When venturing to unknown international destinations do you like to have a guide, go on a tour or plan your own adventure?
Plan my own, but I do lots of research and always get tips from locals.
Lovely girl
I love you Alice
I would rather go on my own, the guided tour groups limit the amount of time you can spend at any one location, if your female with a bus load of tourists, you will spend half your visit at each stop waiting to use the restroom, not kidding. With a group your always checking your watch to make sure your not going to be left behind, it's better to do your own thing and schedule, if your a older person or with disabilities your better off sticking with the group.
Solo most of the time, but a one-on-one private guide for serious mountaineering or for first day overview in a big city with tons of stuff to see.
The Dolomites catch my breath with their stunning beauty. Alice, these views will stay in your heart for many years to come. Happy birthday, adventurous lady!
Thank you so much. Happy adventuring
That trip seems special. Glad you made it happen. "Stunning views" would be an understatement. An ultimate adult playground, of sorts, where the moment you hit the first trail and head into the mountains nothing else matters but the adventure that's just begun.
It was very special
Such a beautiful area with spectacular mountain views. Would really like to visit there someday. Alice looks like you had a really great day on your birthday. Your courageous.
Thank you Mickey.
Congratulations on concurring the challenges and fears you encounter in the beautiful Dolomites, i’m proud of you Alice. Also a belated happy birthday! Jim
Thanks Jim. Much appreciated
Thanks for sharing your beautiful birthday adventure with us, spectacular views
You’re so welcome
A fantastic hike you did there Alice. You outdone yourself with this video, the time spent editing, spectacular views throughout and great soundtrack. I enjoyed every second of it. Very detailed and I must say that you gave me vertigo when you reached the summit (the one with the helpful hiker you followed). You are brave, no contest. Thanks for sharing 🌻🇮🇹🍺😎☯️🏔🥾
Thanks Radisson
This has been on my bucket list for years! You are ine lucky lady!
Time to plan a trip
Absolutely breathtaking shots my friend, this is one outstanding presentation! Narrated part is just amazing!🔥🔥🥾🥾
Thank you so much. I’m glad it came across in the way I had hoped
Nice, Alice! Wish we'd run into since we were there at almost the same time. Totally relate to how you were feeling in that scree field. We did tons of via ferratas and they were all amazing, but the super steep scree was brutal! Still, we loved the Dolomites so much that we're definitely going to go back repeatedly, and possibly even next summer. Hope you will too!
Yes I should have reached out I enjoyed your videos too. It’s such a beautiful area. I’d love to see it in the fall
Happy Birthday 🎂 🥳 Alice, thank you for an amazing journey, stay safe and take care my friend 👋🙂Absolutely stunning views 👍
Love your videos Alice !!! We were in the Dolomites about a month ago - can't wait to go back 😀
PS. I think you're incredibly brave !!! You've done things that i could only dream if doing !!
Thanks Craig! Have a great night
Alice, I think this is the most dynamic video you have done to date. The Dolomites are tremendously beautiful and you have captured them and your extensive hike in detail. Great job!
Thank you Dennis. I wish I’d had the energy to do a few more days, that being said I’m very glad you enjoyed it
This is your best video yet. Just mesmerizing! Not only is the scenery fantastic, but I really like how you included your moments of vulnerability. That added real depth to the overall segment. Bravo!
Thank you Michael I’m really glad you liked it
I was scanning your videos and noticed I never watched this one. So good! The sections with the cables? No thank you! Those views are incredible, though. Thank you for keeping me company while I do my dishes and clean the stove😊
Dishes and cleaning are great SUNDAY activities glad I could keep you company. Thanks for watching this was certainly a epic adventure
Alice! You are amazing for doing that alone. My husband and I did the Alta Via 1 but together. The Tabaco map folks have an app that was our biggest find. On our smart phone even without phone connection, the app found us and saved our bacon more than once. We used a service that specifically specialized in self guided. They planned it, but it was just him and me. The services set us up with baggage too, transporting our ‘bigger’ bag from day one to day 10. But shhhh… we don’t want everyone to know how amazing it is up there!
That’s wonderful. I didn’t have that App but certainly wish I knew about it sooner. I looked into the porter services but didn’t know if it was possible for the interior mountain huts. I left most of my belongings at my hotel in Bolzano and just took what I could carry for the few days
Beautiful. I was there in 1979 at age 17 with a YMCA group and I went up the ferrata until the ridge with no gear and without asking for permission. Now I'm 61 and considering getting to the summit of Kesselkogel this time. By the way you ended up at Seiser Alm (Alpe Suisi), which is north as you state -- not what you show on the map.
Good for you completing the Via Ferrata! It's crazy how just having someone with you makes the exposure less scary. Having done a different VF (with a guide) that was 5 hours with lots of knife-edge ridges, I found that the first 30 minutes are super-scary, the next hour is moderately scary, and then your mind just adapts and the fear just goes away. Happy birthday!!!
Thanks Marco! Yes I actually hire guides on many of the more extreme hikes I do just for this reason. Happy hiking
Congrats on an awesome birthday adventure and overcoming those thousand butterfly moments. That ridge line was crazy🙃
That ridge line 😲 was a whopper thanks for watching
For mountainous terrain you have to consider the weather, elevation, amount of daylight you have to work with, a person can easily walk 25 miles in a day on flat terrain without obstacles, but climbing & descending steep hills / mountains your going to want halve that or less, 12 miles in difficult terrain might be the safe limit to do it with adequate daylight, same is true in a thick swamp or jungle, ( don't want to miss that dinner you paid for at the hut ). As for youth hostels, i thought i would save some money by staying at one in downtown Toronto on vacation, so about 40 minutes into the stay i realized i would get a better sleep in my car instead of listening to a American veteran who needs a C-pap for sleep apnea, so i spent the night in my cold car instead, true story.
Love the follow-up segment. I stayed in a hut in the German alps that included dinner/breakfast, and a free belt of plum schnapps before hitting the trail in the morning. That was appreciated much more than sleeping in one big wide bet with ten guys....😂🤣
Haha I bet it was. That sounds awesome minus the ten beds
What an intense adventure. Glad we could visit via your video. Don’t think we’ll be hiking this one ourselves. Wow!
It certainly was an adventure for the books
To answer your question, I always preferred off the beaten path when travelling, hiking solo, planning my own trip. Travelling with a crowd takes away a sense of adventure. Unless we are with friends, that's different. It is good to have company ☮️☯️😎🇨🇦🇺🇸
Bucket list destination. Gorgeous videography, just stunning.
Belated Happy Birthday and thanks for sharing your awesome adventures.
Thank you thank you
Great video Alice looked a bit tricky in places . Lovely scenery thank you for taking us along with you and a happy belated birthday 🎂
Thank you. There was certainly some challenging parts of the hike that’s for sure.
Great blog Alice-one of the best I have seen--really informative and gives confidence to those who might be wary.
Great insights for people
Poles are good!
Ken UK
Thank you so much Ken
Wow, amazing hike Alice. You’re braver than I am. The moment where you were reflecting on your responsibilities happens as we age. I’m glad you pressed through. I’d love to hike in Europe, Grand Paradisio, and Mt. Blanc are couple of places on my mind to visit. I enjoyed this video, beautiful places, and informative. And happy birthday! What great way to spend it…
Fantastic call on safety! And happy belated (early?) birthday!
you’re route starts just like mine! i’m staying at several other huts and making it a 7 day route. Highly recommend Tre Cime next. i did that as part of the Alta Via 4 and it was so awesome! loved the video, subscribed
I enjoyed watching this video!
Happy Birthday, Alice!🍸
Thank you
This is perfect timing. I recently started planning a trip to the Dolomites next year. This will give me some good tips. I also will be going solo.
Glad to hear it feel free to DM me if you have any questions
Wow, what a trip/hike in the Dolomites
Super fun ! Looks like it would be too easy to wind up with an injury on the level surfaces in that region . So sad the news of the collapse .
I certainly saw some mountain rescues
Happy birthday, I'm glad you were able to overcome that fear and crush that summit.
Me too, thanks so much
Happy birthday day Alice with much love and light, 🎉🎉🎉
Thank you for all your videos
🙏❤️
Appreciate the longer videos. Thanks Alice
Glad to hear that
Great!!
Now come to Huayhuash Trek
Hopefully soon!
@@AliceFordAdventures we are here for your logistical support!!
I want to be as cool as Alice when I grow up 😂 THANK YOU!
Just arrived in the Dolomites without any planning. We are in December, it’s cold, windy cloudy, foggy… the cable cars are not yet open. It’s going to rain all day tomorrow and snow tomorrow night. Cars are to be left in expensive car park (24€). A fiasco of a trip. Unless there is a miracle happening soon. Don’t do like me. Do like Alice. Plan, plan, plan.
Also! if anyone wants to do this route and skip the ferratas, that’s very doable as well! no gear, no ladders, just a hike
Ahhh, oh wow! Such a relief, whew! Great camera work too!
Thanks so much
I love mountains very much. I love hiking in the mountains. I love watching other people's videos. But when you are in the frame on the video. I don't notice anything on your background 💃🔥🔥🔥✌🏼
Looks really stunning all around, hiking heaven!
Absolutely I could have spent a few weeks hiking here
I could feel your enormous joy!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Awesome view. Keepsafe always Alice.
Thank you Alice, looking forward to it👋🙂
Thanks!
Thank you so much friend
I really enjoyed the video. I need to stick to the less scary routes but plan on doing as many as I can. Bolzano is very beautiful and has the best museum ever. It tells the story of Otzi. He is actually there so you can view him.
I loved Bolzano as well one of my favorite little Italian towns. The best part about this area is that you can stick to regular hiking trails you don’t have to do any of you Ferradas another great trail that’s really popular in the dolomites is the Alta via 1 which has no via ferrattas
Wow, way to push through fears!! That was admirable
Happy Birthday Alice!🎊🎉🎈
I love your videos, and this was one of my favorites, great job! I have been to the dolomites, but not to hike. I really wanna go back for that, and since you ask if you can help in anyway, going with me would really help!😎 then to Tuscany and do a wine tour! 😁
😆awesome thanks for watching. Florence has some great wine
Good Stuff!
I loved watching the video, but if I may give a tip: it probably needs some colour grading as the colours are a bit soft and especially the skin tones are off.
For the trekking poles it's ridiculous to look only at physique and/or stamina. These are some very useful tools for avoiding stress on the joints, especially for steep descents. I use them all the time when I do a trek, how challenging or unchallenging it may be.
I hiked the Alta Via 1 last year from 24 June until 1 July and I'm glad I avoided the extreme hot weather in the next weeks. The accident on the Marmolada took place only two days later... If possible, it's recommended to hike in June or in September in the Dolomites as it's less warm and less populated.
For the via ferratas there are also ratings that scale each via ferrata from easy to hard. Best to check these ratings before you start. You're incredibly brave to do that via ferrata. I was already getting afraid by just looking at the video.
Thanks for your comments this video was color graded, but I used different camera settings in this video choosing to shoot in flat instead of vivid and I was not happy with the results.
I will certainly get trekking poles next time bar cause I agree they are super helpful especially when it’s very steep
Maybe you’ ve taken a risk on the ridge of the mountain Rosengarten. Often the challenge can be a nightmare. You had lucky!
Great scenery.
Cool , cu in Interlaken, Switzerland 🏔️
Wonderful video! I really appreciated how you talked about your feelings and fears at various points. We all have those same experiences!
Quick question- what is the name of the via ferrata you took from Passo Principe that was so challenging?
Hey Alice, loved your video! I am a kiwi wanting to go hiking in the Dolomites as you have done - i've been doing extensive research but cant seem to figure out how to book the huts yet for the 2023 season. Any advice or links?
Huts have to be emailed individually. I used Google earth to plan my hikes. It’s rather confusing first figure out what routes you want to do and then find the huts that work with the routes then email them with your dates. There are no booking websites for the huts
Hi Alice! I'm not sure if you're monitoring comments this late after publishing the video, but I thought I'd take a shot at asking a question. First of all though, THANK YOU SO MUCH for the detail at the end of the video! When you left Bolzano to start your backpacking, how/where did you store your non-backpacking gear/luggage? I've seen long term storage lockers or sometimes your return destination hotel will take the bags for a transportation/storage fee. We are planning an Alps/Europe vacation with some hut backpacking, but aren't sure of the best way to store gear for a week or so while we are backpacking. Thanks for all your content!
Hi Coleman, For this trip I booked the same hotel for the pre and post night of my backpacking trip and stored my luggage there. For trips I have taken in the past I have stored luggage at the airport but usually try to do the pre/post hotel and have never had an issue with a hotel in any country storing my luggage with the proof of return booking. I hope you have a fantastic trip! I stayed at the ParkHotel Laurin which is right by the train station. Somewhere closer to the mountains in one of the small mountains towns is great too
@@AliceFordAdventures Thanks Alice! That makes sense. I'd prefer to not use a locker at the airport since we are planning to stay in the area after backpacking vs. flying somewhere else.
This is so cool to have all these hut distances so obtainable. Do you bring an ultralight tent as a backup in case of bad weather coming in and you can’t make the next hut?
Hi Liz, no need for a tent there are so many huts spread throughout the mountains
JUST WOW
Happy belated birthday! Looks like it was an amazing trip and I’m glad you were able to conquer that scary via ferrata! Did you find out why sections were missing or was that just the standard, terrifying route? lol! I’ve never done a via ferrata before, but it’s definitely on my list. Side note: awesome drone shots!
Thank you. I did not find out but I’m not sure how much trail maintenance happens in this area. Everyone says to always check bolts and hangers before clipping in so I’m sure they either wore out or just didn’t seem necessary to whoever built this to it e
Amazing
Beautiful video Alice!!! What is the song name at min 24??
What Alta Via is this?
Happy Bday [late]. I wish I could, but noooo way could I trek through the mtns in my running shoes!
I am trying to binge watch your adventures = Keep them coming
Hi!!! Where did you get your scarf/head wrap from?? thanks!
Sorry I’m not sure I remember where I got that.
In your opinion what was the most beautiful hut in the rosengarten group? I’m heading that way in September
Ooh that’s a tough one. I really loved my first hut Roda Di Vael but the Alpe di Tires is also really beautiful.
😮
Alice! What did you do with your main luggage while hiking in the dolomites?
I stored it at the hotel in Bolzano. I always book the same pre and post hotel and they’ve never had an issue storing in any country I’ve ever traveled to
How does that steep climbing compare to Angel's Landing at Zion in your estimation?
Angels landing is no where near as steep as the passes in the Dolomites but there are some sections that are certainly comparable
@@AliceFordAdventures and there are no climbing harnesses being used at Angel's Landing, I think. I only know what I have seen from your video and others at Zion. I chose not to do that hike when I was there. Thanks!!
@@guillermoyjulia yes people don’t clip in on Angels landing although you certainly could.
@@AliceFordAdventures Great! Your videos continue to educate and inspire! Thank you
Could you direct me on where i can book the huts :) eg. emails :)
Each hut is different. Are you wanting to book the same ones I stayed in?
