Meet the ten Big Trees of Wellsford

  • These mighty giants, known by locals of the Wellsford Forest as the "Big Trees", are living examples of once-prolific Box-Ironbark Forest that dominated this landscape.
    We're lucky to have them - 83% of Box-Ironbark Forest have been cleared since European colonisation and no longer exist.
    These trees are pillars of the forest, vital for pollination, carbon storage and soil health and stability. They're really special.
    In Victoria there's no real legislative safeguards from domestic firewood collection or mining works for big old trees like these.
    Somehow Wellsford's Big Trees have managed to survived this long - we're working on plans that will keep them standing for even longer.
