So good to see this video. I'm on my 4th day with a shorter board and have been feeling like a complete beginner again, nothing works anymore and it's starting to get to me. But everytime I have this feeling I should position a little bit more towards the inside, which is exactly where I'm scared to be. It's very good to see this video confirming I'm not crazy and didn't lost all my skills all of a sudden, thank you!
Epic! So good to here to hear someone talk about what you see as you assess, take off on and ride waves. It's what its all about when we are out in the water. The best!!
roger, you're 100% right. all of surfing is your ability to read and perceive waves, and then react. I don't understand why this 1 MAJOR point isn't preached by more coaches. it is the INTEGRAL aspect of surfing.
this is great video as few admit that there's going to be some pain in surfing if u want to work ur way into bigger & faster...also that missing waves is part of the process / fun...well done!
This is exactly what I needed to hear and what I needed someone to articulate. I processed my best wave from yesterday afternoon and had thoughts like "I typically don't look at that section of the wave in front of me as I'm popping up." I most comfortable on longer equipment and trying to figure out this 5'10 fish
it's all about wave perception. surfing is REACTING to what we perceive. if all you perceive (look at) is bottom of the wave, in the flats, how could one ever react and intend to move towards the wall, the line, the pocket! take that feeling you had and keep finding that feeling! trust your body movement to get you where you're looking.
That's good content right there! I feel like most coaches neglect this subject because a) we're taking it for granted and never consciously think about it and b) it's very difficult to put into words, and on most beach breaks a novice won't see what you're talking about. While on point and reef breaks it's easier to show.
Awesome content. My problem is my take off: pop up still isnt consistent enough on a shortboard to get my feet to the exact same position. Bit better on a 7'0 because I have a little more room for error so I can still pop up straight into a pump with slightly off feet. But not on my 6'2...need more time in the water...
tomato, tuh-may-to, tuh-mah-to. typical american pronunciation of Maldives is Maal-deevz, whereas typical British European pronunciation is Mol-deevz, and other pronunciations are Maal-dyvez.... no side note needed :)

Eating it and getting slammed is part of the learning...would have liked to see the paddel out and a few waves
Great info...would have enjoyed seeing you catch a wave to demonstrate. Anyway, thanks for the tutorial.
its refreshing to hear the process that it is such a challenge to read and catch waves , he tells it like it is

Thanks mate! This is very valuable advice that I needed right now! 👏
you're welcome, glad to hear it's helpful.
This was a great video, I really needed this 🤙I ate a plate at the weekend but now I know I needed to, and this helped me to understand why
Super useful, thank you!! Kind of obvious now... :) Struggling a lot transitioning to 6'8" from small days on 9'1". Now know what to do!
just switched back to a short board, I like it more with this RIKT I put on the back for turning.

Best video ever !!
Great advice, it's totally true,
Super solid content. Thanks mate. (Side note: in the future maybe research how to pronounce the country you’re visiting)
