Cut the chair, Keep the bathroom. Put the toilet (Laveo dry flush toilet) on lockable pull out drawer slides that will slide and lock into extended into position inside the bathroom when needed and when not needed have it slide back under couch for full shower use and functionality.

Keep the bathroom. Plus the added wall will give additional privacy (& separation) to your bedroom.

Hi Megan, I am lets say a mature age women and its taken me a long time to learn this. You (and Jack) are on your own journey and its a huge trap to look to others to compare yourself against. All you can do is travel your own path with grace and respect for others. How they choose to react is there choice and says nothing about who you are. From my observation you are a warm and caring person so keep just being authentic and true to yourself. Have been enjoying your caravan build and am constantly amazed how you both learn and just have a go! Looking forward to seeing how Myrtle comes together.

As an architect, I would definitely give yourself that extra space for the bathroom. The extra seating space is always nice, but I personally compromise on it to create the amenity you need in the bathroom.
Once you start using the caravan daily, you definitely won’t regret the comfort the larger bathroom will provide. There will always be room outside for sitting/eating, but there isn’t always somewhere to use the bathroom! Hope that helps you make the decision.

Megan, you are a wonderful kind caring girl.. don't compare yourself to the others..you are so much better and you and Jack keep it real. As for the bathroom, I started out without one, ended up getting a porta loo for those cold nights where we didn't want to go outside to the caravan park toilets..it worked well. If you can do it so that you have an outside shower, maybe that will work.. it's your caravan. Do what makes you happy. keep smiling xx

Don't compare yourself to others, a lot of other channels you only see the happy stuff.
Life is like a heart beat, you need the ups and downs, a flat line is no good at all.
Keep doing what you're doing, it's great stuff.

While watching this, I kept saying keep the bathroom. It's good that you did the pros and cons exercise to help make the decision to choose open space over the bathroom. We managed many years in tent, campers and first van without bathroom and survived. Now in our very mature years the bathroom is a must! You are far away from that need! Meagan, I know how to beat yourself up comparing yourself to others, like you. I guess the important thing is to keep affirming your own self worth. Stay true to yourself. You and Jack are a wonderful support to each other. Myrtleis looking fantastic. 😊

I absolutely agree with your decision. As soon as I saw your layout plan I felt that it may have been a tight squeeze to put the bathroom in. Of course, I also had faith that you'd get it done. I think that your decision is the best way to go. It does look really good like that.
As for what you shared Meghan, nobody has a perfect life all the time, no matter what they make it appear on socials. Stumbling sometimes is natural. Feeling drained or overwhelmed is natural. These are the moments when you can take time to rest and reflect.

  • @StephenandSusan6557

Well done on making the decision on a bathroom. You can always have a toilet inside, but I agree about the outside shower as there are lots of times when we are travelling that we use the bathroom for washes only because we are conserving water. And as Jack says, it will save money and a huge learning journey, when you already have so many, many on the build. I like having a bathroom in our camper, but I think I would make the same decision as you if I were your age. It’s so lovely to see the progress you’ve made so far.

Hi Jack and Megan, you both have done a wonderful job on Myrtle. A quick suggestion for that blank area between your fridge and kitchen, you can put in a pull out pantry.
Wow!!! You’ll be able to stay off grid for so long with those solar panels, wonderful. Then just a good outdoor toilet tent with a compost toilet and you can go anywhere. I bet you can’t wait. Love your channel so much. Take care

  • @schoey4x4
    @schoey4x4 6 місяців тому +5

Hey guys just remember you said that you started the channel so that your family could follow you AUS trip. You have grown into the creators that you are today. It’s ok if you don’t post every week, you are leaning to build something you have never done and that takes time, which means you will need extra time to both learn and then edit videos. When I built my four wheel drive from the ground up there was frustrations, mistakes, over budget costs… and that was without creating and editing videos. You guys are doing an amazing job and the caravan is coming along beautifully. Just remember the beauty of building something from the ground up is that once you start traveling with it, if you aren’t happy with a feature of the build you can modify and change it.
Keep your chins up you are doing awesome. The build is up there with the quality builds that you get from buying a caravan. I look forward to the next video when you guys post it up. Good luck with the remainder of the build, you will be on the road soon enough. 😊

  • @davewain363
    @davewain363 6 місяців тому +1

CUT IT! You will be glad to have a bathroom and you will never have 'space' in a caravan. And you will each have your seating position and not use all of the couch.
Love your raw and honest vlogs - "we don't know what we're doing".
My wife and I renovated a pop top a few years ago and we went through all the same emotions - although we kept our kitchen and just painted cupboards, no bathroom (too small).
Removed the couch and added 2 very comfy boat seats, removed the single beds down each side and built a queen lift up bed. Added 12v, new hitch, lights, audio, window tint....
Don't give up. Don't give up. Don't give up....
Edit: I typed this comment with the video paused. When I restarted the video, guess where it was up to. 😂😂 Stop commenting! We don't need your comments. 😆😆

Hey guys, Far from a failure, A list is a guide not a rulebook. I think your smashing it!
Good idea with the bathroom in the end as how good is an outdoor shower!
And you can always carry a portaloo or composting loo under the seat as Jack said.
And if worse comes to worse out on the road and you really want the bathroom, maybe the wardrobe could be swapped to the other side...?
Cupboards and drawers look great! Maybe a magnet on the back of the drawers (onto the front wall) to keep them closed?

Loved this video, so relatable!! When I did my first van build, I quickly learnt that drawers would be the bane of my existence. Second time I made them, they were better, but still took me hour and hours to get right. I love building vans and fitouts, but I would happily never have to install a drawer again! Hahah. They look great though, keep smashing it!!

Before cutting your couch, use some cardboard to create a template, that will help. If you’re worried about the bathroom wall, cut the wall and just put it in place to see what it will look like. Or put the toilet in, hide it, run the shower outside and use a pop-up shower. Good luck!

Another great video guys, in your inimitable honest and open style - stay true to yourselves. On the bathroom - keep it - you have got this - remember the cost/hardwork is quickly forgotten however the pain, inconvenience, hassle etc etc of not having a bathroom will be with you for as long as you dont have a bathroom. In my humble opinion the bench is too long - you wont miss the 90 or so cm that you will cut off

I’ve got a coaster bus with soft close drawers and it is an absolute barstard to keep them closed. Every F’n corner they slide open.
I’ve tried so far: draw catches with a RV lab ~ epic failure
    Then I’ve tried strong magnets
Then I’ve tried child safety locks
Currently I have things wedged up against them while I travel and have asked for a solution on the Toyota coaster group on FB. EVIDENTLY I’m not alone.

Now the bathroom...because you have a space there already behind the couch I would do a hidden bathroom in a box. You wouldn't see it as its lower than the couch. A curtain folds out and attaches to the roof with hooks then folds down when your finished. Of course the box needs to be waterproof but it might be worth thinking about ? Heaps online to have a look at.

Put a toilet inside and an ensuite awning off the kitchen so you can just pop the hose out the window and have a shower in the ensuite. Toilet would be low and keep it open plan.

@@itsJackandMegan it makes the space and is a perfect nod to its history.
I just added to my original comment with bathroom idea where you can have open space and bathroom.

Good decision. Will you be having some hot & cold outdoor taps? Could make the outdoor shower nicer. Have you thought about the awning yet?

How many people do you plan to have in your van at any one time? If mostly just the two of you, do you really need that long a lounge seat? If it was me, I'd keep the bathroom. This also gives you more privacy to your bedroom. Plus if you plan to sell her in the future, a caravan with a bathroom will be more desirable. But as you've said, you know what you like.

Hey Megan and Jack, I know that Ive said it before as a comment on your channel but you two are an amazingly inventive, creative and upbeat couple and its good to see on your vlogs the challenges as well as the successes. So thankyou to you both for being one step ahead of the rest! And theres been so many people who have started renovating an old caravan like yours but have stopped at different stages because it was really challenging, but youre still going so a huge congrats to you for still being there with the reno and when your videos come out is when it happens and its ok that it takes more than a week for each video to hit you tube! Love it whenever they happen as we love your vibe, your questions, your doubts and your resolutions! Youre doing so well! Thx phil

I'm with you Megan, best to be real & be true to yourself. Keeping a toilet inside during the night could prevent unwanted creature encounters outside ( spiders snakes etc. ). A portable unit eg tethford 565, could be used inside during the night & then taken outside during the day. loved the video , the project has come a long way, well done guys. Keep the sunny side up.

I have seen a fold out kickass shower fixed to the outside if an older van. Put a Porta potty in there when not showering & a portable hot water unit. Something you can add later as money allows. Love the retro orange on the seat hope you go with something bold when you reupholster.

Gday. Fantastic work guys and definitely the best decision to drop that bathroom in the small space you have. Showering outdoors is heaps better than in a cramped van shower. As far as the thunderbox goes well nature's own exhaust fan outside is much better than stinking out the van.
Suss out those composting dunnies. They to me and my wife appears better than the chemical ones. Easier to clean I'm told I'm sure there will be someone on here that will either confirm how good the cleaning of them are.
Keep up the good work and the FTE was the best decision ever. 👍
Never worry about the could've done better at school stuff mate. I was expelled in year 11 and now I'm a teacher! Teaching woodwork, metalwork and automotive not English thankfully.
Our achievements in life are a testament to what our capabilities and passions are not what we scored in a test in class and you are both excelling in this career you've chosen.
    Keep up the good work

I think you should still cut it down to crest space near the bed but go with the toilet under the chair. And pop a shower awning outside with a set up for a hot shower

First time commenter, from one caravaner to another - keep the bathroom! There won't be that much that will be taken off the chair & it will still look great & be plenty big enough :)

You could have half wall for bathroom with a bench that folds , use a shower curtain around the top when needed. You won't use a shower everyday but a toilet you will and won't want to move the toilet in and out constantly from under a bench.

I installed the Tetravan fold down shower in my latest van build. It's probably the worst shower you'll ever take but it's a hot shower in the van that takes up next to no space, so that's a winner for me. It's expensive, so that's a major con but I love it and anyone that I've shown the van to thinks the fold-down shower is amazing.

Good choice getting rid of the bathroom. It would have been tiny in the smaller van. Have somewhere for the toilet inside for the missus at night. And then attach one of those joolca double shower tents to the outside super quick to setup or even the free standing one I have is great cause it can be zipped up in the cooler months to keep the heat in while showering outside.
