I've often wondered why a mechanism isn't incorporated in the wheels/axles to somehow spin the wheels up to speed when landing. It would certainly extend tire life, and perhaps lessen the possibility of blow-outs. I know there's a good reason. The weight and complexity of these components might be the reason.
yes it’s cuz if they are spinned up first that requires extra motors on all wheels which will certainly add to the cost, weight and size of the wheels. Also tires still won’t last as long as they have to be in order to make this mechanism worthy.
Roland Doucet Also, a airplane tire can be used 500 times before it wears out, which is already really good for something that hits the ground at 170 miles per hour while carrying the weight of a gigantic plane
@@demidragon8111 Adding to this: Also the fact that it can be used 500 times, Landing gear tires on a specified aircraft only get changed every week or longers or so depending on when the tire is used
Another reason they dont is that spinning up all those stationary wheels from rest absorbs a lot of energy and slows the plane down somewhat, apparently they can leave 30lbs of rubber behind in the process but they still last for 100 landings before needing to be re-treaded, they are super thick and can be re-treaded several times
The first 747 really waited to extend. He was only 30 sec from touchdown before dropping the undercarriage. Some pilots will do this if they think they may be going around due to traffic and some will do it to save fuel...usually only on cargo runs though.
Yeah, that was really late gear extension. Typically you'll want to be fully configured and all checklists complete, stable and on speed by no lower than 1000' AGL. This was a bit lower...
Excellent! Who would have guessed that watching planes land, from the perspective of the landing gear, could be so interesting. Or maybe I'm just a massive aviation nerd.

Yeah
Ikr!
Love it, all the power being absorbed by those wheels, just incredible.
Those wheels are held on by a couple bolts. That in itself is amazing.
I bloody love planes. From their wing tips to their wheels!
Ye bloody don't love the top?
What about that bloody fuselage?
The 747 is an amazing flying machine. I hope it never gets retired!
.......and then it did.
@@southwest3671 no it didn't, plenty are still flying, there will be cargo 747-8s flying for the next 40-50 years

Maybe because gyroscopic forces can mess with the planes' stability.

1:55 why does the landing gear is down in mid air. I mean, i know it is descending but it is still above the clouds...
Maybe for Airshow or commercial
Cuz kinda look like 787
No they are about 2500 feet from ground and is approaching the runway
Because they are about to land
altitude doesn't damage the landing gears, airspeed does. Even if you are at FL350, if you have appropriate speed, nothing will cause harm to them.
The plane is slow enough to deploy the gears
