a very beautiful and sad song, written by the last ruler of the sovereign nation of Hawaii. As a hauli that married a native Hawaiian, I can honestly say there is no land or people more beautiful.
It wasn't until after both of my parents passed on (buried at Mililani) that I truly felt the immense Love and Passion in the words that this song brings out. Thank you for sharing and how blessed we are to enjoy these wonderful performers & missing IZ.
I was blessed to be able to go to Hawaii in the 60's and early 70's before the commercialism explosion. I was blessed to have a tour guide named George, He was in WWII and in an area where my Daddy was and they hit it off. We were fortunate enough to have Georgie from Island Holiday Tours be our guide more than once. He taught me about island culture and took us places that regular tours never got to go because of his connections. Hawaii spirit will always live in my heart and I'm so sorry that I never heard of IZ before he died. What a beautiful spirit and man. I have many happy memories sitting on the beach at Luau hearing Aloha oe sung. Aloah and Mahalo Bruddah IZ, Can't wait to hug you in heaven my bruddah from anotha mudda :-)
I came here after reading about Duke Kahanmoku and then the version of Aloha Oe on Wiki.... Thank you for posting this beautiful song. It brought a few tears to my eyes, and I am not ashamed to say it!
Wow, looking back in time. Legends, and melodies beautiful background, natural, come as you are. The words, the history, cultures divided, in a time of political overthrow. Empty promises, a continued take over by greedy, wealthy, business power. Just like the Indians, our land, our people On Reservations, Homestead. History, paints a bittersweet memories & music. My memory in 1959 selling Star Bulletin Newspaper- fisherman's wharf. "Statehood"
Deez guys all really famous Hawaiian performers. Roland Cazimero from the Brothers Cazimero, Bradda Iz from the Makaha Sons of Ni‘ihau, Cyril Pahinui: son of the great Gabby Pahinui, and Henry Kapono (some dude that is good at singing)
What a treasure. Stumbled upon your video after watching Mt. Apple's free download of Bro Iz 'Over the Rainbow.' Friends were wondering if Israel and Gabby had sung together. Thanks for posting.
Mahalo
We recorded this in summer of 1993 on Oahu.
