Thank God you recorded for Motown Brenda! Otherwise we wouldn't have these wonderful songs of yours that we still listen to over 50 years later! Love you!
1967......dynamite song by a beautiful young lady. Brenda, Motown messed up your contracts, their loss ! Keep on singng to your heats content !! I'll keep listening to you and Mary Wells !!
Loved listening to this song, growing up in Detroit. My older brother had the 45 and I played it all of the time after he enlisted in the Navy (I wasn't allowed to touch his records before then). Another example of a Motown Singer who didn't get the attention and recgnition she deserved, especially after all of the focus shifted to The Supremes and then Diana Ross. Great memories!!
I've never heard music like this before. Its soul music, but then it's now. It has elements of classical, jazz and soul. this is the best. truly something special!
People take entertainers as Role Models today. I didn't but, I was a huge fan. Saw Brenda at the Regal with my first boyfriend. As a teen, I was a huge fan of Brenda and her best friend at Motown, Mary Wells. Honestly, they were essentially why I loved Motown. They were awesome singers, the sharpest, the cutest. I just wanted to sing and dress like them LOL. Brenda is still kicking I hear and I'm so happy she is. God rest Mary Wells. Always missed.
that's amazing you say that, because that's what I thought too when I first saw this. Also there is a cd cover, "The Very Best Of Brenda Holloway." I saw the cover and I swear, the photo of her looks amazingly like it was taken in this decade- it's not a typical 60's type of pose. Brenda was maybe just too hot for Motown to get a handle on. If you doubt it, check her out on the Shindig! knock-off show where she's singing "When I'm Gone." She's in this leather outfit that'll melt your skin!
@TheMidcoast1 From what was told to me by a former band director of one of Motown's " SUPER GROUPS" back in 1983, she lived in Detroit for awhile then relocated back to Calif and was/is married to a minister .Again I have to add this information was tendered over 25 years ago.Where ever she is I would pay top dollar to see her.At age 64 she still looks good !!! Look at her eyes.... WOW !!!
I heard this song on her anthology and thought it was a unreleased jewel; I shocked to see that it was actually a song and video that was released; this just might be my favorite Brenda Holloway song!
@motownfan3 Thanks motown for the response. Thz lady's got the smooth Motown swagger down to the T. She had such stage presence. Just think where the surpremes could have gone post Diane or prior to had she been the lead singer. I can jam to this song today. It has that driving force that all the good Motown songs had back then. Wonder if she lived most of her life in Cali or Det.?
Digestif Yes she was located in LA and most of her songs were recorded in LA during her Motown days. That was one of the reasons she left Motown. She felt that Gordy did not take care of LA singers very much. But some of her songs were reording in Detroit. (Her voice was recording in LA later.) As far as I know, this is one of a few songs which was recorded in Detroit. And this song was written and produced by Frank Wilson.
pathorne2 Not "lot of" songs. I have Motown single collection CD set imported from USA, the liner notes indicate that many of her songs instruments were recorded in LA. This is one of the few songs which were recorded in LA (of course, her voice was recorded in LA). On the ohter hand, as you know, many of Supremes' songs were recordend in LA, and their voices were recorded in Detroit. Please read Nelson Gerge's "Where Did Our Love Go: The Rise and Fall of the Motown Sound" . It quotes her last letter to Gordy. (I read Japanese translated version.)
Martha Reeves, Gladys Knight, and Brenda Holloway were the best female singers at Motown. Ms. Holloway got in the way of the "Diana" onslaught and it is a shame. In addition, according to legend she was a religious girl and resisted Gordy's advances and her fate was doomed. Still one of the best!
It was my generations type of "Pop" I think. That was Berry Gordy's intention...to cross over to pop. It certainly was not major Soul at all and it did have elements of Jazz, so your definition is what I would almost say! =) Nice observation.
Doesn't she look good. I would love to see her too. As a kid, I remember the feeling of seriousness whenever hearing the song " Every Little Bit Hurts" on the radio.Seems like everything would come to a halt when that record would play. Your friend's account is probably true b/c she seems to have obtained that Motown "thing" you know that cool, smoothness laced with rhythm and style that seems to come natural with many Detroiters. Believe me... I know the difference...I am proud to be a native.
All i have to say is she should have been the replacement for diana ross when she left the supremes. I heard this song on the radio last week, It was a suprise thought radio forgot about this song.
hmm... "love is here and now you're gone"??? i think not... not even the same arrangement. this is more brassy and syncopated, the supremes song is actually just 4/4 H-D-H stomp rhythym with drums dropping out at certain points.
brenda,.even that name,.along with sheila,.sheena...ummmmmmm.this woman was and still is finer than fine,.her husband boyfriend....got to know what he has.but chances are.he is probably.a no good..brenda is lovely
Thank God you recorded for Motown Brenda! Otherwise we wouldn't have these wonderful songs of yours that we still listen to over 50 years later! Love you!
WOW! This is my all time FAVIORITE Motown/HDH son. It is great to finally see Brenda do this.
Thanks

@TheMidcoast1 Wikipedia says she was born 6/21/1946 in Atascadero,Calif.
Hope this helps you ! She is one great singer !

The creme de creme of the Motown sound. You go Brenda
The music of my youth...sweet and sad like my life has been.
A GODESS...Brenda is still a very very beautiful lass...and what a voice

Brenda ROCKED!!

I love this call. It remind me of several past relationship.

I heard this song on her anthology and thought it was a unreleased jewel; I shocked to see that it was actually a song and video that was released; this just might be my favorite Brenda Holloway song!
I love her more! even in her 60's shes still a honey with a voice sweeter than honey!
The uniqueness of Motown. Listen to the right side you hear Benny Benjamin and on the left is Pistol Allen.
This is a timeless track!

Reading a transcript of an interview it was Ms Holloways decision to
be based in LA (as opposed to Detroit where it was all happening ?).
whoa so are you saying that the funk brothers did the instrumentals for a lot of her songs even though she was in la?

I'm sure she went to Detroit sometimes, but really the Funk Brothers probably laid down the instrumentals in Deroit and it was flown to LA.
That woman is gorgeous! She could have easily been Diana's replacement with that voice, look and stage presence.
When she goes "hooah!" at 1:46, my knees go weak.
ONE WORD=CLASS
i totally agree with you.
Great song, written by the same team that wrote "Up The Ladder To The Roof" for The Supremes and "It Must Be Love" by Alton McClain & Destiny.
if your feeling down give this song a blast , youll soon be foot tapping then youll be dancing around . youll love it .
Voce stupenda! e che musica... *****
She was singing live
Classic.
Reminds me of the song "Love is here and now youre gone" by the surpremes. Does anyone know if Brenda was born in Detroit? I heard Cali.
She should have been the replacement for Diana Ross in the Supremes, she really got shafted. Great Song ....,
THE BEST FEMALE SINGER AT MOTOWN !
It was my generations type of "Pop" I think. That was Berry Gordy's intention...to cross over to pop. It certainly was not major Soul at all and it did have elements of Jazz, so your definition is what I would almost say! =) Nice observation.
too original for motown great song Fantastic singer SOULFUL
For real? Wow. Who knew!
wish i still have the 45
Nice!! :)

one of the earliest disco songs
man i thought it was me...it is totally true.and incredible.......dont know bout the amy thing..but man..oh man.thats all i can say..
fantastic voice and much under used at Motown I gather because she was difficult to work with - who cares with that voice!!!!
Anyone knows who played bass on this one? Doesn't sound like Jamerson and afaik Brenda was LA anyway.
This sounds like another song? A Supremes later song ? Which one is it ?
Sounds like Carol Kaye on the left bass track and Bob Babbitt on the right.
All i have to say is she should have been the replacement for diana ross when she left the supremes. I heard this song on the radio last week, It was a suprise thought radio forgot about this song.
@motownfan3 California girl.....
She use to baby sit me.
