Even when Derek doesn't play slide, his style still sounds like his playing slide. Really love his unique style; most guitarist go a lifetime trying to find that uniqueness only to have it elude them. Very enjoyable video of a couple talented guitarists... Warren just gets better with age. Thanks for posting!
The first time I heard this solo I nearly shit my pants. It was amazing. Who ever said good music and rock is dead has lost their ever loving mind. What do call this? Just a masterful arrangement. You can't explain this you just have to experience it. Enjoy Life! Keep Jammin!
Hey dude, I agree for the time, but this was 12 years ago now and I’m fairly sure good music is pretty much dead now. The only place we get quality soulful solos these days is from Brent on every other Mastodon album if we’re lucky.
Derek Trucks has risen above comparisons. He has something most guitarists never find, a truly unique ,instantly recognizable voice. I won't compare him to anyone, but his peers include Clapton, SRV, Carlos Santana, Jimi Hendrix, Keith Richards,Jeff Beck and everyone else who you can recognize in a half-dozen notes. May God give him a VERY long career!
The depths this kid goes to is unreal. Hell even when he switches to his slide, when he reaches down with his left hand he drops in a couple notes tapping with his right hand on the fretboard, like they need to be there. Every note has a purpose and a presence. That's the difference when it comes to the great ones. They know the notes, they live in them, they understand them and where they belong and don't belong.
Warren... there's just no words. I remember seeing Trucks many years ago and thinking to myself "I could do that". boy has he come along. He kept practicing, I did not. But if you spent your time in the company of The Greatest Guitar Player Ever!!! You'd probably be good by now too. When I say Warren has talent, it's like saying the sun has heat. Mule is my anchor. The one thing I know I will always be passionate about. Hell, I'd give up my motorcycle before I give up the MULE!!!!!!! You know the battle cry. You've heard it on every live disc, if you youtubed this on purpose you've probably yelled it yourself till you couldn't anymore. From the gut with me, and cry it out like you're Braveheart and it's your last breath... MULE!!!!!!!!!
+Mike Stangel Warren is awesome, I agree. Seeing him again in Kentucky next month, saw him with Mule last year and he killed it! Seeing Gregg A. this friday! Definitely my favorite song/solo from this album though. I've only watched this show like a billion times.......
pls tell me you've at least seen the real mule with allen woody. if your talking about post woody mule then you are kidding yourself. mule without woody is pretty lame.
Good story. Here in Salem Oregon they have a music store with lots of insturments. Warren came in and ask if he could hook up one of the guitars there. The owner knew who he was and of course said yeah! The owner said he started playing and everyones jaw dropped. Then everyone holding a guitar slowly sat it down and walked away as if "I have no business even trying". lol He said it was amazing.
Warren has got it, I can feel that in my soul. Dicky wrought him in, there hasn't been any looking back. Thankyou Warren, God Bless, the best of health........ Patrick
I was there when they played the Beacon in 2003- it could have been that very show. The music was amazing from start to finish. "Security" was a bunch of old guys (like me) with pony tails, and they wanted to confiscate my cell phone because I took a couple of photos (I left the flash on and all you can see on the images is thick smoke). While I was negotiating to retain my camera, lit joints were being passed all up and down the aisle, right around and beneath us. Good clean fun!
For those that said this band wasn't the same without Dickey Betts, you loose. Derek Trucks has been playing with The Allman Brothers Band on stage since he was 14. He grew up with them, listened and learned. Trucks and Haynes are amazing together.
Derek's just like Gregg. No expression on his face, all his emotions come out of the instrument. Gregg can sing with such passion and the look on his face is blank.
Soy Sauce look soy sauce, you are barking up the wrong tree here! Of course Tosin Abasi is a ridiculous guitarist in his own right, but so are Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes.. And I'm they all would be blown away by each other's talents. Derek couldn't play like Tosin, but Tosin couldn't play like Derek either.
Soy Sauce that was the dumbest comment I've ever seen in my life. Go watch another video. Completely different music genresand playing style. Actually that comment was the most irrelevant thing to this video.
IT'S SO SAD THAT THERE ARE PEOPLE I HAVE TOLD THEY NEED TO LISTEN TO THIS IF THEY WANT TO HEAR PERFECTION AND GOD GIVEN TALENT. AND THEY RESPOND LIKE WANTS SO GOOD ABOUT IT. SOME PEOPLE ARE JUST STUPID.
You know as different as all these guys play.If you could take this recorded sound back 35 years and play it for someone.they would say when did the Allman brothers record this.
I agree that it's not so much the actual notes, but rather ones approach to phrasing. I guess it's a bit like talking. How many great and famous speeches use pretty simple words and messages but are delivered in a way that directly connects with people. I think that's what Coltrane was striving for
Seriously though, Derek's solo is peerless and deserves to be regarded as one of the very best guitar solos of all time....almost as good as Clapton's I shot the sheriff at the Crossroads a few years back, which I regard as No.1
I respect your opinion, but I strongly disagree. This solo did absolutely nothing for me, and Clapton doesn't tickle my fancy to say the least, but then again, I'm kind of a prog-head, so I guess I look for different things in my solos. Music is cool.
@@soysauce9296 Ditto, I never was a Clapton fan as a Guitarist. So many other past and present Great Guitarists out there with Talent. Seen here, Derek Trucks & Warren Haynes are Extraordinary Guitarists!
Slash? Really?! I hope you continue watching true greats like Warren and Derek. I think your vast understanding of music is only surpassed by your ability to recognize true talent.
I'm guessing because he likes the way it plays and sounds. Do you find something wrong with the tone he gets from that SG?? Because I find it to be amazing. BTW, Warren kicks ass on this, and how about Oteil on bass....damn!!!

I have to watch this at least once a day. This is my religion.
Thank god somebody finally found the best guitar solo ...I was gonna search for the best one for hours
No fast shredding, just good functional virtuosity... i like this!
Having been to countless shows, this was about the day in age where I walked away knowing Derek had reached Warrens level.
He's a magician (Derek I'm talking about). The switch to slide at 1.35 is almost quicker than the eye.
This IS on the beacon theater 2003 dvd. The song is Desdemona.
WARREN HAYNES always gives ya all of what he's got! WITH EVERY SONG HE EVER DOES!

Very cool just outstanding
This jazzy tune rocks. I feel nothing but good vibes running through me. The energy of this song and the works of Trucks and Haynes is amazing.
Great guitar, love this hypnotic jam

holy sh!t just holy sh!t what a jam, Warren is up there with any guitar player, they all just have there own style.
Two of the baddest men alive.... PERIOD!!!! End of fucking story!!!!
I used to watch this on repeat! Desdemona! Derek is other worldly and Warren is great too!
Good story. Here in Salem Oregon they have a music store with lots of insturments. Warren came in and ask if he could hook up one of the guitars there. I just do not understand how a human can remember how to do that!! When this guy is done he could play it again!!!! Come on man!!! Just outstanding.
Warren has got it, I can feel that in my soul. Dicky wrought him in, there hasn't been any looking back. Thankyou Warren, God Bless, the best of health........ Patrick
That's about how many times I've watched it and I concur.
they're sound is unbelievable, it gets me through the 9-5 forsure. True talent
the rhythm section absolutely kills it here! I love the studio version on Hittin' the Note.. The hi-hat beats cut through so nice.

I can hear Dave Brubeck: Take Five going on in this number, great playin by the way !
Just some of the very best !
Derek 's solo in this is defanantly one of the best solos ever
They're both beasts with their instruments. Very nice. Very.
Wow , Derek & Warren . . . Guitarists @ Work
All-around magnificent -- Derek as always excels, a good showcase of Warren's talents, and Oteile is in a class of his own on bass.
For those that said this band wasn't the same without Dickey Betts, you loose. Derek Trucks has been playing with The Allman Brothers Band on stage since he was 14. He grew up with them, listened and learned. Trucks and Haynes are amazing together.
I love the solo, but the rhythm section gets my thumbs up!!!!
Derek's just like Gregg. No expression on his face, all his emotions come out of the instrument. Gregg can sing with such passion and the look on his face is blank.
pure class...........no questions!

Where's the LOVE button...I more then like this !!!
Haynes ain't gotta take a backseat to ANY guitarist alive today period!
Tosin Abasi
Soy Sauce look soy sauce, you are barking up the wrong tree here! Of course Tosin Abasi is a ridiculous guitarist in his own right, but so are Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes.. @@soysauce9296 Ditto, I never was a Clapton fan as a Guitarist. So many other past and present Great Guitarists out there with Talent. Seen here, Derek Trucks & Warren Haynes are Extraordinary Guitarists!
