    During my trip to France and Belgium I visited many war graves and read many memorials, I also traveled to historical sights, like Pegasus Bridge and the 5 beeches of Normandy, it was whilst visiting my fallen relatives graves and seeing all those headstones, It really hits hard. Especially when one is your relative. It had a distinctive effect on how i play war games and watch videos like this, I find myself to be less aggressive in Total War games and any other comparison.
    I guess you can say It made me soft.

    You're looking at about 1000 Entente tanks, with huge numbers lost in the Battle of The Somme and the Battle of Cambrais. The Germans only fielded 27 tanks in the war, and lost most of them at Villers-Bretonneux, which was also the first time in history there was tank vs tank combat. Only one German tank (an A7V) still exists and it's called Mephisto, captured at Villers-Bretonneux by Australian infantry and kept in the Australian War Memorial. It got neutralized on April 24, 1918 by tank and artillery fire, and on July 15, 1918, the Australians snatched it under heavy fire, dragging it back to friendly lines through gas and rifle fire. They carved their names into the armour and you can still see it today.

    The British and French, on the other hand, had a LOT of tanks, like thousands of tanks by 1918. With a extremely high loss percentage as well (more than 70% of the tanks were disabled during the first few days of the Battle of Amiens), by German anti-tank infantries and artilleries (just like in the video). So don't really need to worry about losing the entire Royal Tank Corps in a battle like this Diplex, the Germans though, it's what you should be worrying about since they only had about 50 or so tanks during WWI.

  • @GhostBoyNinja
    @GhostBoyNinja 9 років тому +17

    Hi Diplex, one cool idea for a battle is to recreate the Battle of Cumbria. It was arguably the first tank battle in history and saw combat between approx. 450 mk v tanks and around 2 corps of combined allied forces. The battle itself was in the 'impenetrable' dutch village held by the second german army. There may be some historical inaccuracies, but i think as it was the 'first' tank battle it would be cool to recreate in the editor

    • @Kyliandejong

      it couldn't be a dutch village. The netherlands was neutral. And I think it was in france

    • @Crash-To-Desktop
      @Crash-To-Desktop 9 років тому

      kylian de jong They might have been neutral, but that didn't stop Germany from invading it to get around France's defended border with Germany.
      The first tank-to-tank battle happened in Viller-Bretonneux, where two British tanks squared off against a German tank, and both sides kind of backed off because they had no idea what to do against another enemy tank. The battle you named was the first en-mass use of the tank by the British, e.g. "hit with a fist, not an open hand."

    • @Kyliandejong
      @Kyliandejong 9 років тому +5

      They didn't invade the netherlands. First they wanted to with the von schlieffen plan but respected the netherlands neutrality. They then only went through belgium and fought there. The netherlands still mobilised but never saw action.

    Well the British produced over 1200 Mark IVs alone and there were 400 Mark Vs.
    Interestingly enough, when the Americans joined the war... they were grossly under-equipped and what little they had was out-dated. The British basically armed the American expeditionary force (they were actually still using Brodie helmets up until 1942) and in an effort to sweeten up the Americans, the British and French produced a "joint" tank and called it the Liberty (just over 100 made) and that remained in service in the American army up until the 30s, I believe.
    Sorry if any of this is wrong. It's off the top of my head so I haven't got exact figures.

      @MrFone97 9 років тому

      Yes, you are right, the French gave them Chars FT-17 and Planes too. When the Americans arrived in late 17, they had no experience with this war, they had only Springfield Rifle, sold by Brits, and Maxim machine gun.

    Thing about tanks for the British:
    They usually operated in Squadrons of 3 or more. Rarely did you get a lone tank or squadrons made up of one type of each tank.
    Also, some of the British were using Metford Rifles in this video which, if it was a 1917 scenario, they should not be. All troops in 1917 were using the Lee-Enfield, at least in the Western Front.
    Now, if you were to do the African Front, then you'd see quite a few metfords.

    Tanks were actually quite effective in their use in World War I... at least in terms of getting into the opposing lines. Though many times, they were effective because they had substantial pre-attack bombardment from their own guns that would do damage to the enemy lines... allowing the tanks to advance without facing an undamaged gun-line, which is what you had...
    If you ignore the 1915 helmets... you pretty much had a good "reenactment" of the last phase of the British attack at Cambrai (though I don't know about the terrain there... so I can't say how accurate the ground was), late in 1917. The initial attack had been spectacularly successful for the British, but in trying to push forward... at the end they got beyond what their field artillery had hit, or could hit, and the Germans had worked together a gun line of cannon that put most of the tanks out of action.

    During the first day of the battle of cambrai the British deployed 476 tanks 378 of them were combat tanks and the rest were either supply or carried infantry ect the second day only saw half that number go into action mainly due to mechanical failure but a number of tanks were knocked out. The A7V basically a big metal shed with tracks and the cross country ability of a toaster the only good things about it were it's main gun and fairly thick armour but the thing did have a crew of 18 which is ridiculous when you see the thing for yourself that's why the Germans if they could they would capture abandoned British tanks. The main thing to remember is the female was produced the most because the machine guns were more useful.

    Hey Diplex if you're ever looking for a map I made one for use in the editor if you want to check it out. The French are defending the town and have built some fortifications to defend it.

  • @The51stDivision
    @The51stDivision 9 років тому

    WWI Fun Fact: The Germans actually had more captured Allied tanks than their own A7Vs, which the German only produced 20. The German high command never appreciated those clumsy, fragile, metal stuff and throughout the entire WWI there was no large-scale tank assaults by the Germans. Their biggest tank offensive was probably during the 1918 Kaiserschlacht, in which they possessed no more than 40 tanks, and more than half of them were captured from British. So yeah a German tanks assault like the one in the video is not very likely to happen historically, or you would wipe out the entire armoured forces of the Second Reich XD.

The attackers have an allocated amount of troops (or whatever) and they have to destroy/capture 1 or 2 objectives. For every objective they capture/destroy, the more reinforcements(?) they recieve.

You would have a British pilot that crash landed behind german lines as they prepare for the battle of the Marne. You would have a a squad of 7 French Soldiers ( Officer, 3 Rifle, Medic, Sniper and Sapper)
    mount a rescue mission to save him and bring him back to the French lines while he must not be spotted by patrols.
