Fortunately they adressed Torterra's size on Detective Pikachu, giving its fans the kaiju size it deserves.
Those Torterra were specifically stated to be genetically modified, and normal-sized ones appear in the movie too.
@@theking8347 That's one GMO I can get behind
I think torterra’s size is perfect the way it is
I'm sure he got a great personality.
A nice reminder that it's a CONTINENT Pokèmon.

The Torterra garden is awesome and should be a thing in the mainline games

@@TheRambossss And it did them justice.
Torterra being small makes it resemble a Bonzai garden instead, which I think might be what they were going for.
oh yeah they were going for a Bonsai / zen garden vibe for sure
Bonsai Tortoise, yeah!
Some pokemon live on its back. Not bonsai garden sized at all
@@beef81263 i mean bonsai can be bigger, like even 1-2 meter tall. There are even specific kinds that are bigger sized for gardens as well :)
@@jai249 it's the Continent Pokémon. Its back is a forest.
Honestly Torterra is a design I grew to love as age came by. Initially like most I was part of the infernape crew but as an adult, infernape stands firmly under the mighty terrain turtle. Genuinely one of the best grass starters, probably in second or third for me.
Infernape always has and always will be my favorite starter of all time, but tortarra is number 2, with swampert being number three.
I’m bias as my first starter was piplup so when it comes to get 4 starters the emperors penguin is #1
I used to debate between torterra and infernape but I realized a few years ago I really only like Monferno from the chimchar line and love the entire Torterra line as one of my top 5 pokemon lines ever.
Why not both? Infernape resting under the tree on torterra’s shell
Ironically, Torterra type-trumps both Empoleon and Infernape with its Ground-typing and immediate access to one of the best Ground-Type Moves ever! Earthquake!
Gen 4 will be weirdly short considering how many pokemon in it are attempts to make complete evolution lines rather than new evolution lines.
I'm fine with that since it means we'll get quickly to gen 5 which has some of my fav designs of the entire pokedex.
While it will be 45 shorts in total, the shortest one in turn will be Gen 6 with 37.
@@key099able It might even be less than 45 if we assume Pokémon like the Lake Guardians end up grouped into one like with the Lati twins.
@@bdletoast09 I like Gen 4’s designs a lot too both gens are incredible at keeping things from getting overcomplicated while still being really unique.
I think the Gen 4 reviews will still last until like August though.
I think you're being a bit too harsh on Grotle, he's a good boy and a fine looking young man.
He’s an awkward teen. His greenery isn’t there yet but he’ll glow up soon

Turtwig and Torterra are my boys. If you'd have had a bad word to say about them I'd never have forgiven you!
I notice you didn't mention Grotle.
That's fair.
Me too, Turtwig was my first Pokémon
Turtwig is best starter. Yes, I am biased. No, I don't care. Turtwig is best starter. My first fight with a box art legendary ended with my Torterra using a single earthquake to best an actual deity in combat. Since then I refuse to fight the box art legendaries and just use the master ball.
Fick yeah. I love Torterra so much. It got the shaft so bad when it came to hidden abilities.
I’m looking forward to hearing you talk about Gen 4 Pokemon. It’s a shame you’ve already talked about half of them 😅
@@timothymcleanits NOT FAIR. He's not that bad compared to other middle stages. Sure, he's not the best, but he's ok and deserves a spot to chill with his little brother and father.
Grotle looks like a "starting out my garden" part between Torterra and Turtwig. Turtwig is the seeds finally sprouted, Grotle is the I just planted things and it looks a bit awkward but its because the plants are small, torterra is the I trusted the process and now it's gorgeous.
I was about to throw hands in the beginning there
I can see the Piplup line diss coming 😭 (though maybe the Chimchar line is the worst for being Literally Just Sun Wukong? I doubt it tbh)
@@pulim-v yeah it is, both are tied for worst tho. Only reason bieng they ain't torterra.
@@pulim-v Heeeey, honsetly, I wouldn't be too surprised if Skyen decided to shame Wukong for being yet another Wukong rip-off, but given that Empoleon is the Napoleon pokémon, I don't expect him to be kind to it.
I am curious which one he thinks is the worst one too. I like the Chimchar line more but I can see why people would preffer the Piplup line and think it's better designed so...could be any of the 2 lol
@@bdletoast09 while I don't think it's likely, Skyen could end up saying something along the lines of "what is the Napoleon penguin doing in the middle of Hokkaido" which would hurt lmao
One thing I think people always miss with Torterra is that he’s not actually a turtle, he’s almost exactly a nodosaur, the shell sorta sits on top of him, not around him, he can’t retract in it at all, he’s got a noticeable tail, and a spikey head, he’s a dinosaur.
Oh my goodness!
I mean, the name is literally "turtle" and "twig" combined, I definitely think a turtle was in their mind lol
And then Torterra is just Tortoise and Terra
@@98loud I’m sure it was part of the inspiration, especially for Turtwig, but the nodosaur parts are way too deliberate in the later stages, as for names, they aren’t always reliable, like the bulbasaur line having nothing in common with dinosaurs or lizards but still using saur in all its names, but that one is a result of localization since the bulbasaur lines names in Japan are all different.
Why can he learn Withdraw then?
Nope. Torterra can use withdraw, as in withdraw softer parts into a tougher part. Therefore it's a complete tortoise
"It looks a little half finished"
That... that is the point, its a growing tree.
Skyen playing a dangerous game in those opening seconds 😂
He is though. Not cause he's bad, but because the other two are just better
I agree, he should have been harsher
I will rend this planet apart before I spend another MINUTE among you Turtwig slanderers!!
I do love that for some reason it has snow-covered mountains on its back. Somehow despite only being a bit over 7 feet tall, the mountains on its back are implied to have their own heavily localized climate by having snow covered peaks. I've always liked the mountains and tree on its back.
I really hate to do this to you, but those are moss covered rocks. Not saying they couldn't be referencing snowy mountain, just that that's what they are in universe. I only used tcg cards as reference so it's perfectly possible I'm wrong
@@kyuutakitsune7163 NOOOOOO, my hilariously and unrealistically localized climate!

Turtwig just looks happy to be here and that's enough for me
I loved the torterra in the detective pikachu movie
I love this entire line which is pretty rare tbh. Even Grotle I rather like. He’s just a sturdy lil guy
While most middle evos seem like they’re trying to grow up too quickly or get saddled with awkward looking features, Grotle seems like he’s just trying to listen to his mother and eat his vegetables.
Torterra for me was done justice in Legends Arceus. Finding an Alpha Torterra was so satisfying because the size gave the feel of how I thought its size should be.
Turtwig has a level of gregarious charm that I don't think any other Grass starter achieves
I was ready with the pitchfork there.
Same, I had a torch ready to go.
This little guy broke my fire starter streak i will always have a special place in my heart for turtwig
I've always liked how Turtwig's two leaves relates to the Player's hometown name, Twinleaf Town. It's a metaphor for you and your rival, but canonically Turtwig's leaves are likely the namesake.
Also, to give credit to Grotle's design, I've always felt those markings on its back were meant to evoke tilled fields where seeds are planted, which foreshadows the garden on Torterra's back.
Torterra is a journey that takes a minute to get to the destination, but that is so well worth it.
The giant Torterra’s in the Detective Pikachu movie were so cool, probably my favorite part of that film.
I always viewed the line as a transition from a little garden, to a city hedge, and then into a park almost. I really like how it looks like you could plant something in Turtwig's and Torrtera's shell kinda like a living flower pot, i think grottle would've benefited if it didn't have that weird armadillo shell on its back instead
Turtwig has been my favorite pokemon for a while. I'm glad he finally has his time to shine
Okay but consider:
They are all my babies and I LOVE THEM
*Grass Starter fans:* You shall be spared... for now.
Tbf I would also enjoy a miniature world turtle with a Bonsai tree growing on it's back, but yes Torterra is way to small for its intended concept.
Happy to see you doing gen 4 now, it's one of my fave generations in the series and Turtwig is one of my fave starters as well ^^
Infernape: a small child
Torterra: *GODZILLA music intensifies*
THEY COULD NEVER MAKE ME HATE YOU TYRTWIG
There he is.
The bestest boy.
Grotle is honestly one of my favorite starter mid-evolutions, I’ve always thought its color scheme was nice and the shell kind of wrapping around it like an armored dinosaur is a neat detail
So, Detective Pikachu fixed it to be S tier then?
the turtwig line is probably my favorite line in the series. and they’re genuinely really solid pokemon too!
It's an absolute crime that Torterra didn't appear in Gen 8 and get a Gigantomax form....
Yeah, Snorlax stole Torterra's rightful Gigantamax form.
Grotle always reminded me of those strips of grass and a few trees in the middle of highways or large roads, so I always liked it for that. It represented a piece of land that I always saw but never got to explore.
The middle evolution is always just a transition and his excessive amount of gold/yellow would make sense if Torterra wasn't devoid of it instead going for silver/white.
This man was about to have everyone in the comments square up
No matter what this guy will always be my favorite starter from this generation something about torterra in particular really strikes a chord with me maybe it's the fact that it played into my likes as a kid but this guy will always be my second favorite starter form any generation
And now we go to the best generation imo. Albeit that’s mainly for platinum, explorers of sky, shadows of almia, the anime (Paul specifically) and the movies (specifically the Darkrai one). Anyway, turtwigs fun. Did a mono ground type years ago and it was pretty good.
Torterra, or as my bestie called it: MURDER TURTLE.
I do not know why he called it that but he was part of the competitive scene so maybe it was good. Idk, idc.
The final evolutions of all the gen 4 starters are magnificent. They look like legendaries.
You mean second BEST.
It was my least favorite design as a kid but as an adult I could honestly see myself chilling on my torterras back and sitting under the shade of his tree
To be fair, Torterra is know has the continental pokemon. So, it would be huge. Detective Pikachu kinda try to make realistic.
The coolest grass type design till date.. Torterra...
grotle may look a little silly and unfinished, but i think it just adds to the 'middle stage' charm of a starter. i picked turtwig in my first playthroughs of a diamond rom and pokemmo's sinnoh region based on platinum
The mountain sized Torterra from Detective Pikachu are such a perfect endgame for this design that they retroactively take a lot of wind out of the sails of this final evo.
Real reason for them being small is size constraints but I like to think that humans bred them to be smaller because it would be dangerous to give such a large Pokémon to a child as a starter. Wild Torterra were probably huge
The way Turtwig behaves in Legends after you catch him made me love him even more
Second worse??? So second best?
TB Skyen casually angering every Turtwig stan was pretty funny
I still have a fondness for Grotle, but yeah its definitely the weak link of this evo line. Turtwig and Torterra are litteral perfect though.
I always loved this line. Its a simple concept - a grass tortoise. Ive seen so many creative ways to design them, going off all kinds of trees. Theyre Friend shaped, like Torterra would just let its trainer take a nap on its back and probably nap woth them.
Yeah they screwed grotle up. I chose chimchar for that reason. I wish they redesigned grotle cuz I love torterra's design
The best part is gamefreak knew this I think.
Turtwig evolves at level 18 and Grotle evolves at 32. Making it I think the smallest level gap for a middle evo starter.
I think detective Pikachu answered the question by showing us they can get continental sized if old enough. They also similarly did the same with avalugg in Legends Arceus
"Just kidding its only the second worst"
... whos the first?
Piplup obviously
@@SwampyBoy476 Piplup is clearly the best
If you watch his other videos, it’s Chimchar
The execution of the leaves on the bushes and tree is really well done- that stuff is difficult to pull off
Say anything bad about piplup and I will be the monster under your bed for the next month.
Considering that he said that it’s the best Gen 4 starter and that Empoleon is “basically a legendary”, I wouldn’t worry.
(I know this because he posted them early, but are now deleted?)
@@RelanTheMan okay. Thank you. I was worrying that I’d have to deal with more witch trials.

Ah, glad we agree Chimchar is the worst.
This being my favorite pokemon ever, that intro gave me a heart attack
As I recall, Torterra size is 7' 01".
It's the largest of the three Sinnoh Starters.
Who’s the worst. It better not be my beloved Fire Ape. Infernape is so cool and the whole line goes so hard.
The twig moves from its head and becomes a bush when it evolves
It would make a dope ride pokemon. Imagine a nice, slow journey across the wilderness, relaxing under the tree, taking breaks occasionally, for you and your pokemon.
‘Slowly pulls out a wooden club for that starting gag’
I was so thrown off when I found out torterra was shorter than I am
Gen 4 may be my favourite trio of starters, they are all so solid, could really imagine picking any of them.
I love this big ol mountain tortoise
I was about to throw hands at the start ngl, these turtle dudes are the best starters in gen 4
I’m glad I’m not the only one who always thought grottle should have flowers on its bushes.
I really love the entire turtwig line they are so flat out adorable and cool.
Imagine feeding a turtwig appy slices from an apple picked from its own mother's tree.
Turtwig honestly might be my favorite starter. Insane how cute it is.
My first pokemon ever, Thumper my Torterra will always have a special place in my heart
Torterra doesn't even look like a turtle anymore, it looks like an armored dinosaur, like an ankylosaurus.
Torterra is sick and ive kept "Yggdrashell" as my nickname for it for years
Wow I can’t believe we’re already on gen 4 can’t wait to see all the great fire type designs this gen!
I named mine Twiggy.
My second favorite Grass starter.
Boy, you're gonna love how Torterra appears in the Detective Pikachu movie
Mountain sized tortoises
Turtwig was my first starter pokemon and the main reason why I love Grass types to this day.
As Piplup is my favourite pokemon, I’m both excited and terrified to see Skyen analyze its design 😂
Grotle looked like the designet went for a construction hard hat, then changed the theme for the final stage.
My favorite trio of starters. I think that all of then are so good. When i start a new game i never know which choose
I do think these are probably the best starter trio in the history of the series.
However, my choice is and always will be Turtwig.
This evolution line will always have a soft spot in my heart. Pearl was my first mainline Pokémon game and Turtwig was my very first starter!❤
“The second worst” *gasp* you take that back!
Choosing violence at the very start of the video? Fascinating.
Turtwig has the best cry of all time. There is no better that I know of.
that intro triggered my fight or flight instincts . specifically the fight ones
