I have a timing problem. I started Cuban salsa 9 months ago, 3 month after a friend then wanted a Partner to do Cross body Salsa so I agreed thinking ok I can learn both. It turned out the Cross body is on 2 (contra tempo). So I've been doing both & I pick up the moves really quick & have a good technique but my timing sucks in both. I am getting tired of the Cross body instructors telling me off for going off beat, when I sense they’re looking at me I immediately go off beat, go blank & mess up every. I told my Cuban Salsa teacher who doesn't really bother about timings , just technique & moves. He's been teaching for 30 years & said don't worry just attend more socials. Another instructor told me just stick to on 1 give up on 2 which doesn’t come naturally. So I am seriously thinking about giving up the on 2 Cross body but to be honest I like both, I like the freedom & excitement of Cuban salsa but also like the smooth style of Cross body. I’m doing it for fun because I love Latin music but this timing thing is really pissing me off & I am losing confidence even in socials. I do Salsa 4 day’s a week. It’s not as if I cannot find the 1 , I find it easy to find the beat(so I think) I don’t know how why or when I go off beat. So Should I quit Crossbody, has anyone experienced the same?

Thanks for the video, it's always been harder for me to find the first beat on the dance floor 🙄 than ... on the sofa with a beer 😌.🍺

Learn timing with easy songs, not all songs are equal. For me I used "la vida es un carnaval" by Celia Cruz. Very easy to find 1. I have music studies... I am a piano and organ player and I could not find 1 on most salsa songs!!!!

I'm currently learning on2 (NY Eddie Torres), and as a lead i find it especially tough when the conga and clave aren't prominent. The number of times i then have to rely on an experienced follower to get my footwork synched on2 does end up as a "swallow your pride" moment.

Oh I understand that completely, but it's important to understand that hearing music takes time, it will happen, just sometimes not as quick as we would like 😉. You doing a right thing, it will come 💓

Thanks Rasa! The key is listening to a lot of music, the problem is some people don't even like salsa but still want to dance to it, so ... that's that. For some people with like 0 rhythm... maybe suggest them a different dance that is easier to pick up?
For a future video could I ask you your opinion on level progression in classes please? I'm having a problem at the moment:
Dance academy with progressive levels, 'cuban salsa' although sometimes it looks veeery slot like. UK city. 'Improvers class' after beginners 1 and 2.
Everyone is progressing, literally EVERYONE :(
At least 4 girls could not even respond to a 'dile que no'. A few could not dance in rhythm/tempo (which reminded me of this topic). Same problem is being reported by followers about some of the leads too.
Result: all the 'intermediates' or people that not only go to classes but also socials and are the 'heart' of the scene... are not enrolling in the next course because they think it is a waste of time.
At what time should I start complaining? I am a beginner that has done a lot of social dancing etc., so I feel I'm not in the right place to complain because I have a lot to learn but at the same time when a few followers don't even follow the music, don't respond to enchuflas from different leads not just me or some when I try to lead a 70..... is it my fault?
When to quit? (classes, not the dancing). Also how do teachers manage people that only go to classes mixed with the people that take an interest for the dance and start doing it a lot in socials etc thus advancing quicker.
I just signed up for 6 weeks and I fear it's going to be a waste of time :(
Salsa in my city is a bit of a mess and it's so sad.

Quiting classes is never a good option. You just might need to change the venue or teachers. Also, try to relax and focus on your progress , not just leading but footwork and body movement , so keep yourself progressing in a more various way. But quitting classes or complaining to people don't think will change anything. You can definitely suggest to the teacher to make a note to practice certain techniques more 😉.

@@DanceWithRasa in the end I did 6 weeks more. Lots of people dropped so the class was a bit less crowded. Still not very happy with the teaching so I am going to try a different teacher. The problem is that here we don’t have much choice :( (Cardiff, UK) but we’ll keep going 💪
