I realize this video is 2 years old but thank you so much for these reviews. I'm considering TGATB history myself and you saying, 'im not a historian. Public education history didn't stick for me" made me chuckle because I feel the exact same way!
Thank you so much for this lovely review!! 💗 When we started homeschool and my girls were little (grades K & 1) we did Susan Wise Bower's The Story of the World together as read alouds for years and they LOVED history, along with Science it WAS a favorite. Then for high school they were doing more independent work with different Sonlight levels and they now no longer love history ☹️. It's just SO much with Sonlight. I love it because it's so thorough and my girls have a super solid history foundation with those two programs but I think they are just burnt out and overwhelmed by it. I'm now considering doing TG&TB history for this year instead, this will be their junior and senior years and we now also have a first grader! I'm hoping this last year of all the kiddos together could be a beautiful one making great memories and bringing back the love of history and joy to our homeschool 🙏🏼. So thanks again for this thorough review!! Blessings from Okinawa 🌺.
Just rewatched this video as I am currently searching for our history for the coming year! I have three boys, grades 7th, 5th and 2nd! I think this is just what I'm looking for! Thank you!
I have used Year 1 with my 4th and 6th graders this year. I feel like we covered a lot of information and they actually have retained most of what they learned. The read a louds were challenging, but I really think they helped cement the information. My kids loved the audio recordings and as well! They played the keys game a couple of times in the beginning and did not know most of the answers. It was a few months before they played it again and I was amazed at the factual information that they had retained! They both knew the answers to almost every question. Using all of the resources that this curriculum offers, I feel that we have received a very well rounded year of history! ❤
Thank you so much for this video!! I’ve been praying about using The Good & The Beautiful since last year. Finally started their Language Arts in January. I can’t wait to add this history program to our homeschool next year. I’m so excited to have a curriculum that I can teach all my kiddos at the same time. What a blessing! Thanks again for this video.
I am doing Year 1 with my 16yo daughter and we have finished the lessons of Unit 1. She is putting final touches to her projects from her 10th-12th grade Student Explorer, which is completely independent and she had to plan it out herself. She did pretty good with that, but agonized a little too long over one essay, so got behind. Lol! That’s okay. I’d say it’s a win for the first time planning something homeschool all on her own! I love your TG&TB videos of all of your videos. You are the one who initially sold me on it a year ago. I can’t wait until their Greenleaf High School things are ready! *jumping up and down with joy* I need to watch your videos faster and get caught up. It’s summer and I’m watching winter things. Lol!
I am not a homeschooling mom and bought this curriculum for my two boys. I am taking it slowly since time is a factor, but what I started with are the stories in the book you shared. I plan on going back and working on the lessons over the summer. I love the idea of the different time periods and just adding on to what they are learning in school or may not be learning in school. How do you like the books that come with the program? Did you mention that? I love to read aloud to my children. Read Aloud's are so very important and I want to foster a love of reading and learning. Learning history is so very important in our lives. I am currently reading The Read Aloud Family and it is so inspiring and always brings me back to what is so very important when we are raising young children.
We’ve absolutely loved it, too!! I have a 9 and 7 year old doing this and it has been so fulfilling. We tried too hard to go full on Charlotte Mason last year and we’re burnt out from all the reading. I have enjoyed so much learning beside them. Like you, history just didn’t stick in public school, but now I’m reading books in my own time dealing with history because I just want to devour it all! We’re excited for year 2 😍
I noticed she said there are printable assignments for grades 1-3 (or did she say K-3) and also different ones for grades 4-6. I wanted to mention that there are also different printable assignments for grades 7-9 plus other assignments for grades 10-12. Really cool! I'm just starting out my first year of this course and am excited about it and find myself and kids excited when it's time for history. ❤
We are loving it as well! This is the third history curriculum we've tried in our 5 years of homeschooling and it's such a relief to finally find the perfect fit for us.
I just ordered year 1! I’m excited to use it for my kiddos. We have a large family too, so doing history with everyone at once is how I have to teach history too.
Love this!! My oldest is 4 so I'm planning to do themes for social studies for K-1 and start TGTB history maybe when she is in 2nd grade. I truly don't remember learning history until high school and like you said, it just didn't stick with me. Thank you for this video!!
I love your homeschool/curriculum videos. I am going to be homeschooling 2 of my kids starting in August for the first time. I love your positive and honest advice and your good ideas. Do you do a curriculum for your Bible study?
I started history year 1 mid year. We just got through ancient history. My9 year old enjoyed it, my 6 year old was so so. I think it helps if you have older elementary kids involved :)
We also loved history year 1 for all of your same reasons this year. I an a sonlight diehard but couldn't make it work with my four, grade 7 down to grade 3. Now looking at next year I think we might be able to return to some of the core w books and they will work for everyone, but I'm a bit torn because all of this material is so good! :) plus as Canadians we do our own thing when it comes to covering Canada's history. So we'll see.
Hi, Ashlee! I'm currently binge watching and creating playlists on homeschooling but I noticed something is terribly missing in all these videos so I've decided to put out a request/suggestion to a few channels. Would you please consider doing a flip-through and/or review of say the top three (or five) curriculum options in a certain subject area for the same grade/level? I don't ever see reviews or flip-throughs that compare SAME subject AND level/grade. That would be really helpful to new homeschooling moms like me. Thank you so much in advance if you grant my request!
Anything you teach your kids about history will be better than what the public school cancel culture is teaching or omitting from history. Your kids will know more than the average college age student does. Especially the constitution course!!
This was perfect timing! I was looking into this history program for next year. Thank you for the review. It looks awesome!! I remember you saying in a previous video that you do one unit of history and then take a break from history and do a science unit? Has that still been working for you?
Thank you for this review!! My oldest will be second grade next year & we're starting TGTB history! Was looking at Sonlight also, but it seemed a little overwhelming.
Hi Ashley, I just purchased the good and the beautiful science and history curriculum, Level 2 (level 1 was out of stock). My First time purchasing any curriculums ever so I’m super excited! I also have four children but are a little bit more spaced out in grades than yours. I have a 2nd grader, a 3rd grader, a 6th grader, and an 8th grader. I was wondering what you would suggest I do with my 8th grader if this history/ science is not advanced enough for him. I too would love to only teach one course to all of them but not sure that will be possible.
I know you used this course when your children were younger and at this time have now completed all the history years. We have not used this course as of yet. I am considering using it for my upcoming 9th and 5th grader. Using the student books do you feel this will be enough for a high schooler?
Great Review! Thanks for sharing. I like this history curriculum and thinking about what will be a great fit for my kids and myself for next coming year.
I’m debating how much I want to stick with Sonlight next year. We have done it for the last two years and I have enjoyed many aspects of it, but this is also our first and only curriculum so I’m wondering if I should branch out more. My two are 18 months apart, so we can do do big things like science, read alouds and history together. Next year I will have a second grader and a kindergartener. Would you have stuck with Sonlight if you only had to teach one core? Thoughts?
I'm so intrigued by TGATB. Do you use strictly that curriculum or do you incorporate others? I'm hoping to get to a homeschool convention soon and get to see it all in person. So happy I found your videos ❤
We will be using this next year so very excited! Love your videos! Off topic, you have shared a book that you use that is Church a history.. how do you utilize that book or incorporate?
Hi! I'm new to your channel... I am discerning homeschooling for the 2019-2020 school year and am really attracted to the TGTB curriculum ; I've been researching Seton, Sonlight, and CHC as well, but I love the way TGTB flows and looks - and I also love the history and science family courses. Anyway, are there lesson plans for anything? I see the scope and sequence pages, but wasn't sure if there were actual lesson plans for me to follow along day to day. As a newbie, I feel like those would help tremendously... just wondering. Thanks!
I think in an earlier video you mentioned alternating science and history units. Are you still doing this, or have you gone back to doing both subjects each week, just on different days?
I’m looking for a new history and knew you’d have the video I wanted😂😂 my question was can I use level 1 for my third and fifth grader. I love that you can print the different grade level questions! That’s amazing. We used nottgrass this year and I do love it. No complaints. But they don’t really have a second year option for their age 😐 it’s like we did the one year now there’s nothing else lol
My daughter who is in second grade isn’t retaining the history from the curriculum. She gets so upset when I tell her it’s history day. Do you have any tips and making their lessons more fun?
At this age students are generally expected to retain about 10% really. It will be reported later. Maybe relax it and h=just read to enjoy. it can be hard too because it's history, it's the past and quite abstract still for someone who has only lived 7 or 8 years and walking and talking for even fewer of those years.
Yes just think about how much u remember from history? Like most of us prob not much so it’s beneficial to use it over again at different ages to get it instilled in their memory
Thank you for this review. I hope to use this program next year! Also what are you planning on doing next year since you will have one in 7th grade? Will they do something different? Or do you think it's good for 7th too?
How would this history work from a secular point of view. We use TGATB for language arts and love it and have even used some of the science units. As a background we are not against our kids learning about Christianity, we just want to make sure they are exposed to a global/ world view, etc....
New to homeschooling, looking for some seasoned advice... If I am doing year 1 history this year with my 3rd and 1st grader, would I move on to year 2 the following year? Or would I stick with year1 until they are a little bit older?
I’ll have a second grader and kindergartener next year. Do you think the recommended read aloud for each unit will interest those ages? I’m so excited to try this out next year. Thanks for the review!
I used this with my second grade daughter. The first read aloud was too heavy for her so we read The Boy of the Pyramid instead and she liked that, however, I stopped using the curriculum after the first unit because I would read all the lessons and stories and she would just tell me that she really didn’t understand any of it. It made it hard when I would have to ask her certain questions about what she learned from the story and she couldn’t tell me anything. It was such a bummer for me because I really wanted her to like it but in the end I just had to go with something less deep. We have been focusing more on geography for the remainder of her second grade year and she is really enjoying it. I do plan on adding history in for her third grade year but I’m thinking of doing Notgrass history “Star-Spangled Banner” instead. I think once we get to fourth grade this history would be more understandable for my daughter.
I am trying to plan out our year and will be using history your one. I see it is suggested to do three lessons a week, just like you said you did. However, if I do that, we will be done with history in January. How does that work?
Briana Runde I didn’t run into that issue? We shot for 3 but some weeks did 2. And we did finish history before our year ended so we moved into another science unit:)
I love this review! My oldest is 4, so I know we won’t need it for a bit, but I was just wondering when you would start with history and science? I know they have language and math for kindergarten
What about when your oldest is in 7th grade??? Do you think it will be enough for middle school years?? I have 5 kids but my oldest 4 are in the exact same grades as yours. We’re doing story of the world. They enjoy it but a whole year of the same period in history is though 😖
Mama Karaba I have used this curriculum with my 6th and 2nd grader but not with my older children because it did not provide enough for the older kids. We have done other middle school and high school courses and in comparison, TGATB was not rigorous enough to prepare for college. Also, while I would not necessarily say there are inaccuracies in the curriculum, it provides what I think is an overly positive view of certain historical events and figures. My degree is in history and it is a subject about which I am very passionate so I have found this curriculum to not be challenging enough even for my 6th grader.
Kristin A Smith I am Christian and don’t shy away from religion but I want my children to know a true history, the good, the bad, and the ugly. I do believe that the winner writes the history books so it would be nice to find something as non bias as possible but still interesting enough to keep kids engaged.
Hi! I know this is an older video but maybe someone could help me out! I know one of your points was enjoying it wasn't a 5 day course. However, do you think it would be possible to acheive doing book 1 and 2 in the same school year? That would make it 4 days a week if i am understanding correctly. OR did you find it took you more than 2 days a week to complete one book? Thanks in advance!
I'm sure you already figured something out here, but just in case. I just watched a video by Our Blessed Life, in which she recommends just that - 1 & 2 in one year, and then 3 & 4 the next year for the full credits.
Do you plan to continue to use it throughout the end of grade 12? I'm hoping to use it when we finish SOTW but I'm wondering if it will be challenging for older grades.
Thanks for your review on this! I’ve been really curious about your thoughts on it. My views on too much history are similar - we’ve done Sonlight & a few others that had a lot of reading - and we love reading! - but it can get overwhelming. My question is about your soon-to-be 7th grader. What will you do (if anything) to beef up her work? Or do you feel that it’s enough as is? If I remember correctly the worksheets only go up to 6th grade? I’ll have a 6th grader this coming year, so I’m just thinking about what I might do through middle school. Thank you for all your hard work! I always enjoy your videos!
krivard23 I’ll be using the same curriculum. And since I didn’t even learn history until high school I’m not too worried about making it more difficult, though I will probably have her do some additional reading
Grace and Grit That makes good sense! I don’t remember any history from school, either. I’d be happy for my kids to just have a good general understanding of History vs an in-depth knowledge until at least high school. Thanks for replying!
Since this curriculum is through 6th grade, will you also be using it for your 7th grader next year? I wanted to use this next year, but my girls will be in 7th and 5th.
This history curriculum is for all the way through high school. The lessons in the manual are for all ages. Additionally, each age group has specific Explorer pages of further material/assignments suited to that level of maturity and understanding. These are a pdf download that accompanies the course. My 9th-grade daughter is using this history at the 10-12 level and is loving it. (I'm Joanie. 😊 Our account shows up under my husband's name).
I realize this video is 2 years old but thank you so much for these reviews. I'm considering TGATB history myself and you saying, 'im not a historian. Public education history didn't stick for me" made me chuckle because I feel the exact same way!

Amanda S exactly!!!! My kids loved the golden goblet and that was a challenging read!
We are LOVING the history course. I just started it with my 4 (almost 5) year old and she’s hooked-as am I!
Thank you so much for this video!! I’ve been praying about using The Good & The Beautiful since last year. Finally started their Language Arts in January. Jen Newsham you’re welcome❤️❤️
This is perfect timing! I'm looking into this for next year and I will have 6th, 5th, 3rd and 1st grader as well.

Afroditi C we enjoyed the books!
Love it when i wake up to a new TGTB video from you! 😁
Madeline Cedillos awe thankyou!!!❤️
We’ve absolutely loved it, too!! I have a 9 and 7 year old doing this and it has been so fulfilling. We tried too hard to go full on Charlotte Mason last year and we’re burnt out from all the reading. I have enjoyed so much learning beside them. Megan that means a lot!
Love this!! My oldest is 4 so I'm planning to do themes for social studies for K-1 and start TGTB history maybe when she is in 2nd grade. I truly don't remember learning history until high school and like you said, it just didn't stick with me.

I loved hearing your reflection!
This was perfect timing! I was looking into this history program for next year. Thank you for the review. It looks awesome!! I remember you saying in a previous video that you do one unit of history and then take a break from history and do a science unit? Has that still been working for you?
Rachel Thomas great!

I'm so intrigued by TGATB. Do you use strictly that curriculum or do you incorporate others? I'm hoping to get to a homeschool convention soon and get to see it all in person. So happy I found your videos ❤
I got this curriculum at Marketplace. Do you know if I can still access the audios?
We will be using this next year so very excited! Love your videos! Off topic, you have shared a book that you use that is Church a history.. how do you utilize that book or incorporate?
Erin D yes we read that as apart of our bible time, but it obviously is history. It’s linked on amazon and fabulous!
Thanks!
**Also, with history (and science), would I have to buy 2 for my 1st and 3rd graders? Or just one?
each day has a portion that says read to child and gives steps of what to complete
buy 1 and make copies
I think in an earlier video you mentioned alternating science and history units. Are you still doing this, or have you gone back to doing both subjects each week, just on different days?
Lisa Lewis I was wondering the same thing! We have been doing TGTB History yr 1 also and have been alternating units. We’ve found it easier that way.
I was alternating, except for when I did the safety unit, because that was so light we did both.

Diary of a Homeschool Mama Thankyou!
Thank you for your honest review, I was wondering about the perfect ages to use this curriculum, very helpful, thanks so much 😃👍
Would you say this curriculum is something you can repeat every few years?
Yes just think about how much u remember from history? Like most of us prob not much so it’s beneficial to use it over again at different ages to get it instilled in their memory
I have a 1st through 5th grader and they have a hard time sitting through the history read aloud. How often do you read these books?
We’ve been doing Sonlight *light and yes it can be ALOT. Do you still like to add in some books from Sonlight? Or would that be too much?
Would the Sonlight readers and read-alouds work with this curriculum? As long as they went with the time period you are studying of course.
Rose Burke surely
So will you be doing TGTB History this new school year again?
Ashlee did you find this to be a "traditional" history curriculum or would you say it includes people of color, women, etc
Thank you for this review. I hope to use this program next year! Also what are you planning on doing next year since you will have one in 7th grade? Will they do something different? Or do you think it's good for 7th too?
Homeschooltable I think it’s great for 7th. Some 6th graders are 12 and some 7th are. To me grade doesn’t really matter.
Did you guys read the golden goblet? We have it but the wording seems a little advanced?
How would this history work from a secular point of view. We use TGATB for language arts and love it and have even used some of the science units. As a background we are not against our kids learning about Christianity, we just want to make sure they are exposed to a global/ world view, etc....
New to homeschooling, looking for some seasoned advice... If I am doing year 1 history this year with my 3rd and 1st grader, would I move on to year 2 the following year? Or would I stick with year1 until they are a little bit older?
I also wondered how this works with different levels year to year. Like do you repeat with the younger kids if you run out of years or how that works
Hi! You mentioned read alouds, do they come with it or are they purchased separately?
OurSereneLife I believe you can order them from them or from another retailer or the library if you prefer
I’ll have a second grader and kindergartener next year. Do you think the recommended read aloud for each unit will interest those ages? I’m so excited to try this out next year. Thanks for the review!
Might be a bit heavy, I’d swap something out for the same time periods:)
I used this with my second grade daughter. The first read aloud was too heavy for her so we read The Boy of the Pyramid instead and she liked that, however, I stopped using the curriculum after the first unit because I would read all the lessons and stories and she would just tell me that she really didn’t understand any of it.
Okay so while you did history, you weren’t doing science? That would make sense. I do both all year.
I love this review! My oldest is 4, so I know we won’t need it for a bit, but I was just wondering when you would start with history and science? I know they have language and math for kindergarten
Heather Sapp 7-8
Thank you Ashlee! When can we purchase the multiplication song cd? My children need it!
Andrea Barber May! ❤️
good review , but i would of liked to see more of the course book and the lesson book.
Is there a curriculum you would recommend for middle school??
Kristin A Smith is there a curriculum you would recommend for middle school??
Mama Karaba, are you looking for a Religious or non-religious curriculum?
I’ve been excitedly waiting for this review 😁
cmddavis Davis ❤️❤️❤️
Do you plan to continue to use it throughout the end of grade 12? I'm hoping to use it when we finish SOTW but I'm wondering if it will be challenging for older grades.
One Mama To Another I’m not sure. Just looking at each year as they come and deciding then. We loved it and it still works so we will use it again:)
I always enjoy your videos!
krivard23, there are worksheets for all ages, including high school.
Kristin A Smith Oh, great! Thanks for letting me know. 😊
krivard23, you’re welcome!
krivard23 I’ll be using the same curriculum.
We're using History Year 1 this fall!
We are doing this this year. 😍
Level 1 what ages group is it really for and when do you go to level 2 or does it matter what grade they are in
Mommy & Son there’s no age difference you just want to start with level one so the cycles through history make sense.
Can you use this for a 7th grader? My oldest is going into 7th, but the rest of my crazies are in grades 1-6.
Yes :)
You mentioned in one of your videos that the Bible is referenced in the history. What version of the Bible is used?
Probably the king james version
Since this curriculum is through 6th grade, will you also be using it for your 7th grader next year? I wanted to use this next year, but my girls will be in 7th and 5th.
Carey Robbins yes I will!
Perfect review! 1st year for me too and I feel the EXACT same way!
Jennifer Jones so glad you’ve enjoyed it!
Would this be okay to use with a 3rd grader you think? Considering this for my youngest next year.
Yes! Great fit!
@@GraceandGrit awesome! I have struggled so much this year finding what works and nothing is!! So I'll definitely be checking this out.
Thank you for sharing this.
Do you feel like there is enough diversity in this? I am asking this coming from a multiracial family. Thank you!
Is this mostly American history.
Thank you! 💖
Love it!! ❤️❤️❤️
Can you use it for high school as well?
