Many good music opportunities. There is a panhandling ordinance, know it before you come. If you know this they respond differently. Get to know the Blue Suede Brigade and enjoy many of the parks and art galleries. Go out over the Mississippi River. hiking, paddling or visit an old cemetery. Enjoy your visit. Only time I've been to Graceland was to take a visitor.
Went downtown for a concert back in 1988 and needed directions to North Hall. We were over a past where the Pyramid is now. Some very cool brothers gave us white boys exact directions.
I have toured every American city and never felt as UNSAFE as I did while spending an evening in Memphis around Beale Street. A place to avoid if I ever saw one. It was so bad that I am “shocked” you even mentioned it all all! But after all, how could you not? It is that bad....!!!!
Great overview of our town. There IS wet rib orders, but let them know when you order (I think dry only at Rendezvous, but I love Central & BBQ Shop). Gus is good, try Uncle Lou's! And Dino's on McLean for Italian. As with any city: stow it, don't show it. Fudge at Bass Pro is great.
I can’t wait to visit Although I’m a little bit concerned about the crime you are referring to. I want to visit the zoo and Graceland and Beale street and sample the ribs and i love slaw and sauce. So I guess best way to get around is rent car at airport so I can visit all my places on my list. Thanks for the video as it’s very informative.
Jeff Kennedy As a Memphis native and someone who currently lives downtown Memphis I can tell you that the crime is not as bad as people make it out to be. Most crime is consolidated to certain areas of the city and doesn’t really cross over. As long as you stay out of the bad areas you will be fine
Don't listen to these people. Lived there for over 30 years and not only does the crime move around a lot (the cops have statistical tools for tracking crime movement) but a lot of crime hits the places where money and goods are located. Memphis is small, the cops are dopes and criminals drive around looking for nice things to steal. Besides most of the city is a dump. More of it is going that way every year. I got robbed TWICE at gun point in Cooper Young, one of the "nice areas".
Tyler Durden Maybe I’m just the statistical anomaly then or you were just in the wrong place at the wrong time... while in college I lived in the cooper young area, we went out every weekend and stayed out super late and I don’t know a single person who ever had run in with crime. At another point I lived over by the Memphis country club, which is a rocks throw from Orange Mound, and nothing ever happened. We all drove nice vehicles and parked on the street and they were never broken in to. We came and went at all different times of the day and night for class and late night activities and didn’t get robbed once or even get close to any criminal activity. Now I live down town and I can say the same thing about it. I have never experienced or know anyone who has experienced this. The only crime I can think of is one of my friends had their computer stolen from the front seat of their car, which they deserved for leaving it there. Like I said, mine and many others Memphis experience is completely different
Memphis has a VERY HIGH CRIME RATE! It's been this way for a long time. It's nothing new. The people there ARE very nice. It has the best Bar-B-Q in the country.
Been there 5 times. 1st time in 87. Recently in 2018. Great clip. Good to know but nothing shocking. Panhandling is like an epidemic there. REALLY BAD! Especially around Beale. Impossible to walk a few blocks without someone asking you for money. Good food/music/people but be vigilant.
It really is a dump and all of these people trying to say it's somehow not are simply prisoners to the city. Anyone given a choice of living in Memphis or somewhere actually nice would never choose Memphis. And the city is only getting worse no matter how many crime, I mean bike trails they put down. Nuke the city. It's the only way to be sure.
Good video. Pretty honest. I lived 5 yrs in Memphis in the mid 90's, one of the greatest cities to live in in the country ... back then. I recently visited and was saddened to see how the town got ruined and was wondering if you'd mention things like beggars, crime, etc. In general, a nice place to visit once but probably not more than that and certainly not to live in.
CCW Noob, Yes he did mention beggers. Safety is a factor in any city in our USA, on the highway groc stores event areas but first they beg before they leave thier own neighborhood.Weather is a big issue rain and the rivers, play a part and climate change🔥the heat will take your breathe aways so will the cold weather. Memphis is my home i feel good when i go home. I left over yrs ago. Thinking of moving back. Very good video🚣♂️🏊♂️🏊🏽♂️🏌️♂️🚴♂️🚵♂️🎈👍🏾
Tourists PLEASE LISTEN Dont go anywhere outside of Beale street and mid town strip for your own safety. The best bar b que is NOT downtown And uber sucks here
Ok, so you drive all the way to Memphis to watch some ducks waddle a few feet. Then what? It's over. Watch it online and see if it's worth all the gas, air fare, time, money. It's cute. It lasts a few minutes. It's over. Graceland nor the Peabody ducks are worth the trip.
Great rundown. As a Memphis native, I only have 1 correction. We are not a dry rub barbecue city. We're ALL ABOUT THE SAUCE! We like a sweet sauce and we like coleslaw on EVERYTHING!!!
No we are not! I ONLY eat dry rub and I live in Memphis. Everyone else I know is also a dry rub only type of person. Also I like coleslaw but not on everything on the side.
Being a Memphis native. I would like to give a brief history of the city. The Founder of our great city named it Memphis because it reminded him of his many trips to Egypt. Like Memphis, Egypt which sits on the Nile River we sit on the Mighty Mississippi. Also, many people are unaware that Memphis was one of the cities used on the Underground Railroad for slaves seeking freedom to the North. There is another museum there called Slave Haven. I encourage you to add that one to your list while in Memphis.
Nice, but not smart...wish he had a Bible on hand to read about the issues that Memphis faced in the Old Testament. I’m African and names are very spiritual and they carry weight ... it’s unfortunate that Memphis is still a struggling city in 2020... I’ll drop one of scriptures you can research and see for yourself............... Ezekiel 30:16 Verse Concepts “I will set a fire in Egypt; Sin will writhe in anguish, Thebes will be breached And Memphis will have distresses daily.
There was this museum I visited in Memphis in an elementary school field trip I forgot what it was called but it definitely had something to do with slavery . We got to go underground to a piece of the Underground Railroad . They also had cotton .
Memphis native here, great review, never been to Graceland but did go down to it the day he died. Need to include Overton Square which is a great place for tourists at night, much safer but use the parking garage and better security in parking areas. Lafayette's is a historical music venue everyone should check out. Use UBER and be completely safe and legal. Thanks for making this! Honest and truthful!
Billy, Beale at is great, Fri and Sun nights are best, not so crowded. Get outta there by midnite go to midtown, Layefettes Music hall on Overton square or Cooper Young, both areas are safe late night and only a couple miles away.
Billy Ruben, last but not least, when you come to Beale at, go to Blues City Cafe!!!! Half of it is a restaurant, the other half a bar with stage. Go to the bar side, get a table, order a full rack of ribs, come hungry!! It's the BEST Ribs in Memphis!!! The band's there are also the BEST!!!! GREAT PLACE!!! I'm born and raised here, trust me on this one. If you come, hit me up here before you travel and I'll get the message and come buy you a beer!!! No funny shit, just neighbourly, that's how we roll!! @@oldgroucho2203 Yup. But look at how Memphis ranks statistically. It is the worst of the worst in the U.S., and there's no glossing over it with "well just in certain parts."
Being from NC, I was shocked to say..these are the best ribs I ever had!!! But I'm shocked how many people complain this place. My Aunt and I went for a long weekend to see Wicked at the Orpheum. Never felt un safe at all.
I live down town about a 5 minute walk from the Orpheus and I can say Memphis is not that bad... it is just certain areas that give Memphis a bad name. As long as you stay in the better areas of the city you have nothing to worry about.
catmodelt yeah it has changed a lot and within the last couple of years. I love living in the south bluff area. The downtown area has seen a lot of investment in the last couple years and the last time I checked I believe there was about15-20 billions dollars invested in new downtown projects and real estate. Give it another couple years and downtown Memphis will be worth twice as much as what’s it was.

went to Memphis several years back...went to Graceland LOVED IT, and Beale street fun and great eats...in my opinion if you want to go to Memphis...go with people, a group, rent a car and see the town, i was by myself and do not drive and i had a great time, wish i had seen that Civil Rights Museum...also in your group have someone who can read a map...lol..great piece..

Having lived in Memphis, the Civil Rights Museum, Central BBQ, Sun Studio, Beale St., and the Bass Pro Shops at the Pyramid... everything else can be safely skipped.
You didn't mention anything about the trolley because I am a trolley Operator and I meet all kind of people all over.
Counters all of the negativity I hear Daily.
Thank you! Your video is awesome! 😃
I live in Memphis, love it and you can drink on any street the cops are really cool they really do there jobs you really have to be screwing up to go to jail best city ever
You really got to try other places :)
The ducks 😂😂😂
Awesome zoo- Pink Palace Museum- Overton Square-Fed Ex Forum- amazing city!
Wiseacre awesome. As a Memphian i love the video
Memphis born and raised, moved to Arkansas 21 years ago. I would never move back to Memphis for any reason.
They don’t want you anyways, Jerry.
Leonard's Barbeque is the hands down absolute best BBQ anywhere!!! Check it out on Fox Pass Road.
Ooohh saw you went to Babalu when you were talking about hospitality. Love that place.
Central BBQ is the best...their macaroni and cheese is on another level!!!
iam coming memphis
I have toured every American city and never felt as UNSAFE as I did while spending an evening in Memphis around Beale Street. A place to avoid if I ever saw one. It was so bad that I am “shocked” you even mentioned it all all! But after all, how could you not? It is that bad....!!!!
Great overview of our town. There IS wet rib orders, but let them know when you order (I think dry only at Rendezvous, but I love Central & BBQ Shop). Gus is good, try Uncle Lou's! And Dino's on McLean for Italian. As with any city: stow it, don't show it. Fudge at Bass Pro is great.
a coupla things to add:
downtown is one of the safest parts of the whole city. locals dont go to graceland.
It's sad, I have relatives in Arkansas and Missourri but I've never visited Memphis:( Thanks for all the info!
Overton Square is always a favorite! Check out the new Memphian Hotel! Open in 2021.
You could buy a beautiful home or baby mansion in a nice neighborhood chicksaw gardens, central gardens, Kirby oaks
Yes Elvis prices are keeping me from going to visit I just cant see myself spending that for me & the family
First shock for me was GOATS ON ROOFTOPS ON BEALE STREET
Huey's burgers and onion rings!
Yes exactly!
Born and raised in Memphis..hugged EP as a kid.. best thing is to keep going 40 west or 55 north and south and miss that exit
Wow, are all the police officers that handsome on Beale St?????
Cooper Young area, hello.
My home 🥰
Memphis has a VERY HIGH CRIME RATE! It's been this way for a long time. It's nothing new. The people there ARE very nice. It has the best Bar-B-Q in the country.
You forgot about mud Island. It's my fav
I docked there
Born and raised in Memphis. It’s a dump. Left it as soon as I could.
CardsFan4 Memphis thanks you.
that man said get a burger at hoo-eys! we pronounce it hew-eees and its spelled Huey's
central is the best bbq hands down
memphis nice country
Where are you from? Is Memphis a long drive or flight?
I took a bus there from DC. It was worth the trip.
9:07 Definitely smh 😂😂
What’s the winters like in Memphis?
Winters are usually pretty mild but this last one got rough.
Best way to see downtown is to take a horse drawn carriage tour.
Tourists PLEASE LISTEN
Dont go anywhere outside of Beale street and mid town strip for your own safety.
The best bar b que is NOT downtown
And uber sucks here
Who named Memphis?
What native nation lived there?
How do you visit Memphis and not eat at Uncle Lou's?
Because you stay at your friends house and they cook for you a lot
Unless he has that "sweet spicy love" chicken I would suggest giving Uncle Lou's a visit.
I am a Memphian and local news said they will quit allowing drinks on the street 🤨🙄🎶🎶🎶they blamed it on cov19
Went to Memphis last year and although Beale street was quiet the entertainment was still great and to see Graceland was also an experience
Graceland is a true experience :)
Memphis natives have never been to Graceland.
Edit: Thanks to @Quarter life jam ... We haven't been without it being a field trip lol
Facts!!
im from memphis and ive only been outside on the sidewalk.
Fr
Not true. Memphis natives have been to Graceland ONCE during their elementary school field trip then never again lol.
Facts, Memphis natives don’t care about Graceland
Hey!!!! From Memphis 🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾🤘🏾 locals respect the peabody ducks more than Elvis 😂😂😂😂

If you like sauce, you go to Corky's or Cozy Corner and if you like dry rub The Rendezvous is the place to go. so it's actually both.
@@allandodson9241 I had the best BBQ chicken sandwich in my life at Corky's.
Kandis Young PeriodT
Hell naw
Tell them yasss
Nice, but not smart...wish he had a Bible on hand to read about the issues that Memphis faced in the Old Testament. I’m African and names are very spiritual and they carry weight ... it’s unfortunate that Memphis is still a struggling city in 2020... I’ll drop one of scriptures you can research and see for yourself...............
Ezekiel 30:16
Verse Concepts
“I will set a fire in Egypt;
Sin will writhe in anguish,
Thebes will be breached
And Memphis will have distresses daily.
Right💯🤞
Worst field trip ever. I get the point but the feeling you get getting those hiding places is unreal.
There was this museum I visited in Memphis in an elementary school field trip I forgot what it was called but it definitely had something to do with slavery . We got to go underground to a piece of the Underground Railroad . They also had cotton .
The Cooper-Young District (Midtown) is a alternative to downtown. Less crowded and better bars & restaurants. Thank Me Later.
Also the gayest part of town so thats a +
I like mid town better. There's always something I missed before.
@@danidilay5430 Cooper young is within midtown
I got robbed twice at Cooper and Young. It's like a pretty garden surrounded by a prison.
@@tylerdurden9923 you definitely have to be cautious in any semi-touristy/drinking area in Memphis. that could happen anywhere.
And not a word about St Jude? Come on!
So many Memphis natives (including myself) have never been to Graceland lol. I don’t anyone here who has actually except a couple people
Guess I'll add Memphis to the growing list of places I want to visit when all of this is over. Beale St looks like a blast.
Billy Ruben as a Memphian I can say bill street is really fun especially on certain days
Billy, Beale at is great, Fri and Sun nights are best, not so crowded. Get outta there by midnite go to midtown, Layefettes Music hall on Overton square or Cooper Young, both areas are safe late night and only a couple miles away.
It’s fun, I recommend during the day or early evening then go to midtown for late night. Beale gets a little to rowdy for my taste late at night.
Beale St is great always have a great time
Billy Ruben, last but not least, when you come to Beale at, go to Blues City Cafe!!!!
Peace brother....
Yep from someone who lives in South Memphis don’t bring ya ass over here stay downtown. Lol we crazy over here 😂😂
awww, we aren't that bad in S. Memphis
Chuck Stewart lol which side of South Memphis you from, cause my side you hear shooting every night.

The only thing I would add is a free concert at the Levitt Shell when that city opens back up.
Being born and raised in Memphis, this was fun to see! Y’all should come by Memphis Rox for an excellent non-profit and a lot of fun! You’ll have to wait until social distancing is loosened, but its worth it!
I'm from Memphis too and LOVVVEEEE Memphis Rox. Chris is a great instructor for climbing!
@j77 It's a hidden gem in South Memphis, across from STAX Museum!
@j77 Cool beans! You will be amazed, TRUST me!
i will keep that in mind im always looking for a new adventure in this city.
I was nice seeing the good side of Memphis and the better quality it has to offer people traveling. Born and raised here we see so much of the negativity. Definitely come with a hungry appetite!! New subscriber here!!
Not enough negativity, apparently. Everyone is hateful and angry in this over grown trailer trash of a city. - A Memphis native
like any big city, depends what part of town you are in.

Once you live here and deal with the people you will understand
I live down town about a 5 minute walk from the Orpheus and I can say Memphis is not that bad... it is just certain areas that give Memphis a bad name. As long as you stay in the better areas of the city you have nothing to worry about.
catmodelt totally agree with everything you said!
catmodelt yeah it has changed a lot and within the last couple of years. I love living in the south bluff area. The downtown area has seen a lot of investment in the last couple years and the last time I checked I believe there was about15-20 billions dollars invested in new downtown projects and real estate. Give it another couple years and downtown Memphis will be worth twice as much as what’s it was.
