I keep coming back to this. So much time has passed. So many things have changed. Through good times and bad, this has stuck out as a tasteful, original, and beautiful rendition of an underrated song. Thank you for posting this a lifetime ago.
Sweet Erin.. you are evidence that Angels do come down from Heaven and carry the voice that only a angel could have.. I found this cover/video years and years ago when I was living in Chicago during an extremely dark and terrible point in my life, and I watched and listen to you for countless days, for weeks and weeks.. and you saved me. I am back to listening to you over and over again today.. You are so unbelieveably gifted and gorgeous. I wish I could meet you and Thankyou, my heart.
I wouldn't be upset if you were to do another, more recent cover of this... Been listening to this one for years and it's a consistent source of frisson. Hope you're still making music dude.
Thank you for such a beautiful cover of an amazing song. That long "like an open book" is just so emotional. I'm not sure why. Keep up the great music. I really like your Christian Brothers cover also.
Oh my god that was stunning. You sent shivers down my spine. Best Elliott cover i have ever heard along with Medeleine Peyroux's cover of Between the Bars. I hope you make a record one day i will buy it. You have a new fan.
This is wonderful, you did the song great justice! You're voice is marvelous--you can really evoke the mood and tone of this beautiful song. I also enjoy the simplicity of the piano, reminds me of the striking melodic beauty of I Didn't Understand as Elliott played on piano occasionally.
Your elliott covers always make me smile. Its rare you come across really good elliott covers, and you do an awesome job of making them your own. Thanks for spreading the love, and if you ever get the feeling i would love to see you sing "I figured you out" but that just me being greedy =3... love from alaska
That's freaking scary. I guarantee you that Elliott would have been impressed. I usually find covers of his to be very insulting, however, this is creepy. Props.
I love it-and I’m a tough sell on Elliott covers, but, just curious -why did you change the chord structure of the chorus? It’s the same three chords you play when you sing “on the back of a 45.” Those three chords just repeat for four beats each during the “placeholder come and take up mine....” if it was deliberate, cool interpretation.
If you play the song at 1.5 speed, the pacing sound much more like the Original version. Comparing them like that; this is actually such a great cover.
Even though I know it’s technically unnatural and not the most true to what she actually did (regarding the speed), it’s funny bc I think it sounds very good when you put it that way lol
Every cover I've heard that you've done besides "Between the Bars" (which was still good) has been better, to me, than the original...so, not to sound like a redundant wooden juke-box, but you should post some originals. You're quite great, if you didn't know...from one musician/song-writer to another. Show your true stuff!! Sorry to be goofily similar to other posts...I'm done now.
maybe you should upload your videos in a different way, that way i can watch your vids in high quality and the sound would be better... it's good don't get me wrong, but i prefer high quality
almost 14 years later i still come back to these Elliott covers now and again.
You know where she went?
same
"I'm the person you'll never need. The biggest loser on sixteenth street. The invisible man with the see-through mind." (love this)
thank you. I had learned the song a few years ago but like so many Elliott songs it continues to develop meaning each time I hear or play it.
15 years later this is still my favorite cover on an Elliott Smith song. This is brilliant you are amazing.
