I'm Indian Guyanese and my wife is Indian Gujarati from Kenya. We share the Hindu faith and traditions and basic Indian outlook on life, family education etc. Our children have the best of both worlds. From my side, the food which is a combination of ethnic Indian (curry, roti, dhal, etc) mixed with African (salt fish, plantain, pepper pot) language (my parents never lost their accents and manner of speaking). When we first started dating my wife used to ask me for translations for what my parents said. She's used to it now. From my wife's side, the food (vegetarian) language (Hindi and Gujarati) and Garba. I am glad my children have been able to experience both Indian and Guyanese traditions through both sets of grandparents and my wife and I.

I've never seen so many people get butthurt over this innocent girl answering the questions of her viewers and expressing what she knows based on her upbringing.
And they're all Guyanese people. How do you get offended by someone else's life? Telling her to "get educated"? Educate yourself to understand everyone's different. Is she supposed to be an expert on the whole country just so you can sleep well at night?
    Like gtfo.

    • @vibertjaielliott4636

Nobody's offended. I think they're all just asking her to get more familiarized with her heritage. It's a part of her life and from this video we can tell that she's a bit under informed about it. Like she said, "there's no right way to be brought up" but there's a wrong way and it includes a lack of knowing where you come from. Put aside the negativity and let's all just live together happily.

You could be mainly indo-Guyanese and still have some Afro-Caribbean, Portuguese etc inside you and visa versa a lot of Afro-Caribbean’s have some Indian chinese etc inside them but can still be predominantly black/African. In other words, the people in the Caribbean are a little different/unique to people from their respective lands from where they came so she should be allowed to embrace that unique side of her.

Your dna matches 100% with the indians from up/ bihar in india. Lets not mix nationality with your ethnicity. So again IF your ethnicity isnt mixed your ethnicity is Indian( english) , hindustani ( urdu) . The ones who did mixed are partial indian.

    I would like to clarify:
    1) Since my Mother is Guyanese, I am as well- it's my heritage.
    2) Just because I am mixed does not mean I do not know about one culture or the other. They both make me who I am and everyone is brought up differently. There is no "right" way to be brought up.
    3) By saying Guyana is hard to get to, I mean it is still expensive for me personally and there is a lot that you have to do to prepare to go to South America. This is just the reality. So far I have been lucky enough to go to India but of course I would love to go to Guyana! It just happened that I was able to go to India first.

Only One Amen to that!Guyana is also inhabited by people of mixed races/ ethnicities as I am.The racial discord/disharmony was ramped up the politicians mostly black- the PNC against the PPP mostly East Indian political party.
But there was always racism as in many countries of the world.
We were a former colony of the British Empire from whom our language, customs, education, religion and judicial system came from.
With the additional input from unique cultures of the races present.
The British brought people of very different and distinct cultures, religions and languages to form the people of the colony.
Blacks as slaves until emancipation. East Indians as indentured slaves to work the sugar and rice plantations. They would remain until today the two main races in Guyana. And all the rivalries/ hatreds would centre around these groups.White and Chinese would be the the largely ignored minority.Except the white people English and Portuguese would be part of the ruling class of the colony until independence when they forced to leave.
The East Indians would prosper to mostly leave the plantations to succeed at all levels of society as the White and Chinese.
Some blacks were successful in colonial society in business, judicial, medical and education system. But not as much as the races above.
So of course there were problems from time to time.
The British were able to keep the lid on the occasions of rioting, looting, killing etc.But sometimes had to bring in troops and declare martial law. This was predominantly for Afro-Guyanese as has happened in other countries for perceived or real discrimination/ ill treatment.
Independence was won from the British by the efforts of LFS Burnham a lawyer and Dr.Cheddi Jagan a dentist by training.
The USA would favour LFS Burnham as Dr.Jagan espoused Socialism/Marxism and the plan to take the control of foreign controlled industries- bauxite and sugar.
An internal self government of Dr. Jagan would be overthrown by the British and American governments.
LFS Burnham would be installed and he would begin a brutal, corrupt and racist government that only give opportunities at all levels of government to mostly black people.
Also the suspension of free and fair elections
LFS Burnham would carry out the plan of Dr.Jagan to nationalise some of the foreign controlled industries. He would then be isolated by the West and forced to trade with the Eastern Block.
Poverty, lawlessness, corruption, suspension of free and fair elections, crime, racially motivated violence against the East Indian population would continue until today.
Elections would return eventually return about the late 80's and early 90's under pressure of the USA. But the above problems would persist the crime, corruption, the racial disharmony/ violence against East Indians.
The drug trade would become the economy of the country with the failure of sugar, rice and bauxite industries.
Some of us were able to treat each other well across the divide of race and politics.I am proud of my heritage as other people are proud if theirs.
May God help all peoples to live in harmony, tolerance, love, respect and understanding.

Today almost 90% of the East Indians in Guyana continue to follow their Indian roots by celebrating Diwali, Holi. They also eat traditional Indian food in their daily diets and even fast.

Indentured labor when someone signs a contract to work for a fixed number of years for a set price. I think the contract was 5 Years. That’s what Indians entered into in Guyana. They were not “forced” to go to Guyana, they volunteered because they were told they can get work and it’s a better land. After 5 years it was expensive to go back (some did) and some purchased land and settled down and had a family. Does that sound like slavery? Granted they were not treated good by their bosses as their bosses were use to managing black slaves and treated the Indian workers similarly but they were not slaves, they were free.

    Hey Soni Kholi
I am Indo-Guyanese and I think your mother is too. My great great grandfather and grandmother left British India and head to British Guiana (Guyana) on the South American continent as Indentured servants aka paid sugar workers aka paid farmers with a 5 year contract which included a free returned trip to British India. On the contracts the were registered as EAST INDIAN. After the five-year contract was up they were given their FREE return tickets to India but they joined over 100,000 others and decided to stay in Guyana voluntarily. They were offered 1-2 miles of lands to do farming on the British colony because the freed African slaves were not interested in any form of farming. The land was a jungle and without any machine or electric tools they cleared it and made it the farm-land you see across Guyana today. Approximately 75,000 returned to India.
Today...there are 139,000 Guyanese of Indian ethnicity living in Guyana while some 200,000 plus migrated to USA, Canada and UK, some are Hindus, Muslims, and Christians.
Just like South African, Fiji, & Trinidad they are recognized as INDO...meaning of Indian Ethnicity.
For decades Guyana has a Indian Consulate and recently India built a huge monument in Guyana to recognize the Indians living in Guyana and keeping their Indian culture with pride.

@Jodhan Beshaan The story about the immigration of Indians to Guyana is exactly the same as the immigration of Indians to Suriname. Also in Surinam the released slaves no longer wanted to work on the plantations and therefore immigrants from India and Indonesia brought Java to Suriname. They too were allowed to return to their motherland after 5 years of working on the plantations. The trip back to India / Indonesia was paid for them. However, most chose to stay in Suriname. They were given a piece of land as a reward, which they first had to make suitable for agriculture. It was very hard work. Both men and women have made every piece of wild land into farmland with hand tools and oxen / bulls. I am proud of my great great-grandparents. Thanks to their hard work I am now what I am.

brandis younge preach the gospel. I'm so tired of everybody trying to erase African culture from the picture when blacks in Guyana at one point outnumbered everybody and are now only the second largest group population wise. African influence is written all over the country from the reggae calypso soca music. The food the dance the folk stories the vernacular all African in heritage. Yes Indian culture is also prevalent but it by no means represents the dominant Guyanese identity.

Guyana is not hard to get to and there's a lot not a little bit of African culture there. You have no idea about Guyanese history and it's sad. The African presence there is extremely strong as at one point blacks made up the largest population there. Learn about the Cuffy statue. The reggae and soca music there is African in tradition. This whole video is about East Indian culture as far as I'm concerned. You didn't focus on the diversity of Guyana that makes its culture unique.

the ethnicity tag says Guyanese and East Indian so I would expect you to cover both ethnicities equally and you didn't highlight Guyanese culture in an honest and accurate manner. Oh and India is a very large third world country so I don't appreciate the downplaying of Guyana as some backwards underdeveloped region when Guyana is enormously rich in natural resources such as gold bauxite sugar rice etc. and many impoverished East Indians have acquired a lot of wealth upon their immigration to Guyana. Again, a simple effort to learn about your homeland is not a bad idea.. Like I said, I'm Guyanese born and raised for several years.

She probably made mistakes out of ignorance, like others pointed out and even she admitted.
However, your downplaying of India was deliberate and petty. People do not appreciate that either.
You could have simply educated her, like you did afterwards.
      Now I will educate you.
India used to be a Third World country until the 1990s when everything changed.
India is in the G6 and P6 now. That means it is within the top 6 richest/wealthiest countries in the World and top 6 most powerful countries in the World.
India has the most billionaires (measured in USD) of any country in the World. India has nuclear missiles, nuclear power stations, nuclear defence system, space rockets, satellites, etc., and one of the World's largest armies.
India covers a large area and has many natural resources as well. Remember, it is called the Sub-Continent.

It reflects in their Foods under customs, particularly India religious practices. March of the priests or pujari's performs the rituals based on Awadhi and Panjabi norms. Much of the culture is predominantly Hindu influenced due to a majority of Indians. Hanuman pooja (jandi) is commonplace.

I was also born in Manhattan in New York and am Indo-Guyanese by heritage. You seem to know more about India rather than Guyana. I don't blame you for not knowing too much about Guyana, I have the impression that your mother doesn't really talk about it or that you never really asked (in no way do I mean to offend you or her. I don't mean this in a rude nor mean way. I'm just saying, based on this video, it seems she didn't teach you much about Guyana nor did you maybe ask her about it, but thats just an assumption). Yes, research could of been done as well, but its alright! I'll help to inform you a bit, 'cause America doesn't teach you about Guyana in school anyways, so maybe this comment can help you learn a thing or two about the country now. First things first, there are 7 kinds of people in Guyana: one of the largest being the Indo-Guyanese. The Indians in Guyana were "indentured servants," thats what they want you to believe, but they were straight up slaves, just as the Africans were. They were tricked, kidnapped, and sold into slavery in Guyana. Africans came first though, they're the other largest group. (You should really watch the movie Guiana 1838, it gives you some information about the history of slavery in Guyana, and in my opinion it was a really good entertaining movie/documentary hybrid). I'm not going to give a full history lesson here, but there's also Chinese, Portuguese, British, Dutch, and natives called Amerindians. So we Guyanese have different looks to us having so much different groups and mixing, but we're all Guyanese nonetheless. Seeing that we're more focussed on the Indo-Guyanese people, "coolie" (racial slur referring to the Indians) workers were from northern and southern India, so if they were able to speak their mother language it would be some people speaking in Hindi and some in Tamil, even Bhojpuri as well. We all still semi speak our mother languages for religious reasons, some better than others, but not necessarily fluently. Definitely cannot read nor write in Hindi nor Tamil ect. Guyana was a British colony so every one basically lost their native tongue to speak, read, and write in English. However Guyana has its own dialect/language called Creolese or Guyanese Creole. Its broken English with barrowed words of different languages like Hindi in it. Its widely spoken throughout the Caribbean, but each West Indian country has its own spin to it, for example: Jamaican Patois(Patwah). Next, yeah your alter room could kinda represent Guyana in a way seeing that a large portion of the population is of Indian descent, so a lot of them have a Hindu based religion but not everyone is Hindu. The reason I'm saying Hindu based religion is because there are different denominations so to say. There are Aryan Hindus, who use Hindi as their language for prayer, but don't use murtis(idols)/alter rooms in their house nor mandir. They do rituals differently compared to other Hindu sects. Then there are the Madrasi Hindus who use Tamil not Hindi and worship Madrasi Gods which are also the same as regular Hindu Gods, but just by different avatars and names in some cases. They have alter rooms filled with murtis, but different rituals than Santana and Aryan Hindus. Santana is more well known typical Hindi based Hinduism. They have their set of rituals that differ from Madrasi and Aryan Hindus. They pray to murtis and have alter rooms as well. All 3 denominations I mentioned essentially worship the same God, they just have different rituals and languages from one another. Hinduism differs in Guyana versus India because unlike India the caste system isn't applied. In my opinion the caste system isn't even a part of the Hindu religion, it's more so a social/cultural aspect. Anyways, I digress. Not all Indo-Guyanese people are Hindu, theres also Muslims and Christians. Guyana is really interesting once you start to learn about its rich history and culture :).

Thanks. There's a huge population of people with Indian descent in the Caribbean. Most are in Guyana and Trinidad & Tobago, even in Jamaica, as well as many other countries in the Caribbean and South America. All these countries have a similar history 'cause they were all under British rule at the same time and gain independence around the same time as well. Thats why our cultures are so similiar in the West Indies. However, it's been a well over 150 years ago since the first Indian slaves/"indentured servants" were brought over.

I'm pretty much just like you, only both of my parents are from Guyana. And sometimes I also feel like it's hard to explain stuff, even though I should know most of these things, I just don't. Cause if I say one little thing to a guyanese person they'd get it, they'd understand what I mean. But if I say the same thing to an American person there would be so much explaining to do. And I'm just like, "Boii, I never thought I would have to explain something so much!" And I also can't even speak my own language, yeah, it's kinda sad. I don't even know what I'm supposed to speak, like dialect i guess. My older relatives, like grandmothers and stuff, they speak indian, or hindi i think. But it's fully hindi, or like not the primary thing i guess. And now I'm sad whenever my friends can talk to each other in thieir own language and I can't because I have no one. Even if I did i wouldn't be able to speak to them because ik nothing. So yeah that's me.
Holy crap this has been a lng comment......OK bye now :D

I completely understand your situation! But we really shouldn't have to explain ourselves for being different or for coming from a unique family :)

The vast majority of black people in Guyana are not immigrants nor are most of them of such descent. They arrived in Guyana as enslaved peoples from Africa brought by the British during the colonization of the country. Please choose your words wisely.

Bihari. Not Punjabi. All the migration took place from the poverty ridden UP and Bihar those days. It seems to be similar compared to other states in India now a days. You are not Punjabi.

Little girl, any Caribbean Airlines flight out of the US will get you to Guyana. Before you start youtubing about your "Guyanese" heritage, get your GT facts straight. We are a small country but its not a match box you can walk around in in 5 mins.

African Guyanese did not get on a plane and emigrate to Guyana. They were enslaved and taken there several centuries ago.
