I wish I'd seen your blood tail draw tutorial before we just BioPryn preg tested our 4 new heifers for the first time -- I watched other tutorials but yours was way better.

Well, I get it, I really do. I have a 20 year old jersey who hasn’t given me a calf in 2 years, yet she still wants the milking routine and even gives a cup or two each day. We play along and will keep her around, BECAUSE SHE HAS GIVEN ME 18 CALVES! The old girl earned every minute of the routine and treats we give her. But for an unproductive cow… then add the fact that herd building is about eliminating problems, not carrying those genetics forward. As far as the topic at hand, they are both such amazing breeds. Dexters are lacking on production volume though. But our genetics are beef focused. It could be the reason we can’t get the 2.5 gallons this tine of 9 drinks every day. Jersey cattle have a rep for being temperamental, but it’s all about the individual animal and if you’ve been able to handle them and build trust from early on in their lives. We've used Redmond Selenium 90 loose salt and a second cattle mineral that also has selenium, both available free choice, but they don't seem to take much interest in it. We refresh it but based on weight they should consume more. Even with this the Selenium results were low, so we ended up going with the Multimin to give them a boost. If you've got any successful selenium sources we'll take referrals!
Have you tried offering free choice buffet style minerals? We are switching to ABC as it’s easily obtainable through the farm we buy feed from. That way the cattle can choose which minerals they need instead of relying on the manufacture to balance minerals for all land across the entire United States…. For example, we are in a high selenium area, so I don’t expect them to eat a lot of the selenium, but we are low in iodine, so I o expect them to eat more of the iodine…. Since your cows tested deficient in some thins and elevated in others, I think it would work great to allow them to balance without needing to do the injections.
They've had minimal vaccination so it seems unlikely that is the primary issue when you compare to many large herds that have few issues but actually follow a vaccination schedule with lots of vaccinations.
All our dexters have successfully bred via AI (8 pregnancies). You just need a good tech. The jersey did not even breed with the bull we had here for 4 months. She will get one more chance to breed this summer with our neighbors larger bull.

Great video Yall! We just bought 4 acres. It’ll be a few years before we are ready for mini cattle but we have considered both breeds.
I need a cattle update- at least one calved judging by the pasture video- I saw a little belfair looking calf running around

@@cozycowfarm we offer free choice kelp. When we first put it out they went to town on it but now just seem to consume as needed.

I've always wondered with animals if vaccines could cause harm like fertility issues like in humans some vaccines have caused damage

If you watch older videos of "Just a few acres farm", he has a dexter herd and AI would not work.
He had to buy a bull and that did the trick!
