I think Bucks Fizz and their performance were one of the weaker ones that night. The 2nd 3rd and 4th placed entries all sounded like potential winners and were far more deserving of the title.

The Austrian jury hadn't read the memo about the new procedure vis à vis the announcement of votes; I.e. ascending order not performance order like it was up to and including 1979. Of course, they did it right in 1980 so I wonder what happened ?

I constantly think Bucks Fizz did more damage to the Contest's reputation in the UK than Terry Wogan ever did....I know that's a weird thing to say out the blue...but I think Wogan gets unfair criticism for putting the show down. Still to this day, Bucks Fizz are often on media talking about the ESC...and they constantly bang on about it being kitsch and camp and having to go with a gimmic. It's exactly that attitude that's lead to the UK having such a terrible run in the modern era...so to see from this that actually, Bucks Fizz didn't win all that convincingly was quite a surprise...you'd think they'd pull off a Nicole style landslide!

There is a similar ethos in Ireland when it comes to selecting our entry; nothing contemporary or innovative (except maybe Ryan OShaughnessy). However the fact that RTE have total control about what song goes forward and are petrified about the expense of hosting it doesn't help matters either.

It just goes to show that a perfect performance is not necessary to win as long as you put the verve and enthusiasm in. I think I read that the show's director's got the mike levels all wrong for the UK entry.
This must have been nail biting to watch - it's insane how often the leading country changes! I wonder if that's some sort of record? It would be nice to have a bit of tension and drama in the 2024 voting as 2022 and 2023 were both practically a foregone conclusion (though to be fair, Finland put up a strong challenge to Sweden in 2023).

I think this was a strong year. Germany, Israel, Denmark, France, Spain, Netherlands, Ireland, Portugal, Belgium and Cyprus all had listenable and not embarrassing songs.

It's not that confusing, first the jury points are given, then the public points are given but collected up. It's still 12, 10, 8, 7....from the public but they give the total amount.

Fun fact! While Greece gave its 12 points to Cyprus, Cyprus gave them only 6!!! The following year they met in 1983 ( cause Greece abstained in 82) Cyprus made up for their mistake and gave Greece 12 points , but Greece remembered the atrocity of two years ago and gave Cyprus a big fat zero in retaliation 😂 The rest is history 😅
UK were favourites to win (in the UK at least) at 4-1. I think Ireland were next. In 82 the UK were way ahead as favourites at 5-2. I think Germany were only about 8-1

Bucks Fizz we’re awful vocally and the song mediocre, Switzerland were absolutely robbed! Five juries gave them douze points but so many gave them low marks or nothing.
But it was a very sparkling performance. They really went for it. They looked sure of themselves.
It was not a mediocre song. Number one all over Europe! Hardly mediocre according to Europe!!

Oh this one again! It's the Spanish Transitional flag according to Wiki, in use until December 1981. I made a big mistake using it, and I won't again!

Never used in 1981.
@@tiboryazh37 You're wrong. The eagle was just minorly retouched in 1977, but it was kept on the flag for most of the first democratic legislature. It wasn't removed from the Spanish flag up until October 28, 1981, when it was replaced by nowadays shield.
