Carly Pearce gave one of the most powerful performance of the night at the Country Music Hall of Fame's Medallion Ceremony on Sunday (May 1), where she sang in tribute to new inductees the Judds.
The Judds were one of a class of inductees - also including the late Ray Charles, and recording musicians Eddie Bayer and Pete Drake - and in the hours leading up to the ceremony, tragedy struck the legendary duo when Naomi Judd unexpectedly died on Saturday, just one day earlier.
At the request of the Judd family, the Hall of Fame moved forward with its plans to celebrate its new class of inductees, and Naomi's daughter and duo member Wynonna Judd attended the event and gave an emotional speech. Naomi's death cast a long shadow over the evening's performances, too: Pearce delivered a somber and reverent rendition of "Grandpa (Tell Me 'Bout the Good Old Days)," a hit song for the Judds from 1986.
After the ceremony, Pearce reflected on her experience of performing during such a powerful moment, and spoke to the Judds' lasting impact.

Naomi and I would sit at Vanderbilt hospital and have coffee or tea while we waited for our lab work to come back. We talked about our kids and just life in general she was a hoot. Then I moved to Texas and lost touch but will always remember how much she loved her family. Will always love and miss you R.I.P My friend. Renée McGee, Daisetta Texas.

My three adult children decided they wanted to play the Judds song “Grandpa” at their grandpa (my dads) funeral. I sobbed through the whole song. I could not gather my composure. It is a song that touched all of our hearts. I still cry to this day, 12 years later, when I hear that song or think about my dad. Naomi, we are very sad you’re gone from us, but oh what a time you are having in Heaven. I love these words in one of my favorite songs. Your pain and your suffering forgotten, and your tears will be turned into joy, How beautiful Heaven must be. I’m putting all of my faith into that verse. Wynonna and Ashley, I pray for your peace in this difficult time.

I did not grow up in a home where country music was listened to. I didn't used to like it. But one day, right after getting married, I found myself living in East Tennessee, and right around that time, I discovered The Judds. They, and Garth Brooks, were hugely popular then. My heart was forever changed. I was drawn to their music, and have loved them ever since. God bless Wynonna and Ashley, and their families. My heart is deeply saddened for them as they begin life without their precious mother. I understand this loss, as my own mother has been gone just over 4 years. This great sorrow, though, draws our attention to Eternity. The world holds less and less of our attention, and the Lord holds more and more.

My daughter started out singing country music and the Judds was definitely in her list of songs with Reba, Patsy, Dolly and Brenda Lee. What a group of ladies to set your sights on to model after. She now does Gispel and I believe all of you had a part in that transition but all the glory and praise goes to Jesus Christ. Thank you for sharing your mother with all of us for many years. I grew up listening to the Judd's. My favorite songs are guardian angels love can build a bridge. And grandpa tell me about the good old days. But the very first song of the Judd's that I actually heard was have mercy in the early 80's. I do also like that song that Winona did for that touch by an Angel episode with peatty in it you know the one that the kid had cystic fibrosis.

Oh, the Judds. A complicated, beautiful, gut-wrenching duo that I have loved for years! They were the first concert I ventured to on my own and I loved every second of it! Wynonna and Ashley - I know that you know your mamma is in a better place, free from pain and watching over her babies. May the Lord shine his light of love and peace over both of you as you move through this period of mourning.

    Dear Ashley & Wynona,
I am a Singaporean. So there ain't no country music where I come from, but even as far away and as a little tiny dot that we are from Nashville, America, and the world of country music, I discovered country music singers from watching movies n sitcoms. I discovered this wonderful fantastic world of country music singers when Dolly Parton was in 9 to 5 (my absolute favourite movie....still), Reba Mcentire from the sitcom Reba (my absolute favourite comedy...still) and one of my favourite actresses, Ashley Judd, who through her, I discovered, The Judd's, of coz there was no doubt Ashley would be successful in her career, she had awe-inspiring strong women to model from.
So I discovered country music very late in life, I remembered when Carrie Underwood won Idol n then wanted to focus on country music, I was like WHY?? Until much later I discovered American country music is HUUUUUUGE in America.
But even as a little girl, I would catch a glimpse of Naomi on some award shows, and I always thought she was beautiful, didn't understand her kind of music tho, but she caught my eye, I sensed that she had strong underlying quiet strength that I can see through her performances. So when I found out today that she had passed on, I was in absolute total shock. N I never realized how severe her depression was.
You see, I was diagnosed with a mild form of depression and suffered from anxiety attacks a few years back. Just being diagnosed and accepting that depression is an illness took me a few years. In fact, I spiralled deeper into depression coz I could not cope with this diagnosis. See in my country, as with most countries, mental health unfortunately isn't recognized even by our Ministry of Health. (None of Psychiatric medicines is subsidised by our government), our society, our culture. You are sick when you have fever, coz the doctor can physically feel your hot body temperature but with mental health, it's more or less hearsay, what do I tell my boss, I can't get up to go to work today coz I don't feel mentally right? And what do I tell my doctor to get my MC that I don't feel mentally well today, so that can I get a day off work???
Because the government does not formally recognise mental illness, this is reflected on the nation, so my family as with the rest of the nation doesn't understand n don't want to understand my mental health issues. So I'm classified as crazy, a loose screw, lazy, unreliable, you get the gist of this. And on top of my mental health issues, I suffer from chronic pain, which is basically DOUBLE JEOPARDY for me, yet, another disease, that can't be detected via science, so another hearsay. N yet both sickness have a symbiotic relationship, having one triggers the other. And yet what I'm suffering from is both not a serious form of each disease. My doctor tells me, comfortingly I might add, "You will be in pain for the rest of your life both mentally and physically, if You learn to manage it and surround yourself with supportive people,, You will not die from this disease. You will die from something else." How ironic and quite comical really. My family labels it as disease of the mind, how right they are, but they understand it in from another context, that I'm a negative person and weak, as I'm unable to lift my spirits up normally like normal people .
BTW, I'm grateful for the presence of COVID, coz thru this virus, people are accepting the term clinical depression and anxiety. But still not enough for not only my government, but other countries as well to accept mental health problems are out there, just like having a stroke or a heart attack, but of the mind.
Today I do not mourn for Naomi Judd's death, the well known and well respected international singer. I mourn for the exceptionally strong person that Naomi Judd was, I believe that she was strong, right to the end, n so the Judd family is right to state that they have lost their matriarch from a mental illness disease. You can see how the world is questioning this statement, and from the general consensus their reply is HIGHLY IGNORANT, EXTREMELY OBTUSE, TOTALLY NARCISSISTIC AND SADISTIC AND STILL EXTREMELY UNAWARE OF HOW BAD MENTAL ILLNESS CAN BE., ,To the world and those of U trying to put a common label on Miss Naomi 's death, SHAME ON YOU. I don't suffer as much as she did, not even a teaspoon full of what she was going through, n yet I feel my world is always falling apart. I can only imagine what she is going through. And it scares me,. But at the same time it gives me strength to better manage my sickness.
So WORLD, kindly please have some empathy n understanding for the Judd sisters, it's from recognition and acceptance of the existence of this type of disease by individuals that can move governments to change their laws and recognise that mental illness is a silent and deadly killer. Just like opioid and drug addiction, guns, this illness can harm and kill you too.
We love you Ashley, Wynona and Larry. We are sorry for your tremendous and painful loss. And we celebrate your lovely mother's miraculously successful life and achievements.. BOTH PERSONALLY & PROFESSIONALLY.
Warmest regards from someone who understands.
