that 2004 one REALLY looks like it came out today.
Yeah, if the screen screen ratio was higher then I yeah it would look like it could've been released this year
The 2004 one looks like it came out in 2009/2010 actually, around 7's time. Meanwhile the one I have from the same year looks like it was made in 2006/2007, around Vista's time.
Sony vaios are JUNK. never last, mine broke 2 years after we got in in 2010 and it already went through 2 screens, mind you we never dropped it. i opened it up and found this solder fracture and thats just 1 issue, the display cable is almost gone fan nonstop spins just CRAP

Fun fact:
Steve Jobs loved the Vaio designs so much back in the day he was willing to offer os x to sony
That's a bold move...
Le Docteur Steve loves Sony ALOT, even iPhone 4 designs is similar to a unused Sony voice recorder design.
Yep, happened during a business trip in Hawaii circa 2001. After a round of golf, Sony executive Kunitake Ando was shown a demo of Mac OS X running on a Vaio with an Intel processor. Talks fell through since Vaios were "optimized to run Windows", though probably an exclusivity deal with Microsoft was the true reason.
fun fact: Steve Jobs was not a good person
You are correct that Jobs tried to contract with Sony to manufacture OSX laptops. Sony designed the Powerbook 100 back in the day.
Sony Vaio laptops used to be solid, reliable and pretty functional

My vaio is 2 gb ram intel core i3 and an nvidia 410m.
same and it has touchscreen, no one would know it's so old. had vaio's all my life, no ideaa what my next laptop will have to be.
6:06 they even had dongles for laptops before apple did. truely ahead of its time!
They called them expansion blocks or wired dock back in the day... I like the word dongle though.... Dongle..
Black Shibe but they don’t cost 500€?
Macky4941 I think they are called docking stations. Business laptops still have them.
I think this is a docking station not a dongle.
My sony vaio was my first laptop back in 2010 it still runs after 9 years! It's kind of lika a nostalgia.
I got the Sony VAIO S in 2010. Upgraded RAM & SSD. Running better than new 😎👊

Mine too!
TBH Austin MOST conference rooms or classrooms are rocking Only VGA for the projector with no DVI or HDMI in sight...
I was unpleasantly surprised by this during my trips to America, like, for god sake, please update your hardware.
I mean, my class paid 30 bucks for a 30m HDMI cable (so around 1 dollar per person) and you can get a cheap but functional VGA to HDMI adaptor for 5 bucks in case the projector/main computer doesn't have a HDMI port... so the total would be 35 dollars. I get it, the students shouldn't be the ones buying stuff, but someone has to, and the schools are not gonna do it, so you pretty much have to take it into your own hands
@@Verpal where are you from? The situation is the same in Europe and probably on Japan too.
Yeah, most business laptop still have VGA, but it's unusual to find it on a ultrabook. Even Lenovo with their Thinkpad are slowly getting rid of it.
VGA makes sense if you think about it. If you've got a decent but old projector why get rid of it.
Early 2000s Nokia and Sony had some very interesting products that were pushing the envelope on portable tech.

The real question is
Is the drug cartel mustache still worth it in 2019?
Vaio was my first laptop I got. Over time, the laptop was running slower and slower.
It probably hat a HDD. They tend to get slower over time
Ace Yaeger I think so too
dude, mine too i wonder what happened..
Same
hard drives in computers get slower over time because of how they work. A hard drive reads data as it spins on a disc and on a new system files are bunched close together making it quicker to read, but over time as you delete stuff and use more data it gets disorganized and it takes longer for it to find the info on a disc. There was a way to fix it by reorganizing the data, its called defragging. I would do it every year or so. In early windows they didnt have it built in, so thats why it got slow. But now with windows 10 it will automatically defrag the drive for you. but thats only for hard drives, ssds in computers dont need to be defragged
I still use a vaio i bought it in 2008 and it still works to this day
I worked in Sony Vaio's tech support before and had the chance to use their laptops and their All in One Desktops. They were really good and I liked the designs. They were pretty expensive though. We even had that UX180P and the Vaio P (my favorite). It was small and compact but still a fully functioning laptop. They also treated their employees well. They usually awarded their top performing employees with Sony TVs, home entertainment systems and their latest laptops.
Indeed what happened is that they produced futuristic and long lasting laptops so people stopped buying new ones lol
I'm currently writing on a 10 years old VAIO (model VPCEB2B4E if you wanna check its kickass specs), it still rocks to this day and at the time it was only 900€ everything included
Oh cool the stache is g- MOTHER OF NEPTUNE

Vaio, very reliable Laptops Sony has ever made.
My mom had a vaio back in 2005 and it has served her till a couple weeks ago. She loved it dearly. RIP white VAIO
I miss the Vaio, made the best laptops in the early 2000’s imo
Ikr... My laptop is still alive to this day after 19½ years
Bought a 17" Vaio F-series in 2009 and used it every single day until 2016 when it started freezing up because of a windows update issue. I loved that thing and was sad when I went looking for its newer replacement and found out they don't even make them anymore. I tried to revive it last year with an SSD and stuff but its just too heavy and brittle after all these years.
Yeah, the one my mother had with Windows ME that she later upgraded to a pirated Windows XP lasted her for 8 years, till she got a new computer. And even then it still worked, till the PSU died around the same number of years after it laid unused.
The only other issue it really had was that the OS oddly didn't accept any form of communication input, albeit any kind of mouse or keyboard. Just doing a repair install of XP would fix that, though.
what the dell happened to sony
vaio looked so modern for it time and it was so durable, so hard to find a laptop that looks nice and durable these days.

My favourite Austin video so far 😍
I had the PCG-505 from 1998. That was one of my favorite laptops I've ever owned. That baby had 128 MB (doubled from standard 64 MB) of RAM and a 6GB HD. It had a super high res 1024x768 display, and on the 10 inch screen it was really sharp. I used that thing way past its expected lifespan by putting lightweight versions of Linux on there. Thank you for bringing back those memories!
The mustache is gone... yay?
Edit: nvm it’s here
Nice video, I really enjoy these kind of videos about exotic old tech, those pc's are dope.
Still have my Sony Vaio VGN-FE 11M. From 2007 at that time was top of the line. It still works fine and still use it to do a few things. Good machine.
*_That_** feeling when you see that Austin didn't activate Windows on a laptop*

I love Vaio. If they get back on track and release something mid-range that I can work on and do slight gaming on, I'd be there.
Very well put up. I have previous owned 4 vaio laptops and currently using vaio s. Sad to see them not coming up with something cool or innovate and go crazy.

I remember having a sony vaio laptop back in 2010 iirc, it looked so great, I grabbed it and installed linux on it. I still have it with me, sadly the battery last less than half of its original capacity but I still love it and use it from time to time

3:22 i was like FUCK......ITS STILL THEREEEE
Great Video! Sony is one of those brands who silently got lost in the market after they were leading in flagship designs. This was a great flash back! Much design and styling has been lost in the tech world where upgrades aren't so exciting anymore like they once were. Would love to hear more on other brand's history too and what happened.... Compaq, Toshiba, Fujitsu, Gateway, Etc....
Ha! Got lost? Sony grew far too complacent - they rested on their laurels and failed to innovate. Before long Vaio PCs became a drag on the company, barely turning a profit as they churned mediocre machine after mediocre machine out in the late 2000's early 2010's. Sony has only themselves to blame for it.
You'll be happy to know that Toshiba and Fujitsu are doing well, though they've largely refocused on industrial applications than the consumer market. You'll find many hospitals and work sites with ruggedized Fujitsu machines. Gateway may still exist in some capacity, but they were bought out years ago. When they were pulled from the US market, they carried on for years in Europe and other places for some time. Compaq eventually just rolled into HP's entry-level lineups, but they still own the name.
My first PC was a Sony Vaio PCV-RX752. It was a great computer and I still have it with the original monitor as well.
Absolutely is absolutely Austin’s new favorite word....

What happened to Austin Evans Mustache ?
It’s still there. 😂

It grew back
z series was a beautiful laptop with the mac style pricing
I didn't know what to expect at first when opening the video but I love where this went. I'm a huge fan of unique electronics and I will actively work around having something that isn't generic. Those old Vaio designs screamed to me and I wish they would reboot something like that in today standards. I already own a GPD Win, but that mini computer looked so awesome and the tiny ultrawide was super intriguing at well.
I had the Vaio Z13 which was incredible, not as outlandish but still crazy. It had Macbook pro 15 specs in an 1.3kg light 13inch chassis. Could run games fairly well, was really well made but mad expensive. Wish they made those crazy concepts still. It was a thin and light gaming laptop way before Razer even considered making laptops.
Days when Sony literally had innovations up their sleeves. I'm not saying they don't have innovations now, they still have it.
Even Japanese stopped caring about what's next from Sony since iPod, LG/Samsung/htc and whole China. I'm pretty sure they'll sell Xperia brand which I can't remember the last time I saw anyone who had them (even in Japan), even less so for the last time anyone outside Japan made a review about it. The last innovative stuff about xperia was about being waterproof before it was standard, but that was not sony's but Japanese market's standard since 2008-ish. They are just known for looking cool and expensive and this saddens old sony fanboy.
@@IoriTatsuguchi Xperia strived and is still doing the same today. Sony's mobile segment is struggling even though they came up with the first waterproof as you mentioned and perhaps, I reckon it's because of impractical pricing, which isn't frugal for a mobile phone of such standard at the current market place. On the contrary, there are other manufacturers with similar or better specifications at a lower price setting the standard. Therefore the plummet on their sales.
@@ankurdebbarma6363; I didn't need to check with facts to tell because it's visibly selling less, but, well apparently it's sold only a half units in their main market Japan in comparison to the year before. I only hear praise from foreigner too.
It was like Japanese in 90's: "Sony is the best"; 00's "Sony will come back" 05 "OK they are done"
@@IoriTatsuguchi Sony is being run by old Japanese men with no visions. Japanese companies needs reflection that they need to innovate, to take calculated risk if need, and to have their own bubble burst.
My dad still has his VAIO from like 2010 lol.
Great video Duncan!
My first laptop was a Sony VAIO PCG-FR415M running Windows XP. It was expensive, but really high build quality and had a good weight to it.
i like them because they start so many colors in laptops.
Im 11 now but back when I was about 9 I remember my mom having a nice vaio with a core in but I ended up destroying it with viruses accidentally
I've learned a lot more about computers and can now even dual boot arch Linux!
Dual-booting a PC isn't all too difficult, but it's impressive for an 11-year-old.
Never had a VAIO device in the house (we were strictly a Dell family lol), but I have a cousin that was in college back in like 2006 that would babysit me and my siblings who had a VAIO laptop and it was the coolest thing I'd ever seen at the time.
I bought a Vaio laptop in 2013 (Win 8) and recently upgraded to latest Win 10 - 1809.
Core i5
500GB
4GB ram (upgraded)
it runs for 4 hrs straight on the battery.
I'm happy with the performance of the laptop.
Vaio is still used today, my step dad has one
Plenty of legacy Vaio machines are still in use, but they offer so little value in current models that it just doesn't make economical sense to buy them. I knew plenty of folks with Vaio computers back when they were relevant, but the few I've seen with them today are just reusing and upgrading old models.
Austin Evans next video - "Is the 2019 Mustache worth it?"
"No."
I still remember my moms vaio laptop stayed with her for idk 7-10 years! Damn it really fought hard to live until last year it shut off :”)

Edit: 3:22 never mind
I had a red vaio about 10 years back. It really unique amongst all the generic HP’s dells of the era. It had a really good keyboard and it was reasonably fast system. I remember my roommates hp used to get hot near the trackpad, while my vaio’s thermal components were all at the rear, so front palm rests rarely got warm. It was truly one of the best machines at the time.
Although I've never owned a VAIO personally, (I've always been a ThinkPad guy), quite a few of my coworkers have owned Vaio's in the past. Seeing the X505 in this video was a wonderful throwback, as a friend of mine actually *bought* one of those for work, and used it for years. Here I am rocking my ThinkPad T40 though :)
