This was a good, sensible demonstration and evaluation of tools that helped me make a decision. Simply done without any unnecessary in-your-face attitude or out of place humor. You're well-spoken and do a good job detailing the pros and cons. Well done video.

Nite Ize Doohickey going strong on my keychain, I really like the laser engraved measurement on it, opens packages good and doesnt shred the pockets, I also use it as a mini carabiner.

I got mine cause it looked cool when I was standing in line at a Home Depot in 2014.. still on my keychain a decade later and gets used constantly.. killer buy. I’ve used on set screws a bunch of times but mainly breaking down boxes it works great for that.

Thanks for sharing your experiences. I have also ordered it. I hope the box cutting tip won"t poke in pockets.

On the shard you can use the bottle opener as a can opener. The fat side of the prybar is pointy enough to penetrate a can lid, and the curve works perfectly on normal cans.

Awesome video. I got Gerber Shard with a kit and had no idea what or why it was. Now I know what it is how to use it and how it stands up to other tools like it. I wish other videos on UA-cam were more concise and helpful as this.

Dude, excellent video! :D I've actually had my eye on all of these lil mini tools and haven't been able to yet decide on which one I want. I was leaning mostly towards the Mullet, and I'm glad it came out the winner in your video! I'll definitely be picking one of those up.

Like my shard. The pointy Philips end is enough to rip tape. The wire stripper end can also cut tape but sometimes the tape bunches up. Super small simple easy. I'd consider pairing w a doohickey for the hex. For now I have w Kershaw Cinder knife. I used to put a Gerber Dime, but it is so dense that it makes my whole set of keys unbalanced. But these kinda spread the weight better amongst the rest of the keys.

Great video. I've carried the Gerber Shard in my keychain for several years now, mostly because of the philips head screwdriver and bottle opener. The philips head has come in great use for things like tightening screws on potlids, changing bulbs on some lights, and tightening knobs on drawers. I've found that it's quite difficult to use, because the keychain hole is positioned right next to it, and it looks like the Mullet addresses that. The hex driver is a nice addition, since a hexbit doesn't take much space, and if it's something like a Torx, you can just keep it in your pocket. The belt loop idea shows great thought from Gerber: It's angled, so it won't push the belt loop material together and deform it over a long period of time.

    • @Factor85Labs
      @Factor85Labs  2 роки тому

The Mullet has a bit of that same issue with the keychain getting in the way of the prybar end, but it is less of a hassle than the Shard.

I bought a Gerber EVO Jr. - Plain Edge knife from Midway USA that came with a Black Gerber Mullet free, or nearly free. I haven't tried doing anything with the Mullet, but it's nice knowing I have the most useful tool of those 6. The knife was nearly impossible to flip open, even after I lubed it up and worked the blade back and forth several times. I finally loosened up the pivot pin tonight and got it working right. I had to take the pocket clip off to loosen the screw heads, and once I got it loose, I couldn't tighten it back up leven if I wanted to. One side is close to stripping out the Torx head, so it's a good thing I got it adjusted right the first time.

Been using the silver DoohicKey for almost 8 years now and I love it. So lightweight you can't feel it being there at all, but so functional. I primarily use it to open boxes and scratch stickers off, but it also comes in handy when I need a huge screwdriver-like device. I carried it with me everywhere and still do so.
Recently I purchased a DoohicKyey SkullKey to compliment it - it is way heavier and has no wrenches, but it has a screwdriver, which is arguably more useful, plus a scoring point (opener), serrated edge, a simple file and a bottle opener. I wear it on a dog tag chain on my neck, because it is also badass in a quirky way (or quirky ion badass way, you decide). I treat it mainly as a "fashion statement" and a "blisterbuster" in one package; I gotta tell you - I hate heat-sealed all-plastic clamshell blisters and this thing just deals with these with ease and even can file the sharp edges down a bit. I definitely recommend it. If the skull is too much, there is also QuickKey that has a regular knurled grip and a ClipKey that has a carabiner clip instead of skull and file.

@@Factor85Labs I'm a fan of most NiteIze... Gear? Equipment? Actually most of their stuff are uncapitalized "doohickeys". Their carabiners and S-Biners are pretty useful.

Very helpful, thank you! Initially, I was most interested in the Kershaw PT-2 because of the its range of functions, including a can opener, but, surprisingly, virtually NO videos of about ten ones I watched in a couple of days put it high enough! Maybe it needs some filing to make the scraper/nail puller and can opener sharper than they are now. Filing always helps, ha-ha. )

Nice review, nothing wrong with “unscientific” for me the first question is what do I actually want my keychain tool to do, what will I use it for a lot, and what will I hardly ever, if ever do with it and choose accordingly.

I chose my PT-1 because my priorities are: 1. bottle opener 2. pry bar 3. box opener. A bottle test would've shown that some of the options listed don't have a remotely functional opener.

Very good review, thanks a lot! I own the Mullet and the DoohicKey, which i carry with my keys. The Mullet has one thing i really hate - it's this "hook"-thingy. It's just annoying, like a fish-hook in your pocket. The DoohicKey is just lighter and fits much better in your pocket. Maybe they should change some things, then it would be perfect. The tin-opener would be a very "nice to have"!

I cant carry anything tool related in the prison I work in yet the Gerber Shard gets ignored when I walk in. its saved the day so many times opening paint, packages and generally doing things my bare fingers cannot. I wear it around my neck even in the shower, besides the black paint fading off not one bit of rust!

Isn't the point of mullet to hang your keys from it, instead of just keeping it with the keys in the pocket? (Either from a belt loop, or dangling inside the pocket?)

I got this clock from a doctor I used to work with. Back before 2008, drug company reps used to give away all sorts of swag to doctors and clinics. Pens, mugs, ties, clocks, candy, CDs, shirts, you name it and a pharma company would slap a drug name on. Nowadays the only place to find these is on eBay.
