      My favorite is still;
      DMC1: Dante is strong because of Vergil.
      DMC2: Dante is sad because of Vergil.
      DMC3: Dante is pissed because of Vergil.
      DMC4: Dante is happy because of Vergil.

    So, devil breakers actually ARE infinite use, but if you get hit while using them, they break instantly, additionally, you can overload them by holding the b or circle button, to unleash a super powerful attack that breaks it after, but if you JUST use their basic ability, and don't get hit, they last forever.

    • @Totallyarealhuman2210
      @Totallyarealhuman2210 Рік тому +16

      I remember seeing someone beat the final boss with only one overture. Sure they had the priveledge of DT, but iirc the player used the breaker lots, timing it so it won't break.
      So it's completely possible to go through any of Nero's campaign with only one breaker througout the whole mission. You just need to time it right and not accidentaly break/overload them.

  • @hoppyman11
    @hoppyman11 Рік тому +382

    Fun fact: The Devil breakers were made like that by choice. Itsuno said that he felt being able to swap the devil breakers would make Nero's combat feel too similar to Dante, so you had to make decisions of when to expend them for major damage.

    • @OneTrueNobody
      @OneTrueNobody Рік тому +141

      @@AlexanderMartinez-kd7cz I wouldn't call it a stupid decision, exactly. It does sacrifice some player freedom in versatility for a more tactical resource-management element, though, and the Break Away mechanic was actually meant to be a stand-in for Nero's Devil Trigger explosion effect (which was a key part of his skill game in DMC4) until he gets his Devil Trigger back. Thing is, gamers are famously cowards when it comes to consumable resources and will jealously hoard things instead of actually using them. So some players just never get into the rhythm of how the Devil Breaker system is supposed to be used.

    I think the reason that you can’t switch devil breakers is because the developers want players to be more comfortable with breaking them to get to the one you want to use wether it’s manually breaking them or holding the circle button to use the devil breakers super attack.

      @mattappl3119 Рік тому +35

      I have a similar theory, I think with Nero being the starting character he needed the simplest combat system to master, thus switching between 8 breakers would be an overcomplication to his kit. The idea of breaking them though is still super awesome as it provides a risk/reward.

    9:40 in the visions of v book it actually reveal that Vergil just wants to fight Dante, not to the death, just sparring. Really wish that was more obvious in game. it kinda there at the beginning with both them seemly happy to fight one another and also a bit tragic seeing as Vergil just wants to fight while Dante is out to kill. It is basically a reverse of the final fight of dmc3. i would highly recommend the visions of v because it goes more into Vergil and V's character. it just a shame that in a book not in the game. thank you to whoever is reading this and have a nice day or night.

      Even without reading the novel I could always tell that this was the case. I mean they both know that the other is practicality immortal and insanely durable so they can just go all out in each other when they fight. I never got the vibe that they actually wanted to kill eachother. It's just how I would imagine twins with demonic heritage to act with each other. Dante and Vergil's relationship kinda reminds me of Baki and Yujiro Hanma, they communicate through fighting and combat.

    Correction: breakers do not break "over time", they break either if you're hit mid-use, if you manually break them (which also acts as an escape from hitstun or grabs), or when you use their charged attack, which is usually some overpowered variant on their normal attack that comes at the cost of that breaker.

      I'd recommend checking out the upcoming Genokids for you, as it's a character action/hack-and-slash type game with a lighter tone to it. Got some cool stuff going with being able to swap on-the-fly between characters with different movesets, to do stuff like many different combos or immediately jumping out of a knockback.
      Perhaps a game from earlier this year too by name of Clash: Artifacts of Chaos. It's not so much a character action game as it is a 3D over-the-shoulder brawler in an interconnected world. It's set in a bizarre, stone age-like land called Zenozoik filled with equally bizarre, monstrous creatures.
      Main character Pseudo's kind of stoic at first, but over the course of the game he has some fun insults to his enemies and little teases to his companion.
      Solid game in a colourful and imaginative world.
      Soulstice is a game i would also want to mention to spread the word about. For it's a game that i really like and is quite good, but it's rather serious in tone. Most humor there comes from some dry wit and sarcasm between the main two characters (named Briar and Lute) and their on-field superior Layton.
      (I personally jive more with the tone and characters in Soulstice compared to HFR, but HFR's praise is definitely deserved)
      Soulstice has got its high points, low points, interesting points and points that could be improved upon, and stuff in-between. And i'd love for it to gain enough traction for an even better sequel.
      Regardless of tone, i'm hoping here with you for more fun, cool and interesting hack-and-slash/character action games to be made reality in the future.

      @xXBROYIXx It was covered in Visions of V, yes, but it's not what op described.
      After DMC1, Vergil managed to escape and rid himself of Mundus' influence, but his years of torture and battle under Mundus left him on the verge of death. He went to get Yamato and used it to cut away his human "shell" (maybe so his demon self could heal properly? Maybe cuz he veiwed his humanity as a weakness? I'm not sure if they ever properly explained.) But he also separated the nightmares that haunted him from his time as Nelo Angelo, aka V and his familiars.
      They realized they needed to team up in order to survive, but the Phantom nightmare was just a bit too much like the original, and refused to submit to a human, so they killed him.

There are points in the campaign where you can see another character in one of their fights (or even fight with them in two cases). But those aren't just pre-recorded fights by the devs, they can very well be either recorded gameplay from another player or an actual live player playing at the same time you are, but you have to have an online connection for it to happen (otherwise you just get recorded gameplay from the devs).

    DMC5, what a freaking game. Nero feels like the cockiness of reboot Dante was siphoned into our devil arm boy, the haircut change really suggested it too. But honestly, given how easily he would blend in with Dante, I like the bigger distinction between them. Honestly, even with less exploration in the worlds, I think the replay value in S ranking and revisiting levels lends itself better to making the game a high point of the franchise. 5th time is a charm, they hit it out of the park. I forget where I saw it, but I remember seeing an interview with Itsuno talking about the decision to make the Devil Breakers work the way they did. If I remember, the basic idea is that in testing, they realized that if you could just swap on the fly, players would exclusively use between 2-3 breakers without experimenting with others, and they ran into a dominant strategy problem with fight balancing. Basically if you could stop time with Ragtime without consequence and then swap out to something like Helter Skelter to demolish shields, then the difficulty was simply trivialized. So they made the breakers consumable and made it to where you couldn't swap, and that forced players to adapt and made encounters more varied in how players would approach them. I was definitely skeptical about the decision at first but have really come to like how it was implemented because... well, I do the exact thing they tried to avoid with Dante. I have a singular load out that I use for every fight, and have stuff that I *only* use for specific enemies. Balrog only comes out when one of the teleporting Chaos guys are in play because the damage aura you get while jumping is just the easiest way for me to time parries.

    I actually really disagree on the "Rollercoaster" analogy for this series. You are never anywhere near done after just one playthrough. Hell, you unlock Nero's full moveset at the end of the game. The point of giving ranks is to incentivize getting better. You are chasing those S ranks on harder difficulties. And it's way easier in 5 since you aren't graded on Orbs found or Time anymore.

      Never watched Dragon Ball myself, so that reference is lost on me. The name Qliphoth itself comes from the Kabbalah, a branch of Jewish esoteric mysticism.
      It has a concept called "The Tree of Life" that is often shown as a chart with interconnected nodes called Sefirot, and deals with stuff like the Lord/all that is good keeping itself existing through heavenly emanations (those being the Sefirot).
      There's ten Sefirot total, and the Qliphot are the negative opposites to the Sefirot.
      So to turn that "Tree of Life" that acts as an eternal engine of existence into a literal tree, only with the negative opposites, is quite cool.
      Fun extra mythological trivia: The Nidhogg parasites take their name from Norse mythology, referring to a kind of dragon who eternally chews and gnaws at the roots of the Tree of Life.
      Fitting name for a parasite that feeds on a mythological tree like that.

    You mentioning Bayonetta 3 and the small comparison between Nero and Viola made me realize both why that game is dissatisfying in many areas and why despite everything, I like viola as a character more than I do Bayonetta: it’s because she gives a shit about the lore, whereas Bayo and the game itself does not.
    For a lot of the time, Bayonetta acts and feels like she could not care less about the stakes of the world. I know that’s part of her appeal, but her indifference makes her feel detached from the world around her, like the cataclysmic stakes are no big deal to her. And in turn, the games don’t really explore the world around her, and things just kinda happen and then we move on. No exploration to things like Luka actually being a descendant of the fairy king or the lumen island city or how singularity…exists in the state that it is, because it doesn’t matter to her, and by extension, it shouldn’t matter to us the audience, which never sat right with me.
    Viola, on the other hand, does have an emotional investment in what’s going on. She does care about the people around her, and does recognize that her situation is very serious. At least to me, it makes her more connectable as a character, and far more of a hero than Bayonetta. I agree that she doesn’t feel ready to be the solo hero of the series from here on out, but I would like to see more of her all the same.

    They also explain Virgil and V to some extent in a manga or something. The story is deeper than the surface level Virgil split himself in two and needed to rejoin his demon half, but I can't even recall much from the video I saw.
