Thank you for not adding 15min of the history of video games to lengthen them like some fools do. I swear I’ve seen 18min videos for a game that was mentioned once in EGM and it’s 16min of ‘the nes is an 8bit…’.
The real magic of the Aladdin Deck Enhancer was that by unloading many of the necessary cartridge chips onto it, it could lower the cost of games by around half. I wish Nintendo would have done something like this because it could also increase quality and capability by having something like the MMC5 chip included.
Always enjoyed Super Robin Hood and the Dizzy games. No one ever knee what I was talking about. I'd say Camerica and Tengen released the best unlicensed NES games.
Another favorite of mine is Big Nose the Caveman. That was only released on gold cartridge at least in USA format. UK might've gotten it in pass-thru cartridge format like the Game Genie. I didn't think Bignose Freaks Out was as good as the first one. It lacked music in stages and was harder to control. The idea of a caveman on a skateboard was fun though. It just could have been implemented a bit better.
Sachen released some of the worst unlicensed NES games. Tagin' Dragon anyone? Master Chu was one of their better games, and the AVGN review of that game heavily featured 💩🥒.
I wonder how NES games would've shaked out if the Aladdin Deck Enhancer took off more. Would it have been the west's version of the Famicom Disk System?
Well, it was too little too late, by then, the SNES and Genesis were already out. But I kinda wish Nintendo had conceived the MMC5 adapter for the NES. The adapter would have contained the MMC5 chip and other components, while the compact cartridges would have only contained the ROM. The MMC5 chip had so much untapped potential, but for a standalone cartridge, it was too expensive to produce
Shipping just a single ROM chip on a board, and getting all the features of a UxROM board would have been really neat, no need to add RAM and Lockout. But then you enter the problem of mandatory peripherals, and cartridges that are dependent on that peripheral being present. Getting the "one chip" cartridge would happen a lot later with the VT02 and VT03 Famicom clones, which supported "OneBus" mode and integrated MMC3.
As terrible as it might be, the deck enhancer was such a missed oportunity. It was too little too late and didn't enhance anything but it could have been great for unofficial developers had it been released 5 years earlier. Specially with the chip shortage.
I just don't understand what's so "terrible" about the Aladdin Deck Enhancer (except for being terribly late to the market), I think the idea is great. Not only does it contain hardware to bypass NES lockout chip, it also contains extra RAM, which every game can use, without having to increase cost by adding it to the game cartridge itself.
Cool I have a couple of those games. Quattro Adventure has Boomerang Kid, Super Robin Hood, Treasure Island Dizzy and Linus Spacehead. One of those golden all in one carts.
I've always wondered why Nintendo didn't slap a superfx chip in a cart like the Aladdin deck enchancer, and then save the whole price of one chip per cart. They could have sold the games cheaper and still made more profit per cart 🤔
I grew up in the U.K. when Code Masters started doing serious business and the Oliver Twins were very much local heroes and near unknown worldwide. So it’s nice to hear an American voice cover their achievements.
I would have loved this as a kid; shame it never came out officially. I was really into simplistic colourful platformers like this, Kiwi Kraze, or Hudson's Adventure island back then and still am to a certain degree. Anyway, found the rom and put it on my phone for Retroarch. Plays very well.
It wasn’t a “terrible” accessory, just some of the games for it were and it came out too late. If somebody thought of this arrangement earlier, it probably would’ve caught on.
He talks about the limeline like this "They began programming from the ZX-80 to Dragon 32, to BBC and later licenced out to the NES". When talking about the NES games, he stated they were ports based on the Amstrad games, so there's the Amstrad reference at least.
Hey man, I just want to say I love watching your videos and you even inspired me to resurrect my channel! Great work! Your videos are perfect for me to watch on my lunch breaks. That being said, I love collecting unlicensed games for the NES and I also have a copy to one of the Dizzy games! Thanks for the inspiration!
8:20 Not gonna lie, I'm kinda surprised at how diverse Pogie's design is from the derpy goofball on the cover to this Taz-looking character. Kinda cute.
Have the Super Robin Hood and the first three Dizzy games on C64 cassette, and just like the NES, the C64 has hardware scrolling that is unused by all of them. They do at least make use of hardware sprites, which isn't a feature of the Spectrum hardware they were originally made for. For Super Robin Hood, whilst having the "HELP ME ROBIN!" voice sample at the start was impressive, the mechanics sucked big time. Having to walk along moving platforms manually should be considered a crime. Dizzy were really great games that really should've utilised the keyboard for using items. Fun fact on the PAL version of Fantastic Adventures; it was an Deck Enhancer cart, but a cart that looked like a Game Genie and piggybacked an official cart to use the 10NES chip from that. Same went for Micro Machines. The really great thing about Codemasters cassette games, which is one of the reasons the NES versions didn't do too well IMO, is that they only cost £1.99 each, less than a tenth of the price of a NES cart.
Something about that gameplay footage really reminds me of Cosmic Spacehead, another Codemasters/Camerica game. I suppose it would be no small leap to assume developers and ideas, maybe even code, was shared between them.
I dont think it was a 'terrible' accessory i thought it was a clever way to get around the lockout chip by seperating the rom chip from the tech needed to bypass the 10 nes
@pojr These really obscure and unknown games are really fascinating! Dizzy seems like it provided some inspiration to the next Zelda game, Echoes of Wisdom, which I am STOKED for.
I remember seeing Dizzy in the Game Genie commercial from the 90s, but did not know what game that was until many years later. Here's the commercial that came to mind when I saw Dizzy in this video... ua-cam.com/video/krwffPqMSRo/v-deo.html
Knowing the automated lockout bypass on some Deck Enhancers, and the PAL black cart Codemasters games, fry NES systems that each have no working lockout chip, is there a way to disable that lockout bypass, making those carts safe to use on region free NES systems? I’ve also heard that carts that spike the lockout chip, like ones from Color Dreams and Active Enterprises, get hot if you play them on a region free system for more than an hour, worrying me that those carts could shorten the life of such consoles! Anyone got an idea for a fix or workaround? Maybe a Game Genie-like device with a lockout chip in it? Cheers. Still, at least Dizzy The Adventurer is also on the Game Gear as part of The Excellent Dizzy Collection, and the Evercade as part of the Oliver Twins Collection!
Wow did you actually do any research before you slap this video together because it allowed in deck enhancer was that it enhanced the games it was supposed to be able to have better quality of games as well for the NES as well as making it easier for companies to bypass the lockout ship you really need to do your homework if you're going to do this kind of videos cuz this is lazy as heck if you're going to talk about your own deck enhancer at least know something about it because the information in this video is useless
Aladdin Deck Enhancer was basically all the hardware of a Contra or Winter Games cartridge, just without the game. No enhancements, just a cheaper production cost for the game itself.
Cancel early on made it sound like a system that failed in the first year of business but it is arguable whether or not the Aladdin deck enhancer ever came to market at all. So it either came out in November 1992 or in January 93 and was quickly cancelled or it never made it to market at all because camera was going under at the time. If you're going to do videos like this at least take the time can you give proper information otherwise your channel in the videos you do are pointless. And this was easy enough to find out with a Google search. which means you just didn't bother to put in the effort for the video. You were starting to be one of my favorite channels 4 retro video game stuff but this kind of junk makes me question whether or not to watch anything I believe anything you say again.
The gas station across the street sells a variety of "deck enhancers"
Haven't been brave enough to try them.
Shark? Rhino? Or maybe King Kong... so many choices!
lol
Same with their gas station sushi

I really must give Super Robin Hood a proper playthrough, I have it on Evercade as part of the Oliver Twins Collection!
I agree. It definitely feels weird putting Codemasters in the same category as color dreams
Another favorite of mine is Big Nose the Caveman. That was only released on gold cartridge at least in USA format. UK might've gotten it in pass-thru cartridge format like the Game Genie. The Ultimate Stuntman is a very fun game. Does have its frustrating moments and some weird enemies like birds and bees.
I often find myself saying "What's going on? Iiiit's POJR! Comin' atchaaa wiiith another video!" randomly throughout the day.
I love that lol

If more unlicensed game developers were on board, it could have been an interesting add-on.
Either that, or Nintendo would have sued em into the ground
Some Developers just wouldn't move on from the NES
I'm fine with that
NES was 2600 of its day. Most developers of the day don't have resources to develop for smaller platforms.
They did they made Xbox /Xbox 360 hybrid games for Burger King
Good.
I'm a present day developer for the Gameboy.
_Long live the grey brick!_
As terrible as it might be, the deck enhancer was such a missed oportunity. It was too little too late and didn't enhance anything but it could have been great for unofficial developers had it been released 5 years earlier. Specially with the chip shortage.
"The peripheral was discontinued early on"
Actually, Gaming Historian couldn't find any evidence that it was even RELEASED.
I just don't understand what's so "terrible" about the Aladdin Deck Enhancer (except for being terribly late to the market), I think the idea is great.

Nintendo turned super robin hood in to two obscure games no one talks about super Mario and zelda.
Micro Machines is easily the best unlicensed game. I still like to play it today.
It is a great game. In my opinion, there are a few contenders for the best unlicensed game, including micro machines
This should be made available on the Evercade!
All these games shown on the video are already available on Evercade.

Super Robinhood got Goonies vibe.
I have no nostalgia for the Oliver Twins, but I do love their passion for making games.
Fun fact, the Oliver Twins would go on to produce Sneak King for the XBOX.
fascinating, i had no idea there were unreleased games for the Deck Enhancer. Great video Pojr!
Absolutely love all your videos. Great content. Keep grinding till you get 1M subscribers!
0:52 That face. This should be a talking channel, where only the game is shown.
Let's Go it's POJR awesome video & insights keep up the great work 👍
I played these games on Evercade for first time... I'd never heard of them before.

I kinda like the consistency of it. To skip it would take away from the full experience imo.
It's his "Hey all Scott here" kind of thing.

Their first Code Masters games were on the Amstrad CPC, not the BBC or Dragon 32, you should have clarified this.
He talks about the limeline like this "They began programming from the ZX-80 to Dragon 32, to BBC and later licenced out to the NES". When talking about the NES games, he stated they were ports based on the Amstrad games, so there's the Amstrad reference at least.
