  • Annie and Grinnell have been Cal's beloved peregrine falcons since they first alighted on the Campanile in 2017. Despite enjoying a relatively smooth first several years, the past six months have been full of ups and downs.

I heard about Annie and Grinnell when Grinnell got hurt, in a fight, I guess. I didn't worry when Annie "disappeared," but I wasn't that involved, either; I was focused on the ospreys in Richmond, and some of their chatters are real bird-brains and follow several nests; that's where I read the news about Grinnell, both times.
Alden had been hanging around for a time, and neither Annie nor Grinnell showed signs of perturbation that he was around. The night Grinnell died, Alden could be heard talking to Annie, and the following night brought a meal to her, but she didn't leave the nest to take it. The next night, Alden brought a snack into the nest and she grabbed it and left the nest for a short time. Two eggs hatched -- one was Grinnell's, the other Alden's -- Annie won't let Alden feed the chicks.
Yesterday he brought them a moth and Annie was there in a flash, grabbing the moth in a fury. Alden defers to her, "bowing and scraping," and gets the hell out of the nest when Annie shows up. These wild birds exist to make families and to do their part to keep the earth's creatures in balance.
It was pretty wonderful to have Alden there for Annie, and Grinnell's mourners seemed to be smiling through their tears to watch him working so hard to help Annie out in her time of need.
I don't see how he makes that talon work with his hip all out of joint and unable to support his weight, but he just did a spectacular mid-air prey exchange with Annie one or two days ago, and seems to be able to compensate, although he appears smaller than Grinnell. He is talkative and fun to watch; quite the character. They call him "Mr. Chirpy"

See Cal Falcons for updates and live webcams. When Grinnell died, Annie had laid 2 of their eggs. Shortly after Grinnell's death, a new suiter came - he is distinctive in that he has a pronounced limp. -He and Annie are both un-banded. Annie laid one more egg with the "new guy", and they are both incubating the three eggs (hopefully due to hatch somewhere in the beginning of May). There is a naming contest going on now for "new guy".

RIP Grinnell. A new guy (Alden) has stepped up and is helping Annie raise 2 chicks. At least one of the chicks is Grinnell’s.
