Grand tour of the deer blind, how I set it up on the elevator brackets and moved it, DeerView Windows and my honest review, some DIY shelves I built, my take on the layout and size, and some quick tips on what to do when building your own DIY deer blind/tower.

I'm a newbie to deer hunting, but trained on stealth. Suggestion I would make....paint the interior black, then wear all black when hunting in it. You will become a shadow and deer will not see you, even if you move. Also go get some gym mats (puzzle pieces) or some foam matting, will reduce noise on the floor...if you really wanted to, you could do the whole interior in them and it would virtually deaden all noise.
Yup, put old carpet on all the walls and two layers of carpet on floor. You can literally get up and walk around with deer right outside.

Sweet blind! We built one a few years ago 6x6 octagon. Copied the plans from a you tube video came out sweet also used the deer view windows from Texas. Can’t say enough good things about those windows.

Very nice blind. We have two like that, I put a trap door in the floor using 4x4's and 2x4s for rungs. I also used earth anchors and cable to cinch it down. Watch you window sills for water getting inside your wall. It looks like its open to the elements because your window is on the inside.

Nice work. I use the Deerview windows as well and have them in 3 blinds now. I also added a Final Rest Fixed Blind kit with extra mounts so that I can move it from window to window and blind to blind. I highly recommend it.

Very Nice Set up and build. Been looking around and trying to decide on what I wanted for a blind and this may be it. Love the Windows. Now To just get my butt in gear and get it done. May wait on lumber prices though. Thanks for sharing this build.

Excelling job! I'd raise the shelf so it sits level with the window sill or very close. This way you will not need a large bag to get the rifle above the sill.

Saw a few videos on weather proofing windows.. Use garage door trim up against outside of window. Use brown painted flashing and caulk any seams..You don’t want snow setting on your sill.will rot wall over time..
The steps on the blind I made got real slippery when they got wet and mildew on them. I put some old shingles I had on my steps. Now no more slipping.

We use 5x8. We carpet the floor and all openings that we will shoot from. Usually, 2 office chairs in the blind. Carpet in the floor helps keep the noise down. We're in south GA so not as cold.
Nice build , I'm building a blind on a trailer hopefully, my material is salvaged insulated garage door panels , will build this year.

I noticed you left a screw/lag bolt sticking out on the right front looking at the blind. Really nice blind, well made.
Great deer box blind
I’ve used stall mats inside on the floor with office chairs that roll, its very quiet. The other thing to think about is putting up some curtains to help eliminate silhouetting and it keeps the blind dark inside after you paint the interior walls.
Stall mats is a good idea, I think Tractor Supply has those in stock here.
Yes and mice don’t eat those.
I built a 5x8 and only for one person. I have the same windows mostly. I did not insulate mine because heater is more than enough. One thing I did with this instead of my propane heater is a small wood burning tent stove. This lessens the moisture that will build up on the inside with your breath and the propane heater produces moisture. I have not tested the stove in really cold weather yet because built in summer but tried it in 40's and once it gets burning really produces a lot of heat. I am sure it will be more than enough. If you want to see a picture of my stove setup let me know. I really like it. This is a ground blind but I have an elevated blind with stairs like yous with a rail and platform at top outside door.
Wood burning stove is legit, you'll be out there in a T-shirt and shorts to stay cool 😎

Nice, the only thing I could see is to paint the interior a dark color. The deer could see you in the house with the natural wood color.. also the windows in the inside, moisture gets in that wall you can stop the rot. I suggest putting a shutter on the outside you can close to protect from moisture.

I put an overhang over the window so if it is raining it helps keep the rain off the window. Having that just over the window also shades it a bit so blocks the deers view inside.

Nice blind. Get those 2x4 painted and get some shrubs/briars around the base.
I also never hunt the actual food plots. Good way to get your deer noctural. Too much chance spooking deer off the plot when your coming or going.
Place that between beeding and the food
Use an office chair. They will adjust up and down with a adjustable shock. I have one in mine and it is awesome.

Very cool build , I plan on building a 5 x 6 this spring and will be using several of your ideas. Thanks for the tips. Can you tell me how far u are off the ground and how long your 4 x4's are to get that height you have. I plan on not being too high as I want good deer presentations for x bow.
The blind ends up being a little bit over 6ft off the ground. I cut the 4x4s at 76" to make up for the offset they would be at sitting in the brackets. With sitting in the chair and looking out the window, just over 9ft from the ground.

Really been leaning towards the 6x8 as well so your build just reinforced my thoughts. Looks great and like those windows as well. Just ordered some of those brackets for the base, any idea what the weight rating might be? I know it’s probably a little different depending on manufacturers but just curious. Thanks
Great to hear! The weight rating can vary but I've seen several in the 12-13 gauge steel range that support 1000lbs per bracket, so plenty of support!

Maybe tint the windows dark like 25% - 40% or put blackout curtains up it will keep the inside dark so the deer does not see a

Nice. You cut notches in you 2x4 shelf to rest firearms or holes for coffee cub or a tripod swivel.
I haven't but I like the idea! Gotta have a place for coffee.
Awesome job bud can I make one suggestion I know you're going to put in a handrail but I would consider screwing down traction treads treated lumber gets awful slippery going in and out of a blind I had to fall almost twice getting in and out of mine to realize I needed safety treads specially with ice or rain Wolmanized wood gets really wet and slippery

I modified a plan from "MyOutdoorPlans 6x8 Deer Blind". If you Google that you will go to his site and it lays out everything for ya..wood, cuts, angles. Just depends on what you want yours to look like. Have a good one!
How did you do on opener? It was a bit warm but i managed to get three before 1pm on rifle season near Kalkaska. Completely slowed down after that because it was so warm.
Great to hear! Got a buck during archery, then got a nice 10pt a few days into firearm season after the heat went away.

Hey thanks for watching! Did 3/4 I believe for floor and just 1/2 plywood on exterior walls. Interior walls were more cosmetic and to lock in insulation so did real thin 1/8 OSB for that.
Nice box but how is your access? When leaving the blind at night are you spooking everything in the food plot? Maybe want to put a trail directly in the woods behind and plant switch grass for a cover wall to escape.
Trail right behind it that is off camera, so tons of access. If anything I feel like deer here in my woods don't even care, they'll stare at me on the tractor...gotta keep em guessing 😀
And to think, back in the day, I would sit on a folding stool in the bushes in the cold wind. 😂

What material did you use for the outside…also what type of paint. Thank you.
Decided on using 1/2in plywood for the walls, standard metal roof panels, and tons of studs for support on walls/ceiling to keep everything strong.
Paint is Exterior Valspar Duramax (Lowe's). Really impressed with the stuff.

Here in S. Texas, trying to insulate the floor by covering the bottom creates an excellent bee hive for african killer bees. Trust me. First hand knowledge that could have ended in death.

I didn't keep a running list but I would say with everything I did...somewhere around $1500.

What size are the windows? I'm trying to get an idea for my own build. Do you like the size of the windows, anything you'd do differently with them?
Front one is 60x12 Horizontal slider. The sides were 30x12 hinge windows

Good move! Painted mine black inside last year...looks good and keeps those Deer from busting me! Mine looks very similar to yours, a tad smaller though... I like yours better for size!
Get some paint on that bottom half and the ends of the outside walls moisture will ruin all that quickly.

Can you give me more info on the flip up windows?
For sure! Made by DeerView, and they have multiple sizes you can choose from for your blind/cabin/etc. The flip up's are the Hinge Window (DV) on their site.

How much did it cost you for all the wood supplies and material?
When it was all said and done I want to say $1500. Some parts are cheaper now so maybe doable for around $1200 if you're in a pinch.
Haven’t seen it in the comments but a propane heater creates moisture which can/will freeze that slider window.
This thing is so insulated just a crack of the window should make it easy mode
You can use silicone spray. I use it on everything that can freeze up here in Minnesota.
Should of had the shelf level with the bottom of the window to help with steading your rifle or crossbow!
I thought about it when building it, but decided on it being a tad lower so I can adjust height/position with a sandbag or mount that others have recommended. We will see!
Not sure if my one comment was blocked by youtube. Use self-adhering foam egg crate material to absorb your conversation sounds and the gunfire ringing coming from within the blind.

If I remember right I think it was $1200-$1500 for the build. Really just depends on lumber prices, luckily that has held steady, compared to 2021 prices which were a joke.

They can be any dimension you want. The hinge ones (sides) we're mounted on the inside while the front slider one was mounted on the outside
Paint or darken the interior walls. Otherwise your outline will show up against the light background. Safe hunting my friend!

Yep ended up painting it black and posting an update video on it with the clover plots, having the inside black looks so much better.
How tall are your walls?
Since it's a lean-to style one did like 6'8" in front down to 6'4" in the back by the door if I remember right, plenty of room to move around without crouching. What are you thinking for yours?
I’m in a home made father in law made out of. Cedar trees with a. Tin room on it no windows only a old door that won’t shut now and a computer chair to sit in might have to bundle up with two pair pants and shirts and jacket but I do what I got to do .
Sounds like it has served it's purpose in harvesting some deer, so I would say it's a win!
whats your interior wall height?
Just checked and the finished height for inside is 7ft on the front side and slopes down to 6ft 6in for the back part. The rough in lumber dimensions would be taller. But plenty of room to stand up and move around, I'm 6ft and it's great. You building yours for this year?

I wear all black and deer do not see me. I have had deer within 10 feet with out them seeing me

8x8 is so much better, cheap …, Conforms to simple siding, roof ,.and floor sizes for lumber and makes it a mini cabin
Still , pretty comfortable for a novice
2x6 joists 16" on center for the floor and 3/4 plywood flooring to lock it all down. Man 8x8 would've been a bear to move with the skid steer but ur right on it being a mini cabin at that point. It's solid that's for sure.
@@hurstyoutdoors 8x8 is downright luxurious. We built one in my Father-in-law's pole barn. Took the sub-assemblies (walls, floor section, etc.) out to the site using a trailer and John Deere then assembled it in place. Lots of room to stretch out in it. Also gets warm with a Mr Buddy heater going. Several times I've taken a nap in there.
