I used sandpaper to remove the black coating and when I got down to the rod itself, sparks flew...with just sand paper! I had to file down the edge of the striker to get better sparks. I always keep the striker right next to the tinder bundle and pull the rod back quickly so as not to destroy the tinder bundle. Sparks flew and the tinder lit right up!
I found out the hard way that the striker is the key for great sparks. Cheap fero rods work as good as expensive fero rods with a good striker. Firesteel.com's "Super Striker" is the best I have found ($1.97). An expensive rod works poorly with a junk striker.
csh 62 You are absolutely correct my friend,,striker is usable but basically junk, knife with sharp spine works great,or multi tool and yes you can buy designated striker,,I just use Mora LMF or Mora Kansbol, and I practiced a LOT,,I almost scraped whole rod..It's a LOT of fun...
Sorry, but that thing sucks. There was next to no spark compared to other sticks. When I'm outdoors and getting cold and hungry, I don't want to grind away at my steel for any longer than absolutely necessary. I suggest looking for a firesteel that will throw sparks like a crazy arsonist every single strike. Sure, you'll pay twice the price, but it'll cost you a small fraction of the time & hassle.
Daniel WW 😂 man,you don't know how to use it,,get yourself good striker or a knife with 90 degrees sharp spine, and take the coating off..There's absolutely nothing wrong with the Ferro Rod..So start practicing,it's all about practice, technique and there's only two types of rods..
Just ordered one from Amazon
