Regarding tramp art: My Great Grandmother used to feed the "tramps" that would steal rides on the train cars during the depression. As a thank you they made her several pieces of art. She had a bowl, an a beautiful box, and several picture frames. I personally love my family's connection to this particular art form.
I too remember stories from my Gramma, Mom, and her sisters about the 'tramps' walking to their farmhouse from the train tracks not far from their home. They told of stories during the depression of these men making things from trash or found objects as gifts for the kind folks, like my Mom's family, who fed them. Some would do small jobs for the food, while others made things as thank you gifts. Some folks were afraid of them, of the stories from my family never mentioned any of these 'travelers' being anything but kind. I feel the tiny home movement as being similar to those times in many ways. Folks doing what they can to live a good life for themselves often moving from place to place where they can find work to feed themselves.
This is what my grandmother said about tramp art. Hobos and men looking for work during the depression would make these pieces out of trash and broken things they found traveling and trade them for food poor money.
When I was a toddler, we lived in a little house that was about 200 feet from a railroad track. My mom kept a ceramic mug for the hobos who came to the door for water. She would hand it through the door, then wash and keep it for the next taker.
Tramp Art is the original re-purpose product. The common element is that it be made from salvaged trash, cast-off items and objects. That's the "Tramp" element. That is why popsicle sticks, match sticks, and off-cuts are mainly the materials used.
Oh yeah. We had a tramp art matchstick cross in the house when I was little in the late 70s. I have a picture of me with it. I was obsessed with it for some reason. I think it was made in prison.
@@BebeDaull 😄 nice! The art style enjoyed a resurgence in the mid 1970s when Helaine Fendelman published a book about it. The practice had faded away (along with most tramps) into obscurity with the relative affluence of the post-war economy. Whenever popsicle sticks are the main material, you can tell it is a post-war creation. Cigar boxes and fruit crates adorned with off-cuts are more likely pre-1940s
I assume they just click the suggestions that come up instead of actually answering properly. Or you know the universal terrible reading comprehension strikes again, “how dare you say we piss on the poor” 😂
Tramp art was done by itinerant artists mostly. It was done mostly from the 1870s through the Great Depression. The artist would use reclaimed material like cigar boxes to make craved, pieced and glued objects such as jewelry boxes or picture frames in exchange for room and board while they made the piece. Definitely up cycling as we now call it. It was very popular in the U.S.
Pretty fun to see randon items. I love the "workshop-on-wheels" item with the cube truck! With Sorry Girls logo on the sides, going down the road; what a great way to advertise!!! The logo, all the social media icons painted along the bottom. Well...that is IF you want the exposure. Have a blessed day and a fab weekend!! xxoo
Like 'trench art' is done by soldiers using readily available shell casings, etc; 'tramp art' is tramps using easily available wood scraps to make decorative boxes, frames, etc. Somehow, no matter who made it, each piece seems to be instantly recognisable as tramp art.
As someone who doesn’t hang out in a group of “girl friends” anymore, I love watching you all interact with each other. I miss it. Thank you for this new series!
I actually had that plastic lamp in 1974 that I put in my bedroom! It was great, but don't keep the lamp on too long. I did that and it melted after about a year of use.
The tiles are gorgeous and companies aren’t making this kind of tile as much anymore. Personally I love glass tile I just don’t like the ones they choose for everyone’s homes. The long rectangles and the amount of colors in each section is what I dislike and looks the most dated.
2:50 - Trying to get simple answers from sellers on Marketplace is always so hit-or-miss, lol. And on the flip, I wrote a funny and informative description for my futon... still got asked "what are the dimensions?" and then 30 min before pick-up "oh does this come apart so I can fit it into my apartment?" ....buddy... buddy the description said it would be disassembled for transporting..... so yes! 😅
I loved the potao dishes, I'm with Ann the little potaos on the top are everything. Also the truck is super cute, but since it's on a flatbed I'm going with doesn't run. Creepiest tie between rocking grandma and the cat scratchers.
So funny to see those! My mom and I took ceramics classes back in the 70's; we actually made these; along with a large cabbage for coleslaw, Mushroom cannisters, and a few other items. I need to create a "Twilight Zone" room with all these 70's items I still have!! Or disperse them randomly on bookshelves as decor! Hmmm....🤔
Just a question: would you ever bring back upgrade my stay? That blue van seems perfect for a travelling DIY vibe like UMS. Also been really missing it and not so patiently waiting to find out if it will ever come back.
The little truck is adorable! I once bought a porcelain doll at an estate sale. I knew it was worth more than the 25 cents the box was marked with, but it ticked me right off how offhand the relatives were with the items for sale. It felt disrespectful. Anyway, I cleaned it up and sold it for $50 about 15 years ago.
Tramp art was really popular in the 70's and early 80's. My mom and her friends were making these items. You could buy different shaped popsicle sticks to create different patterns. I still have a few small pieces.
I'm actually surprised you guys didn't know about Tramp Art simply because it was one of the first art forms that specifically used discarded items to make art. Not just popsicle sticks. Cigar boxes were popular, scrap wood, etc. That's just like soo up The Sorry Girls ally. Lol but also, it's not super surprising either because there's also not much written documentation on Tramp Art from when it was first being made. This was art that was made in the spare time of the working class. It might also have a lot to do with The Arts and Crafts Movement which sought to put producing quality made utilitarian and beautiful items back into the hands of artisans instead of a factory. I'm not an art historian so I don't know if they are related, but to me they do have some parallels. Also, can we talk about how Facebook Marketplace and OfferUp are filled with MCM listing's that are not MCM. 😂 I feel like it's become a thing to add that in the title just to draw attention.
Tramp art is a form of Folk Art, popular between 1870 and 1940 approx. It's very labor intensive and fragile, and each piece is unique to the person that made it.
I used to love porcelin dolls too and I had 3. My pride and joy was one I bought with my share of a £97 lottery win in about 1995. One day, maybe about 3-4 years later, I woke up in the middle of the night and felt them all staring at me! They instantly became the creepiest thing ever and I couldn't look at them... just like that and were rehomed very quickly.
I. LOVED. THIS!! Facebook marketplace is one of the places I always go to, at least once a day 🤩 Just to be inspired, see if something new exciting has come up and I remember that you guys did, I think it was Becky, a video about curating your feed. I did that even before I saw that video but didn’t know the word for it and after the video I’ve done it even more, and now - I looove my feed. Would love to see more videos like this!
Omg! The bucket seats! Brings me back to scouts. Your packing list for day camp or overnight camp would include your "sit-apon." I was so jealous of the scouts that had kitty litter buckets with a padded "seat" (lid). They had a tall seat that held their flash light, water bottle, etc. I just had a chair pad, until dad brought home a folding cooler chair with some brand's logo on it from his work. I wonder if mom still has it, and what brand was it, Nokia?
Drew (Lone Fox) has a Tramp Art Lamp and styled it beautifully in the home he’s remolding in LA! Give it a watch, his work is amazing. Ps Love you Sorry gorrlllllsss ♥️ these videos are always fun to watch.
Was wondering where that place could be in the whole office & then it suddenly struck me that it's the storage room, it's looking so organised n beautiful i couldn't recognised it at first glance..
IDEA for the van!! TSG “Fix-It Mobile” use it to drive up and host meet & greet/ fix it days where you come with a bunch of basic tools and things and subscribers can bring things they’d like to fix but don’t have the means to on their own!:) I think that would be so cool 😎
this was fun!! and really great that you showed the items in their new homes at the end :) but I would have loved to not know right away who purchased what so that I can also guess, maybe just one big reveal to you and us as the audience at the end would be good as well
Few idea for "From the workshop floor" series: - The Sorry Girls team memeber reacts the old The sorry girls video. Justin and Rachel have done it, we need to see other members reaction.. - Old Sorry Girls team member comeback to spill the tea. - DIY craft challenge - doing a quick DIY challenge with time limit. - One Sorry Girl with one The Sorry Girls team member vs Another Sorry Girl with another team member to have challenge - Quick Fashion Challenge (We haven't seen those contents for a while.. it would be fun to have those) - Tea Spill: How Kelsey and Becky etc decide to hire the new team members or new position - Regret doing the DIY project and Regret not doing the DIY project
I will not stand for this cat slander! LOL For real tho, I love it when FB Marketplace sellers have a cat or two joining the pic of the item they are selling. It lets me know theyre not a serial killer.
My grandparents got tramp art off true hobos who traveled the railroad freight trains in the 1930-60s time frame. They traded their art for meal or to sleep in your barn. Most was indeed wood. But not all. some was bottlecaps, some was snipped from tin cans. One was made with sewing spools.
Yes, it was made from green ware(A pre-made mold that was either not fired or or fired once.). Then the student could decorate the mold and have it fired for the last time. Kinda wish I still had it. Lol
More of a funny market place story... on Market place in the Montreal region, there is an old guy selling tons of stuff and he doesn't have a cell phone. He took all of the pictures of the items he is selling with his webcam and he is on each and every single one of them. Everybody in Montreal regularly checking FB Market place know this guy. :D I read a post about him (on reddit I think...) but I could not find it to put the link here.

I love this! I actually was doing a mini series on my private Instagram stories sharing all the weird stuff I find on marketplace. I made a logo for it on Canva and everything lol. It is surprising how many coffin themed items I kept finding in my local area 😅😅
In a bizarre turn of events, this is the second video I've seen in just a few days that features that potato dish with the mini potato handle. Completely unrelated genres and creators. So weird how that happens sometimes, like when you learn an unusual new word and then hear it three times in the next couple of days 😆
Yep, tramp art is a real vibe. So many awesome & intriguing pieces out there waiting to be discovered. Some people are still trying their hand at this puzzling objet d'art, case in point check out the Atlanta Interior Design episode of Homeworthy from a couple of weeks ago. It was about 5 homes showcased but the last one prompted this text to you guys. Starting at 1:46:22 but the last 5 min was the jawdropper - check it out @ 2:34:31. What a project!!
Omg yes to the dimensions question! They always say “yes it’s available” and then “are you interested” and I have to say “I am if it’s the right size. Can you provide the dimensions?!”
My kitchen backsplash is the same glass tile as becky's current backsplash and I can't stand it! So busy. I'm almost tempted to paint over it until we can retile....
I thought tramp art was made out of old cigar boxes, maybe depression era. Not popsicle stick art which is more 70's craft projects. The red shoe chair is iconic.
Guys if you want a good bucket go to your local pool and ask if they have any HTH buckets we literally have so many and would happily give them away!! Not every pool has them depends on the type of chlorine they use but free big strong bucket!!!
as a person who was a teen and young adult in the 70's I can tell you that "tramp art" was art done is school for projects in learning to work together - or an "at home" craft when you were bored...coz there was no internet or even decent Tv channels that ran 24/7....but it certainly wasn't something you displayed in your own home - you gave it to grandma as a present.....LOL
In an era of over saturated influencer podcasts this new show format is honestly so fun and refreshing ! I love it

That glass tile has Becky’s 70’s vibe for sure. I couldn’t pull it off but she could make it fabulous!

As a lifelong Maker myself, and originally wanting to do Architecture as a Major + Double Minor in Interior and Landscape Design in College, but never making it there for a number of reasons...seeing your various redesigns, crafting, thrifting, and fun personalities as a Team come together is just delightful! 🥰❤️🔥🫂🙏 Thanks for being one of my big influences for wanting to become a Creator myself, and just put my silly eccentric 6'4" self out there having fun with Art and Making cool stuff for myself and others. ❤️🫂🤞🙏🍀 Been filming since last year to get better and have a plethora of stuff to drop out the gate! 😁🤞🙏
I'm getting ready to kick off things soon with a $5k Bargain 1968 Marlette Single Wide Trailer remodel and 1 acre Green Homestead conversion here in Michigan! As well as offshoot Channels as part of a Network to niche down on other interests of mine that I figured Content worthy with my own spin on them...like Rockhounding and Prospecting, Ghost Hunting and Paranormal Research, Gaming (MtG, Chess, Board, Trivia, Poker, Video, D&D, etc....), Zombie Apocalypse/Survival Prepping, Cooking and Drink making, Independant News, Reviews, etc etc ...
It's definitely been a daunting new set of skills to learn! How to fly a drone and capture beautiful shots that way, operating and editing Insta360 footage when you can see everywhere simultaneously, strapping a GoPro to my head to get POV footage making Resin pieces or Driving my 1977 Dodge B200 Van around that is going to be my branded Business Vehicle and Mobile Advertising platform. Also one day a potential Vanlife build for traveling, though I already have a 1964 Avion Camper to redo and a 1958 Ford School Bus that might make better retro platforms for it. But I also just thought about turning them into Glamper AirBnB units to generate both Content, and passive income to further expand and grow the Business! 🤷😁🥷😎🤞🙏🍀 Time shall tell!
So, thanks for being truly awesome, lovely people, who all share a passion for showing others how to better their lives and live happier! ❤️🫂🙏🤘👏🎉🍀 May 2024 be another blessed amazing year for your growth and prosperity!!
PS, You should absolutely scoop up that Cube Van, or something similar as a Glamper conversion yourselves! It would be awesome to see the Team try to come together on what design aesthetic to use, and how the overall execution of it would unfold! 😍🥰❤️🔥🤞🙏🤘🍀🤷
anne is the cutest and her accent? 😍😍
buy the vane camper , we wanna see it transformed
I just finished watching your vid and then started watching Lone Fox…low & behold he has a light wood tramp art lamp!! Minus the fringe. lol
I’d love to include a pic, but don’t think I can.. 🤷🏻♀️
My brothers bought me one of those potato serving dishes for Christmas. I love it
luckkyyyyy
I love this! I actually was doing a mini series on my private Instagram stories sharing all the weird stuff I find on marketplace. I made a logo for it on Canva and everything lol. It is surprising how many coffin themed items I kept finding in my local area 😅😅
oh no. Eyes out for coffin content now
GET ROCHIE A PORTABLE WORKSHOP STAT !! 😂
I have that same vintage potato! I only have the larger one and I use it to hold all my cats stuff...hes and orange boy named Potato 💛
Omg yes to the dimensions question! They always say “yes it’s available” and then “are you interested” and I have to say “I am if it’s the right size. Can you provide the dimensions?!”
Oh y’all better be buying that cube truck and starting a series!!!
12:45 Rochelle asking questions to make them not guess it was her purchase. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
she’s too smart
@@TheSorryGirls not smart enough because only fooled one. But great acting!
love a good danny cameo 🧡
My kitchen backsplash is the same glass tile as becky's current backsplash and I can't stand it! So busy. I'm almost tempted to paint over it until we can retile....
let us know how it goes 👀 I’ve definitely painted over tile until I could redo my kitchen!
Becky must have not gotten the memo its bare your shoulders dress day. Hello Ann ...love you all .
Loved this episode.
No wild cards today! loving this series though 😊
Those potato 🥔 casserole dishes were made by the same moms who made the vintage ceramic Christmas trees 🎄
Drew on Lone Fox has the wood Lamp!! On his latest episode
Lone fox has a few popsicle/tramp art pieces. They are so cool.
Those creepy cat scratch post, are quite an understandable title correctly. It looked like someone wanted to kidnapped those dolls!
as a person who was a teen and young adult in the 70's I can tell you that "tramp art" was art done is school for projects in learning to work together - or an "at home" craft when you were bored...coz there was no internet or even decent Tv channels that ran 24/7....but it certainly wasn't something you displayed in your own home - you gave it to grandma as a present.....LOL
I have always loved tram art
the potato dish is so good!! i would serve mash potato in it! or like a butter dish!
It’d be perfffffecttt
