The initiative titled 'Inspired by Birds and Butterflies of Bhutan' is a project spearheaded by the GEF Ecotourism Project, known for its mission to incorporate biodiversity conservation into Bhutan's tourism sector, and operates under the Department of Tourism. This project is being conducted in collaboration with the Royal Textile Academy (RTA) of Bhutan.
The project is the first of its kind, where upcoming local fashion designers are collaborating with weavers from the remote communities of Lhuentse, Trashigang, Pemagatshel and Samdrup Jongkhar.
The Royal Textile Academy organised a comprehensive training program that spanned nine days, focusing on the techniques of natural dyeing and the creation of innovative motifs. These motifs, richly influenced by Bhutan's diverse biodiversity and its array of endangered species, including the country's emblematic butterfly, hornbill, white-bellied heron, elephants, and black-necked cranes, were a primary focal point.
The culmination of the training was the 'Khoma Fashion Show,' a platform where the skilled weavers showcased their intricately woven Kira garments, and the designers, drawing inspiration from birds, butterflies, and endangered species, presented a selection of their newly crafted motifs. Excitingly, the culmination of this initiative will be the grand display of the final collections during a fashion show hosted at the Royal Textile Academy this November.
