Even though this fish is from Lake Malawi and the water parameters are different, what are your thoughts about keeping a small school of Blue Dolphin fish, Cyrtocara moori with a colony of Frontosa?

Hi Richelle, I just bought a 600 gallon tank. It measures 8 feet long 4 feet deep and 36 inches wide. It will be filtered with 4 FX6 canisters. My question is how many fronts will work in this tank. Male and female ratio and total number of fish. Thanks
I have a 125 with a colony of 7: three males and four females. The dominant male has two males to pick on so neither gets that much attention. The females are also a good distraction. In a 600 gallon tank with those ratios, I would stay with the 3 males but add 3-4 more females. I will say, if you have caves, they will hide and it will still look like you have just 3-4 fish. Try to buy your frontosas at different places as a way to increase your genetic diversity; otherwise, your fish might all come from one spawn and pass genetic issues to their fry.

My story doesn’t end well unfortunately these horrible things happen. Never again but it happened with my gorgeous frontosa colony. I had these fish guys for many years and grew attached like I do to all my fish. I just put a new heater in my tank ( eheim jager) a week prior and all seemed good and when I went to work all was good according to my digital thermometer.. when I get home first thing I do When I walk in is check on my tanks. When I looked at my frontosa colonies tank I saw The digital thermometer say 101°F the heater stuck on in the boil my fish. I had one survivor he was 12 inches long beautiful male!!!! I was in shock and so sad then came anger because I bought this heater thinking they were great quality turns out I found out they all fail anyway. As of now all my aquariums including my reef has the heater that comes with the thermostat controller. This happened many years ago but it was a lesson and hard learned and the cost the life of my beautiful fish. I’ve had these heater stick and heard of friends who’ve had this heater stick and kill all the fish mini mini times since that happened to me so beware. Well I’m sorry my story was so down but to tell you I had many beautiful years with those fish watching them grow and watching how they exist watching how they set the pecking order who is the dominant male so on and so forth.
